Sandblast rust off metal

Updated: 21.10.2026

A spanner with surface rust and a bonnet with bubbles along the edge are not the same job. Both look like a reason to sandblast rust off metal. A handheld gun in this amazon.co.uk set can cut rust on thick steel in a short burst. The same jet can dish a flat panel, and UK blast shops treat that warp as permanent. The rows are the [sandblaster comparison](/hub/compressors/sandblaster). The Products Compared editorial team used the 19 October 2026 listings and public UK shop guidance. It is not a lab test. Spot rust a gun can reach

Light rust on a bracket, a casting, a hinge, or a tool is what these hoppers are sized for. A 900 cc InoKraft cup or a 600 cm³ BGS container is a few minutes of blasting. InoKraft reviewers describe baking soda on castings. The gun wins when the rust sits in a corner a wire wheel cannot hold. BGS reviewers reached bare metal at close range. That is the result you want on thick steel and the result you do not want on a door skin. One of those reviews used a 25 kg bag on a single axle. A 600 cm³ container does not hold 25 kg, so that axle was already a sack job. The Metabo SSP 1000 is described for small areas and corners, if your compressor can approach 300 litres per minute at 7 bar. Dry air and a tested shut-off are on how to use a sandblasting gun.

Media for rust, not sand

The gun is not the abrasive. Builders' sand, paving sand, and kiln-dried sand are prohibited as blasting abrasives in the UK. The statute and the substitutes are on the sandblasting media page. Brown aluminium oxide is the cutting end of the abrasives named here. The BGS listing specifies grain 46–100, which is 106–425 µm. It bites scale, and it also cuts sound metal if you dwell. Glass bead is slower and kinder. InoKraft reviewers used fine glass on brass. Soda is the gentle end. Frost, the UK classic-car supplier, says soda leaves a film you wipe off with a damp cloth and clean water before paint.

Panels, wheels, and brass

The same grit that cleans a bracket can move a door skin. UK shops describe large flat panels warping when pressure and media are wrong, and they treat that movement as permanent. Able Blast Cleaning describes taking aluminium panels down toward about 10 psi in their own process. That is a shop method, not a setting on the BGS 5 mm tip or the InoKraft nozzles. Rustbuster's UK guidance says most non-professionals should get advice before media-blasting a vehicle, because damage is easy. Alloy wheels disappointed reviewers on the BGS listing. A close pass that bares a bracket will mark a spoke. Brass is the other soft stop. On a decorative part, test a hidden edge and stop when the colour changes. Which gun to buy for a bracket is on the best sandblaster gun page.

After the blast

Bare steel flash-rusts. Shops clean and prime the same day. This comparison has no timed flash-rust figure for these guns, so do not treat a number of hours as a measured result. Soda needs the Frost wash before paint, or the film sits under the primer. Wipe dust out of the pores before the tin opens. Do not expect a shop blast grade such as SA 2.5 from a 900 cc hopper. Old paint is the other stop. CN7 names lead as a possible hazard in coatings you might blast. If the paint could be lead, a hobby gun in the drive is the wrong method. Bag the dust, and do not wash a lead-suspect slurry into a drain.

Common questions

Can a handheld sandblaster remove rust?
Yes, on thick metal and in a small area, if the compressor can hold the gun's printed air figure and the abrasive is not sand. An axle that consumed a 25 kg bag, or a bonnet, is outside these cups. A wire wheel is often better when you can see the rust and you want less mess.
What media cuts rust without being builders' sand?
Aluminium oxide cuts scale. The BGS listing names brown aluminium oxide, grain 46–100. Glass bead is slower. Soda is gentler and leaves a film Frost says to wash off before paint. Builders' sand, paving sand, and kiln-dried sand stay out of the gun.
Will it damage thin car panels?
It can, and UK shops describe that warp as permanent. Able's aluminium process goes down toward about 10 psi, which is their shop method, not a setting on these amazon.co.uk guns. A door, a wing, or a bonnet is the wrong job for this hopper.
Is soda blasting enough for heavy rust?
No. Soda suits light contamination and some castings, which is how InoKraft reviewers used it. It will not chew heavy scale the way aluminium oxide does, and it leaves a film you wash off before paint.
How fast does bare steel flash-rust?
Fast enough that shops prime the same day. This set has no stopwatch result you can quote in minutes. Plan the primer for that day, after dust is off and, if you used soda, after the film is washed.
Can I blast alloy wheels or brass?
Alloy rims disappointed BGS reviewers. The metal is thin, and a jet that cleans a bracket will mark a spoke. Brass is softer. Test a hidden spot only on a non-structural part, and stop when the colour changes.
Should I blast a whole wing at home?
No. A wing is a large thin panel, often with old paint that may contain lead. Spot rust on a bracket can stay at home. A shell goes to a blaster who does shells. Taking the wing off the car does not change that.
