50 litre air compressor buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A 50 litre air compressor buying guide starts when you treat the tank as the whole specification. You are choosing an upright electric piston compressor on amazon.co.uk, and 50 litres is stored air, not the air a tool receives while the trigger stays down. The check order is airflow label, stated pressure, noise label, plug or adaptor, then shape. The five-way table is the [vertical air compressor 50 L comparison](/hub/compressors/vertical-air-compressor-50l). The Products Compared editorial team read the kept listings on 15 October 2026. There was no lab test. Prices are GBP and will move. If you buy through our amazon.co.uk links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What 50 litres does and does not store

The receiver holds a charge so a short job can run after the pump has stopped. It does not raise continuous output. The Einhell title carries 50 L, and 240 L/min sits beside it unlabelled. If you buy the tank and skip the airflow label, the cylinder refills the moment the tool wants air the whole time. Oil-free, where it is stated, means no oil bath. Water still condenses.

Airflow type before tank size

Only the SIP Airmate, SIP-05483, states both: 9.6 CFM displacement and 4.7 CFM free air delivery at 8 bar. The free-air figure is about half the displacement. The maker page is the source for that pair. Amazon stays the source for price, stars, and the 62 dB cell. The other litre lines are not free air delivery. The noise decision is on the quiet 50 litre air compressor garage page.

Pressure, oil-free, and the noise label

Eight bar and 10 bar are stated ceilings, not the tool pressure. The Einhell prints 10 bar in the title and a bullet, with no pressure row, and the title says 240 V beside 230 V AC in the table. Leave both. Oil-free is stated for the ABAC, the SIP, the Einhell, and, in a bullet, the D230. The DST table does not state lubrication, so this page does not call that pump oil-free. On 15 October 2026 the quieter pair cost about £263.98 and about £268.52, against about £195.99 to about £212.95 for the louder listings. A lower label is not more airflow.

UK mains and the plug line

UK mains are 230 V. A domestic BS 1363 socket expects a standard plug or a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse. That rule does not certify any adaptor in this set. The DST bullet says UK Plug and the voltage cell says 50 V. Do not correct that cell. If the plate and the listing disagree, stop. The D230 weight cell says 30 g and the power cell says 1.47 W. Those strings are not a weight you can lift. At work, 50 litres at 8 bar is 400 bar litres and at 10 bar is 500, above the 250 bar-litre line. A hobbyist outside work sits outside the way HSE describes that scope. None of these five is certified here.

Shape last

All five kept machines are upright. Stated heights run from about 83 cm on the D230 to 101 cm on the ABAC, on short-side footprints of about 32–40 cm. Shape does not add free air, and it does not repair a voltage cell. If the ceiling or a bench is the limit, use the vertical vs horizontal air compressor page.

Common questions

Does a 50 litre tank mean the compressor can run a tool continuously?
No. The receiver stores a charge and does not increase what the pump delivers while a tool stays open. Reviewers describe tyres and a brad nailer as workable on these upright machines. A sander or a continuous blow gun empties the tank. That is a review pattern, not a test of your tool.
What is the difference between free air delivery, displacement, and aspirated litres?
Displacement is theoretical swept volume. Free air delivery is usable outlet air at a stated pressure. Aspirated litres are an intake-style figure. Only the SIP states both 9.6 CFM displacement and 4.7 CFM free air delivery. The 220, 240, 150, and 222 L/min lines are not labelled free air delivery, and this guide does not convert them.
Is 8 bar or 10 bar the number that matters?
Both are stated maxima, not the tool pressure. The SIP and the DST state 8 bar. The ABAC and the D230 state 10 bar in the specification material. The Einhell's 10 bar is in the title and a bullet, not in a pressure row. You set the regulator after the first fill, which is a different step from reading the ceiling.
Which of these five states a fitted UK 13 A plug?
Only the SIP states a fitted 13 A plug on a 1.3 m cable. The ABAC includes a Type G adaptor. The Einhell and the D230 do not state a fitted plug. The DST bullet says UK Plug and the voltage cell says 50 V, so you read the plate rather than correcting the cell.
Can the stated decibel figure be compared across all five?
Only like for like. The cells say 59, 62, 90, 95, and 97 dB, and this comparison did not measure them. Do not subtract one from another. The SIP maker page separates 62 dB(A) LpA from 84 dB(A) LwA. Whether 59 or 62 dB is the garage answer is a separate page.
Why are some weight, power, and voltage cells left unchanged?
They are what the listing printed on 15 October 2026. The DST voltage cell says 50 V. The D230 weight cell says 30 g and the power cell says 1.47 W. Editing them to a plausible workshop figure would hide the conflict you need to see before you pay.
