Plasma cutter buying guide before the model name

Updated: October 2026

You have a single-phase inverter in an amazon.co.uk basket, or you searched for a Stahlwerk plasma cutter and landed on a different name. What you are looking at is an air plasma cutter: a power source, a torch and an earth clamp, priced in this set from £67.83 to £199.00. It will not cut until you feed it the right supply and somebody else's compressor. This plasma cutter buying guide puts those checks before the model name, so you buy the lower thickness figure and the manufacturer line, not the largest millimetre on the title. The [Stahlwerk plasma cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/stahlwerk-plasma-cutter) is the eleven-row table. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

The carton is an inverter, a torch and an earth lead. Air comes from a compressor you already own or still have to buy. None of these eleven listings includes a compressor, and none includes a helmet. Treat the machine as half a kit. One SPRIGHOLLY CUT60 review described a regulator that arrived blocked. The other half is dry air at the pressure that listing prints, a BS 1363 plug, and eye protection you add. The Health and Safety Executive treats plasma-cutting fume as hazardous under COSHH. It has not been classed as carcinogenic, and you still control it as you would welding fume.

Supply, then air

Listings print 220 V, 230 V or 240 V, and some print two figures. Keep both. The plug on a household socket is a BS 1363 plug fused at 13 A. The 50 A or 60 A on the title is output current at the torch, not wall current. Several reviewers in this set outran a 13 A fuse. That limit, including the review that contradicts a "no blown fuses" bullet, is on the plasma cutter 13 amp page. Air is the second gate, and it is not one figure. You may see 60 L/min at 0.4 MPa or 90 PSI, 30–70 psi, a minimum of 6 bar, or 0.35–0.5 MPa. One Reboot 45 A review used an 8 litre compressor for short runs and a 50 litre tank for a longer cut. If yours is a tiny DIY unit, buy air before you buy current.

Clean cut, not the title

Clean cut is the thickness that leaves an edge you can use. Severance, or the maximum, is the thickness the arc can part, often with a ragged edge. Buying the larger number as the everyday cut is the mistake. The PLC65 claims 16 mm and has no UK review line. Two listings disagree with themselves, so take the lower printed figure until a review measures a cut. The CUT65 Pro title says up to 18 mm clean. A bullet says 16 mm clean and 18 mm severance. A verified amazon.co.uk review called the 18 mm pitch false and said 8 mm mild steel was a struggle. The Reboot 45 A prints both a 16 mm clean cut and an 8–10 mm clean cut, plus 16 mm severance. Do not average those lines. Painted or rusty steel is the subject of the pilot arc plasma cutter page.

The name on the manufacturer line

Many people arrived by searching Stahlwerk. Stahlwerk UK sells its own 230 V CUT 50 Pilot, and a 400 V CUT 60 that does not belong on a domestic socket. The warranty is handled from Norsemen Safety, 71 Sydenham Road, Belfast, BT3 9DJ. None of these eleven ASINs is that brand. The manufacturer lines are Reboot, SPRIGHOLLY, PLASMARGON, Haxiaoer and SUSEMSE. Shelf prices that day ran from £67.83 to £199.00. A 5.0 from one or two reviews, including a review written before any cut, is not the same evidence as 4.6 from 28. If the name you wanted was Stahlwerk, buy from that seller.

If it is wrong in the first month

Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you 30 days to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality. One SPRIGHOLLY CUT60 account is a ceramic that split after about half an hour, a replacement dead after about two hours, and no remedy once 30 days had passed. Fit air and cut a piece of scrap inside that window. If the torch faults, catches fire, or will not hold an arc, stop and use the rejection route.

Common questions

Will it run on a normal UK socket?
Only if the input stays inside a BS 1363 13 A fuse. The 50 A or 60 A on the title is cutting current, not wall current. Several reviews in this set say the fuse opened once the dial went up.
Do I need a compressor for a plasma cutter?
Yes, for every machine in this set. No listing includes one. Match the air line on your listing: 60 L/min at 0.4 MPa or 90 PSI, 30–70 psi, 6 bar minimum, or 0.35–0.5 MPa. A small tank can manage a short cut. One Reboot 45 A review moved from an 8 litre compressor to 50 litres when the cut was longer.
What thickness will a 50 amp plasma cutter cut?
Use the clean-cut figure, and where the listing prints two, use the lower one until a review measures a cut. In this set a title can say 18 mm while a reviewer struggles at 8 mm mild steel. Severance is a parting cut, not the thickness you should plan a bracket around. We did not measure these machines.
Is an Amazon plasma cutter a Stahlwerk?
No. These listings are Reboot, SPRIGHOLLY, PLASMARGON, Haxiaoer and SUSEMSE. Stahlwerk UK's cutters, and the warranty at Norsemen Safety in Belfast, are a different purchase. Do not copy a Stahlwerk specification or a multi-year warranty onto an amazon.co.uk ASIN from this set.
Why do the title and the bullet give different thicknesses?
Because some of these pages were written as two claims. The CUT65 Pro title says 18 mm clean and a bullet says 16 mm clean with 18 mm severance. The Reboot 45 A prints both 16 mm clean and 8–10 mm clean. Keep the conflict. Do not average it into a thickness the listing never stood behind.
