Tile levelling system: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

You are about to order a tile levelling system for a bathroom, kitchen, or patio, and the listing can look finished while the joint, the thickness, or the pliers are missing. This check covers mechanism, stated thickness, joint width, and whether the tool is in the box. It does not name a top kit. The ten amazon.co.uk listings, with GBP prices from 15 October 2026, sit in the [tile levelling system comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/tile-levelling-system). Products Compared read those listings and the public UK sources, with no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a tile levelling system has to include

A tile levelling system pulls neighbouring tiles into one plane while the adhesive is still soft. It will not correct a hollow bed. Clip and wedge, a spin cap, and a steel needle all make that pull, and the tool has to match the base. Wedges from one brand often do not seat in another brand's clips. A clip-and-wedge kit drives a single-use base with a reusable wedge, usually through pliers. A spin kit turns a matching cap by hand. A steel needle, tightened with a wrench, must come out before the adhesive locks it. That wait is on the how to use tile levelling clips page. A first floor is simpler with pliers in the box than with a pin you must pull the same afternoon. The joint on the packet is the grout line only if you use that clip as the spacer.

Joint width is not the same as tile thickness

The millimetre on the clip is the spacer, not the tile thickness. The Tile Association says a floor joint should not be less than 3 mm, citing BS 5385-3. BS 5385-3:2024, published on 31 May 2024, is a code of practice, not a criminal offence on a domestic job by itself. A 2 mm clip is narrower than that figure when separate spacers set the grout line. Vitrex's LASH sheet says the clips level and do not replace corner spacers. Most of this set is 2 mm. SHAFFER is stated at 4 mm, and EONHANCE's title says 3 mm and also 1/8 inch. Flintronic prints "1.5mm - 6m", which is not rewritten here as 6 mm. A blank thickness line means the listing does not state it. Fleetise states up to 14 mm, SHAFFER PRO 3–22 mm, and Flat-Pro 3–20 mm. EONHANCE, Fusion Bliss, and Bihui TSL50 leave thickness blank. Slabs over 16 mm are on the large-format porcelain page.

A complete kit, not a bag of clips

Pliers belong in a first clip-and-wedge kit. Wedges, caps, and needles are the reusable parts, and the clips are single-use. A bag that says wedges and pliers are not included is a refill, not a system. Clip-only bags at about £22.96 and £45.00 sat outside the ten listings. Rezolite, about £18.99, lists 500 bases, 100 wedges, pliers, and tiles of 3–16 mm. XMAO, about £19.99, says 400 clips, 100 wedges, and pliers in one bullet and clips ×300 on the components line, for tiles of 3–15 mm, with no UK review block. EONHANCE's title says 600 spacers and 200 wedges, while one opened-pack review describes 550 and 150. A short count against that description falls under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Which? summarises a 30-day right to reject.

How many pieces a room actually uses

Tradetiler's rule of thumb is about 11 clips per square metre on 600 × 600 mm tiles. BuildWiz's is about 17, plus a 10–15% buffer. On 24 m² that is 408 clips, then about 470 with 15%, which that guide rounds to a 500-clip pack. The two rates do not match, so lean higher where you have many cuts. A 100-wedge pack is described as plenty, because wedges are reused and the clips are not. An 80-piece set such as Flintronic at about £9.99 will not cover a kitchen in one pass. Who each kit is for is on the best tile levelling system page.

Common questions

Does a 2 mm clip set a legal floor joint under BS 5385?
No. The Tile Association, citing BS 5385-3, says a floor joint should not be less than 3 mm. A 2 mm clip does not set that joint. BS 5385-3:2024, published on 31 May 2024, is a code of practice, not a criminal offence on a home job by itself, and the paid text was not opened here. Separate spacers can hold a wider joint while the clip only levels the edge.
Are wedges and pliers in the box, or is this clips only?
Read the components line, not only the title. A complete kit lists bases, wedges or caps, and pliers or a wrench. Rezolite lists 500 bases, 100 wedges, and pliers. A bag without those parts is a refill. Buy one only when you already own wedges that fit.
How many clips do you need per square metre for 600 × 600 mm tiles?
The published estimates do not match. Tradetiler suggests about 11 clips per square metre on 600 × 600 mm tiles, and BuildWiz about 17 plus a buffer. On 24 m² the higher rate is about 470 clips with that buffer. Wedges are reused. The clips are single-use.
Will one brand's wedges fit another brand's clips?
Do not plan on it. Wedges, caps, and needles are shaped for their own bases, and these amazon.co.uk listings do not promise a cross-brand fit. Buy a matching refill, or a complete kit if you do not already own the tool. A wedge that sits loose leaves the edge short of the tension you paid for.
What tile thickness does the kit actually state?
Use the stated millimetre range, and treat a blank as unknown. Fleetise goes up to 14 mm, SHAFFER PRO 3–22 mm, Flat-Pro 3–20 mm, and Rezolite 3–16 mm. EONHANCE, Fusion Bliss, and Bihui TSL50 do not state a thickness. Screwfix's No Nonsense kit, outside these amazon.co.uk listings, states 4–10 mm. A 20 mm slab needs a range that includes 20 mm.
What can you do if the opened pack has fewer pieces than the title?
Count the pieces and keep the packaging. XMAO's bullet says 400 clips and the components line says 300, with no UK review block to settle it. One opened EONHANCE pack was described as 550 spacers and 150 wedges against a title of 600 and 200. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers goods not as described. Which? notes a 30-day right to reject.
