Pipe cutter for copper pipe

Updated: October 2026

The olive weeps because the 15 mm copper end is flat. A pipe cutter for copper pipe has one job in a UK house: leave a square, round end on 15 mm or 22 mm tube so the olive can sit. That is a wheel tool. The [pipe cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/pipe-cutter) lists every kept cutter. This page stays on copper sizes, clearance, and what a crush looks like in this folder. If the next pipe is Speedfit, you want a different tool. We used amazon.co.uk listings and did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

15 mm and 22 mm are the sizes that matter

UK domestic copper is sold by outside diameter. Under a basin, a radiator or a boiler flow you almost always meet 15 mm or 22 mm. 28 mm turns up on some mains. Yorkshire Copper maps those sizes to BS EN 1057 R250 tube: 15 × 0.7 mm, 22 × 0.9 mm and 28 × 0.9 mm. That standard rates the tube, not the cutter. A 15 mm slice will not close on 22 mm. A 3–22 mm mini reaches 22 mm at the stop; one Sharp-tec mini review had a millimetre or two to spare. Toolwiz, at 3–28 mm, is the only small wheel here that states 28 mm. The fixed twins stop at 22 mm. 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm R250 ovals if you clamp the knob. Toolwiz states a wall limit of 3.8 mm and forbids thick-wall tube. Stainless and chrome-plated tube are outside that.

Slice pair or a mini wheel

PLOWFAR at about £13.99 and HAUTMEC at about £14.99 are the 15 mm and 22 mm pairs, each with two spare wheels stated. You still need orbit room. The Sharp-tec mini lists 3–22 mm at about £9.99. Toolwiz lists 3–28 mm at about £6.43 and is the best value copper mini here, with PVC and stainless excluded in the bullets. Choose a mini when you can rotate it and will feed the knob lightly. Choose the twin pack when you want a spare wheel in the box. The Sharp-tec 5–50 mm set at about £19.99 and 1.2 kg is the top pick on the comparison score. SHALL at the same price adds a mini and two deburrers and claims thin stainless. A plastic shear is the wrong tool on copper. DOWELL does not claim it.

A flat end will not take an olive

Compression fittings need a round, square, undamaged end. Mueller’s domestic note is the same list: cut square, remove the burr, keep the outside free of deep scratches, and re-round crushed annealed tube. A flat is a failed cut. The olive rides the oval. The Sharp-tec single 15 mm slice at about £8.99 sits at 3.6 from 92 reviews. UK buyers report flat spots, a crushed end, or a wheel that spins without finishing. One reviewer said this body was not effective on 22 mm. Skip it for a first olive joint. PLOWFAR still shows crush or jam notes in a minority of reviews. HAUTMEC has a Gas Safe engineer who said the 15 mm slice tracks off while 22 mm cuts well. Toolwiz tracks one groove if you feed lightly. If the end is already flat, cut again further back or re-round annealed tube, then ream. The procedure is how to cut copper pipe with a pipe cutter.

What this folder does not cover

28 mm is mostly missing from the fixed slices. Toolwiz states 3–28 mm, and the 5–50 mm Sharp-tec and the SHALL 6–50 mm cutter reach it on a bench. There is no 28 mm clip-on pair here. Stainless is a claim. SHALL names thin stainless. Toolwiz forbids it. A handlebar review is not a reason to put these wheels on stainless pipe. After a copper cut, leave Speedfit alone. John Guest says a score mark leaks past the O-ring. Named picks sit on the best pipe cutter page. Gas is out. Domestic gas work is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. A weeping olive after a square, reamed end is the fitting or the pipe.

Common questions

What cutter do I need for 15 mm copper?
A 15 mm slice, or a mini that includes 15 mm in its range. In this folder that is the 15 mm half of a PLOWFAR or HAUTMEC pair, Toolwiz, or the Sharp-tec 3–22 mm mini. Avoid the 3.6-star Sharp-tec 15 mm slice if you need the first end to stay round.
Do I also need 22 mm?
If any of the run is 22 mm, yes. A 15 mm slice will not close on it. The twin packs exist for that reason. A 3–22 mm mini can cover both if you still have room to turn it.
Will a 3–22 mm mini actually cut 22 mm copper?
The listing includes 22 mm. One UK review on the Sharp-tec mini cut 22 mm with a millimetre or two to spare. Treat that as a tight maximum, and feed lightly. A 3–28 mm Toolwiz has more thread left at 22 mm.
Why did the slice leave a flat?
The wheel pinched instead of tracking, or the body is the 15 mm slice with the flat-spot reviews. An oval or a flat will not take an olive. Cut again if you have length, and stop using the feed like a clamp.
Is the 5–50 mm set better for copper than a twin pack?
On a bench, it covers more diameters and includes a deburrer, which is why it is the top pick on the comparison score. Under a basin it is a 1.2 kg body with twelve reviews. For 15 mm and 22 mm household copper the twin pack is the closer tool.
Can I use the same tool on Speedfit after the copper cut?
No. A wheel scores plastic. That score leaks past the O-ring. Keep the copper cutter for copper and buy a shear for barrier pipe.
