Pistol grip vs lever grease gun

Updated: 21.10.2026

The nipple is on a trailer coupling, one hand is already on the hitch, and the gun needs a second hand you do not have. That is the pistol grip vs lever grease gun decision. A pistol leaves one hand on the coupler. A lever wants a two-handed stroke and, on published figures, moves more grease per pump. This page uses the guns in the [grease gun comparison](/hub/compressors/grease-gun). The split was set out on 19 October 2026 from those listings. We did not measure output on a bench.

What your free hand is doing

Stand at the worst nipple you actually grease. If the coupler has to stay square while you lean on the vehicle, a lever makes you let go of something. MIG Welding Forum owners who work underneath say the other hand is holding the body. Cromwell's category page describes the same split: lever as two-handed, pistol as one-handed. The lever earns the job when the nipple is in the open, on a bench or a tractor you can face square-on. Imagining you will always have room is how a lever ends up in a wheel arch. Draper's Expert 06827 converts between the two actions, with 1/8 inch BSPT and a 450 mm hose, and Tooled-up has listed it around £52 to £55 including VAT. It is not one of the eleven listings here.

Output and pressure, without a fake test

Machinery Lubrication gives typical stroke figures of about 1.28 g for a lever and about 0.86 g for a pistol, and warns that real guns run from about 0.5 g to more than 3 g. Those are that article's typical values, not a measurement of the Draper 47807 or the Bravex. Expect the lever to move more grease per stroke once both are primed. Do not quote 1.28 g for these ASINs. In this set the Bravex states 6000 psi and the Draper states 8000 psi (55 MPa). Draper's table for the 06827, which is not in this set, lists pistol mode at 4500 psi and lever mode at 7000 psi. That does not make the lever safer. The Health and Safety Executive has recorded hand-pumped guns above 600 bar. An air lock makes both actions deliver nothing. Bleeding is the first half of the how to use a grease gun page.

The pistol and the lever in this set

The clearest pistol here is the Bravex B07BK2ZD4N at £23.99. It states 6000 psi, an 18 inch hose, a short metal tube, and an air bleeder, with 4.6 from 5,144 reviews. Cartridge size is not stated. That is the gun for a drawbar or a wheel arch. The KRETLAW pistol kit at £29.99, stated at 7000 psi with 4.3 from 1,170 reviews, is the same one-hand answer with extra hoses. The clearest lever with a stated cartridge is the Draper 47807 at £15.48: 400 g, 8000 psi, a relief valve, and 1/8 inch BSPT, with 4.4 from 250 reviews. The tube length is not stated. The Pindex lever at £21.65 states 8000 psi and 400 g, with a 12 inch hose, and 4.0 from 132 reviews, including a coupler that stuck and broke. Who should take which default is on the best grease gun page. You do not need both unless you genuinely have both jobs.

When the answer is neither

A mini pistol is not a small lever. The KRETLAW mini at £20.99 is an 85 g, 3000 psi gun for a few nipples. It opts out of a 400 g cartridge. A cordless gun is not a third column here. The Yofidra at £79.99 and the Seesii at £89.99 are a different budget, for a long round where the pumping is the fatigue. They do not beat a primed pistol under a wheel arch. A higher stated psi does not make a track-adjuster nipple a safe place to experiment.

Common questions

Is a pistol grip easier than a lever?
It is easier when you only have one hand free, under a car, in a wheel arch, or on a trailer drawbar. The lever is easier when both hands are free and you want a longer, braced stroke. Easier without that condition is how people buy the wrong action.
Can I grease a wheel arch with a lever?
You can if there is room for the stroke and you can keep the coupler square. Many people cannot: the second hand holds the arch and the grease runs down the outside. A pistol with a hose is built for that space. The Bravex states an 18 inch hose.
Which gun here is the pistol, and which is the lever?
The default pistol is the Bravex B07BK2ZD4N at £23.99. The default lever is the Draper 47807 at £15.48, which states a 400 g cartridge and 1/8 inch BSPT. The Pindex 10902041A is the other lever, at £21.65, with a lower star average.
Do I need both?
Only if you have both postures in the same month: one-handed work under a vehicle, and open nipples you grease with two hands. If one of those is rare, buy the action you use on the awkward nipple.
Does a lever’s higher stated psi make it safer?
No. The Draper states 8000 psi and the main Bravex states 6000 psi. Both are listing claims. The Health and Safety Executive has found hand guns at pressures that can inject grease through skin. The lever is a volume choice, not a safety upgrade.
Where does a cordless gun fit?
Beside this choice, not inside it. At £79.99 and £89.99 the two cordless guns are for a long grease round, after you already know the cartridge and the coupler. They do not replace a pistol in a wheel arch, and their review samples are much smaller.
