How to use an air compressor

Updated: October 2026

The carton is open on the garage floor and you are about to plug a new compressor into a UK socket. How to use an air compressor, for this amazon.co.uk set, is a short sequence: check the filter and the lead, run it where you can switch it off, drain a workshop tank afterwards, and stay with a PCP pump that does not stop itself. This page does not rank the eleven listings. The [Weldinger air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/weldinger-air-compressor) does that. A qualifying purchase from our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. These steps come from the listings and public UK guidance.

Before you switch it on

Look at the inlet filter before the switch. Reviewers of the Hyundai HY5508X reported a crushed filter, which is a reason to contact the seller and leave the compressor unused. The same reviews say the hose was missing, so do not assume a brad nailer can be connected tonight. Then look at the plug without taking it apart. You want a BS 1363 plug, a clamped sheath, and no tape over a joint. If the lead looks wrong, stop and use the air compressor UK plug page first. The Hyundai 24 litre and the Draper 02115 state an auto cut-out. Several PCP listings do not. If you are still choosing between a garage tank and a rifle pump, settle that on the workshop versus PCP page first.

Run a workshop tank and drain it

The safety valve is protection. HSE guidance in HSG39 treats it that way on a receiver, so use the drain and leave the valve alone. Oil-free means no oil fill. Condensate is still normal, and the trap on the HY7524X does not replace the tank drain. Air Supply, a UK supplier, describes an after-use drain. Switch the compressor off and unplug it. Release the remaining pressure through the outlet, holding the hose so it cannot whip. Open the tank drain and let the condensate into a container. Close the drain before you store the tank or run it again. If a stated pressure switch will not cut out, switch it off. Do not hold the safety valve open as a substitute. The buying guide explains the litres and airflow claims if the tank empties faster than you expected.

Filling with a PCP pump

A PCP pump here may have almost no workshop receiver. The rifle cylinder is the vessel you are filling, so you stay with the gauge. SDKEHUI B0DYSKSYL8 and B0HDCGVGKV are manual-stop pumps. The precaution on B0DYSKSYL8 says to switch off at 30 MPa and bleed slowly. Thirty megapascals is 300 bar. A workshop Hyundai would have cut out on its own. These two will not. TUXING B0D17FCGM4 does not state an auto-stop either. Stop at the rifle maker's fill pressure if you reach it first. One review on SDKEHUI B0FMQXKKMG disputes a 4,500 psi claim, so the gauge in front of you outranks a title. A 24 litre Hyundai will not stand in: its band is about 100 to 118 psi. If the pump smells hot or the gauge sticks, stop the fill.

When you stop

Stop if the pump smells of burning, overheats, or the gauge is thrown, stuck, or unreadable. Reviews of HYCHIKA and TUXING machines mention smoke, heat, and a failed power supply. Those are stop signals, not a prompt to open the housing. Reviews of SDKEHUI B0DYSKSYL8 and TUXING B0D17FCGM4 describe exposed live parts. Leave that unit unused. If you can switch off at the wall without touching the compressor, do that, then stop. A damaged lead, a failed gauge, or exposed conductors need a competent person. At work, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 can apply. HAE bulletin 45 puts a written-scheme figure at 250 bar litres, and a 24 litre tank at 8 bar is 192 if you multiply those numbers. Hobby use at home is not automatically work use. Where the goods are not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the route with the seller.

Common questions

How do I drain water out of the tank?
Switch off, unplug, release pressure through the outlet, open the tank drain, catch the condensate, and close the drain. Air Supply says to do that after every use. Condensate is normal on an oil-free tank, because oil-free describes the pump, not dry air. The condensate trap on the Hyundai HY7524X does not replace this drain.
Can I empty the tank through the safety valve?
Use the drain, and leave the safety valve as protection. HSE guidance in HSG39 treats that valve as a protective device, not as a tap. These tanks have not been inspected as industrial receivers, so the habit is the part that transfers. If a stated pressure switch fails to cut out, switch off at the compressor and then at the plug. Holding the safety valve open is not a substitute cut-out.
How do I use a PCP pump that does not stop itself?
Stay with the gauge and switch the pump off yourself. SDKEHUI B0DYSKSYL8 and B0HDCGVGKV are manual-stop listings. The B0DYSKSYL8 precaution says to switch off at 30 MPa, which is 300 bar, and to bleed slowly. TUXING B0D17FCGM4 does not state an auto-stop. Stop at the rifle maker's pressure if that comes first.
What do I do if it smells of burning?
Switch it off and leave it off. A burning smell, heavy heat, or smoke, which reviews of HYCHIKA and TUXING units have described, ends the job. Do not open the housing. If terminals are already exposed, as described on B0DYSKSYL8 and B0D17FCGM4, leave the unit unused. A competent person should take a failed lead, gauge, or motor.
When should I stop and get someone else involved?
Hand it over when the lead is damaged, the gauge has failed, conductors are exposed, or the repair means opening the motor. At work, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 may apply. HAE bulletin 45 discusses a written scheme from 250 bar litres. A 24 litre tank at 8 bar is 192 on that multiplication. Home hobby use is not automatically that regime.
