Circle punch vs circle cutter

Updated: October 2026

You opened one amazon.co.uk search and saw a lever punch next to a spinning compass. Both say they cut circles. They do not share a job. This page is circle punch vs circle cutter: when the fixed punch is the right family, and when the rotary tool is. Every price stays on the [paper circle cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/paper-circle-cutter). The twelve listings were read on 19 October 2026, from about £6.99 to about £21.41. Same search, two mechanisms

A punch is a die you press. The hole is the size of the cutter, usually 8 mm, 15 mm, 25 mm or 2 inches here. You feed the sheet into a short throat and pull a lever. A rotary cutter is a blade on an arm. You set a diameter, pin or press the centre, and turn. One tool repeats a packet size. The other covers a range and usually marks the middle. This set has six punches and six rotary or beam tools. Search results do not label that split. If you only make 25 mm gift tags, you do not need a 15 cm range. If you cut a 12 cm window, you do not need three tiny dies.

When a punch is the one to buy

Buy a punch when the size is on the packet and you will cut it many times. Fifty 15 mm dots is a punch afternoon. Ezydka at about £12.89 has 4.3 from 207, the largest matching sample among the 8/15/25 mm packs. The UCEC 2 inch at about £14.84 is the punch when the only size you need is 50.8 mm. Some punches claim a sliding scrap tray. They do not list spare blades. When the cutter dulls, you replace the tool. A Flhlxzm review says you only reach about one radius in from the edge. You cannot punch the centre of A4, and you cannot invent a 10 cm hole. A stiff lever is not a reason to buy a compass for 15 mm dots.

When a rotary cutter is the one to buy

Buy a rotary cutter when the diameter changes and you can place the tool in the middle of the sheet. Rayher 89770000 at about £21.41 claims 2.6–15 cm, three spare blades, and 4.2 from 914 reviews. That is the top pick when the size changes under 15 cm. Other rotary claims have no reviews, two ratings, a floor of about 4 inches, or no range at all. You need a mat and practice. Rayher reviews describe a second pass and a spiral if the lock is loose. The pin that keeps the circle round also marks the middle. If a photo or a badge cannot take that hole, a compass is the wrong family. A floor of about 4 inches, or 8 cm, is the wrong family for tags.

If the centre of the circle must stay blank

UK reviewers of NT C-1500 say it can cut a circle without a pin hole. The extract does not print a diameter. The related C-1500P page states 1.8–17 cm. Say both facts together. The scale is hard to read, thin paper tears, and the centre foot can hide a needle. At about £14.44, with 4.2 from 1,111 reviews, it is the best value when a blank middle is the brief. It is still not a lever punch. Repeated size near the edge: buy a punch. Changing size up to 15 cm: buy a compass and accept the pin. The rest of the decision order is on the paper circle cutter buying guide.

Common questions

Which is faster for fifty identical dots?
A punch. You set the sheet in the throat and press. Ezydka’s 207-review sample is the busiest 8/15/25 mm pack here. A rotary cutter that you reset each time is the slower tool for that job.
Which can cut 12 cm and 4 cm with one tool?
A rotary cutter with a range that includes both. Rayher claims 2.6–15 cm. One rotary listing cannot go under about 4 inches. Another starts at 8 cm. A punch pack cannot invent 12 cm.
Will I get a hole in the middle?
On most compass cutters, yes. Rayher pins the centre. NT reviewers describe cuts without that hole. Punches cut a disc and leave the hole in the sheet, not a pin mark in the disc.
Can a punch reach the centre of the page?
Usually not. One UK review puts the reach at about one radius from the edge. That is a throat limit, not a pressure problem. Place a rotary tool on the middle of the sheet instead.
Do I need spare blades for a punch?
These punch listings do not name spares. Rotary listings often claim three. When a punch dulls, you replace the tool. When a Rayher blade dulls, reviewers swap the one under the pad.
Is a beam cutter a third type?
Yes, in this folder. NT C-1500 is a beam-style adjustable cutter. Reviewers treat it as the pin-free option. It is still not a lever punch, and the extract does not print a diameter.
What should I buy if I only make gift tags?
A punch whose size matches the tag, often 25 mm or 2 inches. Do not buy a rotary tool whose floor is about 4 inches or 8 cm for that job. Do not buy Rayher unless the tags change size every time.
