Carpet cutter: which mechanism to buy

Updated: October 2026

You have searched for a carpet cutter and landed on three different tools, plus a trade kit this comparison does not sell. A sprung-arm push cutter, a pair of shears and a 4 V rotary head can all carry the same words on amazon.co.uk, and a fitter’s knife sits in the same browse list. The job decides the mechanism before any star rating does. If you are lifting an old carpet for the council, sectioning underlay, or breaking down boxes, you are not buying the same thing as someone who must tuck a new edge onto gripper. This guide stays with those choices. Prices and the twelve-listing ranking live on the [carpet cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/carpet-cutter).

What shoppers mean by a carpet cutter

On amazon.co.uk the phrase covers a short angled blade on sprung arms, long shears, and a guarded cordless head that usually lists carpet beside cardboard. A dolphin or hook knife is a fourth tool, and B&Q uses that knife at the skirting, not the shears. A loop-pile row cutter, such as a Crain 303 at £51.77 excluding VAT, cuts between rows. It is not one of these listings. A Plymouth shop sells that 50° pattern, about 230 mm, at £8 including VAT. That is the shape of the Dapetz listing, not a guided trimmer.

Match the tool to the job

A fitted edge that must tuck onto gripper is a knife job. B&Q’s guide creases the surplus and cuts with a dolphin knife about 5 mm above the pile. Shears and a sprung cutter do not replace that step. The comparison with a knife is on carpet cutter vs carpet knife. Cutting an old carpet into pieces you can lift is where shears earn their place. Reviewers who mention carpet, underlay and tiles cluster on the long C.JET shears. On Dapetz, some people sectioned old carpet, and more than one review says carpet tiles pulled. A lookalike at about £4.99 is not the same tool once the review text differs. None of these twelve listings is a row cutter.

What the amazon.co.uk prices in this set buy

Shelf prices on these listings on 19 October 2026 run from about £4.99 to about £43.89. About £4.99 to about £6.99 is sprung-arm cutters and the Lotnery shear. About £13.99 to about £24.99 covers a light 4-in-1 shear, most rotary heads, and the 250 mm C.JET shears at about £23. About £36.99 to about £43.89 is two SnapFresh rotary cutters. The extra money buys a battery or LED claim, not a seam guide.

What to check on the listing

Read the thickness line before the stars. SHALL states up to 6 mm, SnapFresh SKS7 up to 6.35 mm, and Masaki about 1.5–5 mm of cardboard. A safety lock does not raise that limit. If no millimetre figure is printed, do not invent one from the word carpet in the title. Powered limits are on electric carpet cutter. Sprung cutters here change with a single screw. One UK review of the unbranded cutter at about £4.99 says a notched utility blade will not fit the holed blade. Lotnery scores 2.6 from 21 reviews, and those reviews say it did not cut carpet. If the goods are not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 generally gives 30 days to reject.

Which mechanism matches the cut

If the edge must tuck onto gripper, budget a sharp knife and fresh blades. If you are cutting an old carpet into pieces you can lift, long shears are the mechanism whose reviews describe that work, and a sprung cutter is a straight push only when the spring can hold the sheet. If the job is boxes, stay inside the millimetres a rotary head prints. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Common questions

Is a carpet cutter the same as carpet scissors?
Often the search is the same and the tool is not. Shears are a scissor action. A sprung-arm carpet cutter pushes material onto a short angled blade. A 4 V rotary head is a third mechanism, with a guard and a printed thickness. Open the pictures and see which of those three you are holding.
Will a £5 sprung-arm tool cut carpet tiles?
Do not assume it will. On Dapetz, more than one UK review says the cutter pulled carpet tiles, while other reviews say it cut carpet and underlay. The two lookalikes at about £4.99 are thinner: one jammed after a first use, and the other was tried on cardboard only.
Do I need a 10 inch shear or a small multi-tool?
Floorwise points 10 inch and 12 inch shears at heavy-grade carpet. In this set the 250 mm C.JET pair is the long shear, and the DURATECH 4-in-1 at 100 g is the small one, with reviews that call the blades short. For a large old carpet, the short pair is the limitation.
When is a 4 V rotary cutter the wrong buy?
Buy it for cardboard inside the printed limit, and leave it when the pile or the hessian is thicker than that line, or when no line is printed. Folded carpet is more than one thickness. The guard will not start a cut it cannot enter. A fitted edge is still a knife cut.
What should I buy for one room of fitted carpet?
Budget a sharp knife and fresh blades, plus gripper and a way to stretch the carpet. Knee kickers are not in this product set. Shears or a sprung cutter can still cut underlay and waste, but they do not tuck the edge. If the room is stairs, a patterned seam or a damp subfloor, a fitter is the sensible stop.
What if the listing says carpet and the reviews talk about boxes?
Believe the reviews for what the tool has been used on, and the printed thickness for what the brand allows. Carpet in a title is a keyword. Cardboard across hundreds of reviews is a usage pattern. If you needed carpet and received a box cutter, the 30-day rejection right is the route to look up.
