Grease gun coupler stuck

Updated: 21.10.2026

The jaws are on the nipple, the gun is primed, and a straight pull only bends your wrist. A grease gun coupler stuck on the fitting is usually the release, not a seized gun. Tilt and twist a push-on coupler off. If it still will not move, or if grease has broken the skin, stop forcing it. Which gun states a thread, and what the set costs, stays on the [grease gun comparison](/hub/compressors/grease-gun). This page is the fitting: release it, replace leaking jaws, and match the thread before a lock-on. The notes use Draper's removal line and Health and Safety Executive alerts, checked on 19 October 2026.

Get a push-on coupler off without snapping the nipple

Push the coupler on square so the jaws pass the neck. Draper's instructions for the Expert 06827 say tilt, twist, and pull, and never pull straight off. That 06827 is not in this comparison. A straight pull snaps the nipple. Mini Forum replies say the same: pull at an angle, with the gun supported. Wipe dried grease off the collar. If you never bled the gun, prime into a rag first, which is the how to use a grease gun page. UK reviews of the Bravex at £23.99, the Draper 47807, the Pindex lever, and the Anesty already describe a coupler that sticks, breaks, or leaks. Change the coupler. Do not scrap the barrel.

When the grease will not go in, the coupler will not come off

A nipple that will not take grease holds the pressure you just pumped, so the coupler feels welded on. Another stroke only raises that pressure. Stop pumping. Tilt and twist once. If the coupler leaves, clean or replace the nipple. If it does not, do not add a screwdriver or heat. Open the bleed if the gun has one. Grease running down the outside means the jaws are not holding the neck. Sealey-style sheets treat damaged jaws as a part to replace, and they say not to over-tighten a die-cast head. In this set that shows up on the KRETLAW kit and the Anesty. The barrel may be fine.

Match the thread before you buy a lock-on

A quick-release coupler only helps if it screws onto the outlet you have. 1/8 inch BSPT and 1/8 NPT are both called one-eighth, and they are not the same thread. Only the Draper 47807 states 1/8 inch BSPT. A UK review of B07BK2ZD4N describes the outlet as 1/8 NPT, and the spec block does not confirm it. The Bravex at £29.99 puts a quick-release coupler in the title and still does not name the thread. Draper's connector 16156 is a 1/8 inch BSPT example at £28.74 on drapertools.com, not a tested fit on each ASIN. If the listing never names the thread, read the head before you order a coupler. That check sits on the buying guide.

Do not treat a blown nipple as a stuck coupler

A nipple that has come out of a track adjuster, with grease still under pressure, is the incident in the Health and Safety Executive hydraulic injection alert. A fitter died in that situation with a hand grease gun. The track-tensioning bulletin says hand guns have been tested above 600 bar, and not to reuse a blown nipple. Standing in line with the fitting and pulling harder is how that injury happens. It is not a stubborn 4-jaw. Do not feel for the leak with your hands. Grease under the skin is an emergency even when the mark looks small. A tilt that works on a trailer hitch is not a method for a fitting that has already left the housing.

Common questions

How do I get the coupler off the nipple?
Tilt and twist, then pull at an angle, with the gun supported. Draper's sheet forbids a straight pull. If dried grease is holding the jaws, wipe the nipple and try again. If it still will not move, stop and open the bleed if the gun has one.
The coupler leaks around the nipple. Is the gun finished?
Often only the coupler is finished. Jaws that have spread will not hold, and grease runs down the outside while the barrel still pumps. Replace the coupler, and do not over-tighten it into a die-cast head. A leak at the hose thread may be BSPT versus NPT, not worn jaws.
Will a quick-release coupler fit my gun?
Only if the thread matches. The Draper 47807 states 1/8 inch BSPT. A review of one Bravex describes 1/8 NPT, which the spec block does not confirm. Draper's 16156 is a BSPT example at £28.74, not a part fitted to the other guns. Read the outlet before you buy.
Is 1/8 NPT the same as 1/8 BSPT?
No. The names look interchangeable and the threads are not. Forcing one into the other leaks and can crack the head. If the listing does not state the thread, use the marking on the head or the sheet in the box.
Should I pull harder if it is on a track adjuster?
No. A track-adjuster nipple under grease pressure is the case the Health and Safety Executive links to a fatal injection. Do not stand in line with it, and do not reuse a nipple that has blown out. An injury belongs at hospital.
Can I keep using a coupler that has lost its grip?
No. Once the jaws no longer hold, grease stays on the outside and the bearing stays dry. Fit a coupler of the correct thread.
