Pipe cutter for plastic pipe

Updated: October 2026

A Speedfit coupler weeps when a fingernail finds the groove a wheel left in the skin. A pipe cutter for plastic pipe is a shear that leaves a square end and an unmarked outside, so the O-ring can seal. The product table is the [pipe cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/pipe-cutter). This page stays on PEX, barrier pipe and thin PVC in this folder. We used amazon.co.uk listings and the John Guest guide, and we did not run a lab test. A wheel score is not a plastic cut

John Guest’s July 2024 Speedfit guide is the rule you can quote. Cut the pipe square. Do not leave score marks. Fit the insert. A hacksaw burr marks the O-ring, and a copper wheel is designed to score. Toolwiz forbids PVC in the warm-tips bullet. Sharp-tec minis and the SHALL kit still list PVC next to copper. Treat that as a sales line. One SHALL review compressed 15 mm plastic push-fit. None of the shears here is the John Guest JG-TS, listed to 22 mm and absent from this set. A square shear can still follow the method: unmarked skin, insert in. Hep2O and generic PEX want the same unmarked end. If you can see a spiral from a wheel, cut that length off and start again. The type decision sits on the pipe cutter buying guide.

Match the jaw to 15–22 mm or to 32–40 mm waste

DOWELL is a spring shear listed 0–32 mm at about £7.99, 4.4 from 514 reviews. Copper is not claimed. UK notes include 15 mm PVC, 28 mm Speedfit in a tight space, and hose. Complaints include a slipping spring. For 15 mm and 22 mm barrier pipe this jaw already matches. EZUVITA lists 35 mm at about £5.50, 4.1 from 161 reviews. Hard, thick PVC needs extra length from the mouth. Reviews report an angled end, a crushed pipe, and a blunt blade. A 68 mm downpipe is outside 35 mm. THINKWORK lists 42 mm at about £17.95, 4.5 from 44 reviews, on PVC, PEX, PE and multilayer pipe. That is the wider plastic pick for 32–40 mm waste if the ratchet opens. One UK note says fingers go in the mechanism after every click and the blades were dull. A 15 mm barrier pipe does not need that jaw. After the cut, fit the insert.

A stuck 42 mm ratchet is a return

The Sharp-tec ratchet lists 3–42 mm on PVC, PEX and similar plastic at about £12.99, 3.3 from 39 reviews. Several buyers say the jaws will not open as supplied. One Vine reviewer put a socket on the compression nut before the blade moved. That is a return. A half-open ratchet crushes the pipe you care about. If THINKWORK arrives the same way, send it back. A working ratchet closes in clicks with the pipe square to the blade. EZUVITA’s tip is the same idea: keep thick PVC out of the last 10 mm of the stick, because the mouth of the jaw is where crush starts. Named picks sit on the best pipe cutter page.

Not soil pipe, and not gas

Forty-two millimetres is not 110 mm soil pipe. A live drain or a shared stack is a plumber’s job, and a 35 mm shear will not cut a 68 mm downpipe. John Guest says Speedfit is not for gas. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 put domestic gas work with a Gas Safe registered engineer. A wheel left over from the copper job is also the wrong tool. Cut the marked end off, use a shear, fit the insert, and only then push the fitting home. If the pipe crushed, cut back to round tube.

Common questions

Can I cut Speedfit with a copper pipe slice?
No. The slice scores the skin. John Guest says score marks leak past the O-ring. Use a shear, keep the outside unmarked, and fit the insert. A PVC bullet on a wheel listing does not change that.
What cutter do I need for 15 mm barrier pipe?
A shear that opens more than 15 mm. In this folder DOWELL’s 0–32 mm spring is the usual match. THINKWORK’s 42 mm ratchet also fits but is more tool than you need for 15 mm. Fit the insert after the cut.
Will a 42 mm ratchet cut 40 mm waste?
If the jaws open to 42 mm and the blade is square, 40 mm waste is the job those listings describe. It is not 110 mm soil pipe. Check the first cut on a leftover offcut.
Why did the shear crush the pipe?
The pipe sat in the mouth of the jaw, the blade was blunt, or the tool is the EZUVITA listing with crush notes. Seat the tube fully, keep it perpendicular, and recut if the end is oval. A stuck Sharp-tec ratchet is a return.
Do I still need a pipe insert?
Yes, on Speedfit and on other barrier systems that specify one. The cutter only squares the end. The insert supports the wall so the O-ring can seal. John Guest’s July 2024 guide still tells you to fit it.
When do I hire someone for soil pipe?
When the pipe is 110 mm, the drain is live, or you cannot isolate a shared stack. A 42 mm plastic cutter in this set is not that job. Call a plumber rather than stepping up the same ratchet.
