Stainless steel pipe cutter vs a copper cutter

Updated: October 2026

The copper slice is already in the toolbox, and the tube in front of you is stainless. A copper pipe cutter on stainless steel is the wrong way round when the label says not for stainless. The Products Compared editorial team checked UK listings of Monument’s autocut and the eight amazon.co.uk frames in this set. There was no lab cut. Prices for those frames, captured on 15 October 2026, live on the [stainless steel pipe cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/stainless-steel-pipe-cutter). The slice that says not for stainless means that

Monument’s autocut clips onto one nominal copper size. UK retailers of the 15 mm and 22 mm twin pack, including Belmore Tools, Leyland SDM and Beesley & Fildes, say it cuts only that copper size, in one direction, and not for use on stainless steel. That sentence is a ban. A 15 mm slice stays on 15 mm nominal copper, and a 22 mm slice stays on 22 mm. Those numbers are not outside diameters. The buying guide keeps that lesson. A Monument 15/22 twin pack sat around £25.50–£29.99.

Copper in an amazon title is not that warning

An amazon title can say copper and stainless together without being an autocut. The LIBRATON 900915 at about £25.99 and the LIBRATON 911210 at about £37.99 use both names in one title, then say thin stainless. Their blade line says aluminium alloy. Neither listing clips to one nominal copper size. Wostore at about £9.29 leads with copper and PVC, and a bullet still names thin-walled stainless. The included line says pipe cutter only, while the title claims a spare blade and a reamer. That clash is still not the autocut’s ban. The RIDGID 35S and 65S bullets name a stainless cutter wheel and do not name copper. Customer questions ask about copper. The bullets do not answer.

The wheel is the different purchase

A copper wheel forced into stainless rubs. The outside diameter can rise, and the groove can work-harden so the next pass skates. The different purchase is a wheel the listing names for stainless. Monument’s Size 2A, not in this set, shows the split: stainless wheel MON284I against copper wheel MON273A, on a cutter at 12–43 mm and a maximum wall of 1.5 mm. Do not borrow that 1.5 mm. KNIPEX TubiX states 2 mm and a REMS RAS Cu-INOX page states up to 4 mm. Those walls stay on those pages. In this set the named stainless wheel is RIDGID E-635, catalogue 29973, on the 35S and the 65S. The best stainless steel pipe cutter page says who the 35S is for. The 65S instruction sheet states a wall. The Libraton titles do not.

Use the copper tool on copper, and keep the complaints apart

Use the autocut on the nominal copper size printed on it, in the direction the retailers state. Use a stainless wheel when the tube is stainless, including thin handrail. A 42.4 mm rail is not 15 mm or 22 mm copper. If you now have a stainless wheel and you need the feed, the how to use page takes the sequence. Do not start that sequence with a copper slice. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 draws the line between two complaints. A cutter sold as able to cut stainless, which only marks the tube, is a match-to-description problem. Using a copper-only tool on stainless, after a label told you not to, is not that problem. The seller did not describe the slice as a stainless cutter.

Common questions

Can the copper slice in the toolbox be used on stainless?
No, when the label says not for use on stainless steel. Monument’s autocut is sold for one nominal copper size, 15 mm or 22 mm on the twin pack, and it cuts in one direction only.
Why do some titles say copper and stainless together?
They are different tools. The autocut’s UK listings forbid stainless. Libraton’s titles say copper pipe cutter and stainless steel pipe cutter, then thin stainless, and describe the blade as aluminium alloy. Wostore’s title leads with copper and a bullet names thin-walled stainless. None of those is a clip-on slice for one copper size.
Is a 15 mm autocut a 15 mm outside-diameter tool?
No. 15 mm and 22 mm are nominal copper sizes. The outside of 15 mm copper is not 15 mm. The slice is made for that named pipe, not for stainless you measured at 15 mm across. Match stainless to a frame’s outside-diameter range.
What happens if a copper wheel is wound into stainless?
It rubs. The outside can rise, and the groove can work-harden so the next pass skates instead of parting the wall. More turns on the same wheel are how that happens. Stop, and fit a wheel the listing names for stainless.
When is the copper tool the right tool?
When the tube is copper of the nominal size printed on the slice, cut in the stated direction. It is the wrong tool for stainless handrail, for a chrome pole that is actually stainless, and for any tube outside that one size. A slice already in the box is not a general pipe cutter.
Does stainless on the listing mean a wall is stated?
No. Thin stainless is not a millimetre. The document in this set that states a wall is the RIDGID 65S instruction sheet, up to 3 mm at 6–65 mm. Do not copy that number onto a Libraton, a Wostore, or a copper slice. Read diameter and wall separately even when the wheel is named.
Is E-635 the same part as a copper slice wheel?
No. E-635, catalogue 29973, is the stainless wheel RIDGID specifies for the 35S and the 65S. A copper slice wheel is a different part. Monument’s Size 2A list, not in this set, splits a stainless wheel from a copper wheel.
