Grease gun buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

A grease gun buying guide should settle the cartridge, the coupler, and whether you have a free hand before you compare models. You may be at a trailer drawbar, a mower, or a tractor nipple that has not seen grease since last season. The [grease gun comparison](/hub/compressors/grease-gun) holds the amazon.co.uk prices and star ratings. This page is the order of decisions. Figures below are listing claims checked on 19 October 2026. We did not run a lab test.

Start with the space and the cartridge

Count your hands before the psi. One hand on the coupler, the drawbar, or a wheel arch means a pistol. Room for a two-hand stroke means a lever. Cromwell's UK category splits the trade the same way. Air guns are not in this amazon.co.uk set. That test is on the pistol grip versus lever page. Then prefer a listing that states a standard 400 g cartridge, also called 14 oz or about 400 cc. The Draper 47807 states 400 g and bulk fill, at £15.48. The KRETLAW mini at £20.99 is two 85 g cartridges and a stated 3000 psi: a pocket kit, not a weekly tractor gun. Sealey screw cartridges (M33 × 2.5 mm) fit named Sealey guns, not every pistol here. Everyday chassis grease is NLGI 2 unless the machine manual names something else.

Coupler, thread, and a way to bleed air

The fault UK reviews repeat is a coupler that leaks or will not come off. A quick-release sleeve only helps if the outlet thread matches. 1/8 inch BSPT is not 1/8 NPT. Both are called one-eighth, and they do not screw together and seal. Only the Draper 47807 states 1/8 inch BSPT. A UK review of the Bravex pistol describes the outlet as 1/8 NPT, and the spec block does not confirm that. Draper's connector 16156 is 1/8 inch BSPT and is not in this set. A stuck, leaking, or wrong-thread coupler is the grease gun coupler page. Air is the other reason a new gun does not work. Buy a listing that mentions a bleed or relief valve, and do not invent one. The Draper states a relief valve. Several pistols state an air bleeder. An 18 inch hose is stated on several pistols. The Draper does not state the tube length.

What the prices in this set are telling you

Manual guns sit at about £14.90 to £29.99. The cordless pair are £79.99 and £89.99. A household car, caravan, or mower usually stays in the first band. Inside that band you pay for a stated cartridge, a named thread, a hose, and a way to bleed, not for a trophy pressure. About £80 is rational only when dozens of nipples make the pumping itself the job you want to stop. A cordless gun does not fix a wrong cartridge or a mismatched coupler. The Yofidra has 14 reviews and the Seesii has 21. UK 400 g NLGI 2 lithium EP tins seen while this set was assembled ran from about £3 including VAT (Comma) to about £8 (Fuchs Renolit EP2 at Keystation). That is a rule of thumb, not a stock promise.

What not to treat as proof

Stated pressure runs from 3000 psi on the mini to 12000 psi on the cordless guns. Manual claims cluster around 6000 to 8000 psi. None was measured here. The Health and Safety Executive has recorded hand-pumped guns above 600 bar, and a fatal injection when a nipple detached during track tensioning. A higher psi line is not safer. Do not feel for leaks with your hands, and do not stand in line with a track-adjuster nipple. Treat a listed weight of 0.28 g and a 1 × 1 × 1 cm package as data errors. A 4.6 from 5,144 ratings is different evidence from a 4.6 from 14. If grease breaks the skin, that is an emergency. If staff grease work equipment, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 apply: stop the machine, and do not remove a guard to lubricate something that is still moving.

Common questions

Should I buy a pistol or a lever?
Buy the pistol when one hand must stay on the coupler or the vehicle, under a trailer or in a wheel arch. Buy the lever when you have room for a two-hand stroke. In this set the clearest lever with a stated 400 g cartridge is the Draper 47807 at £15.48.
Will a standard 400 g cartridge fit?
Only if the listing says so. The Draper 47807 states 400 g and bulk fill. The KRETLAW mini is an 85 g system. Sealey screw cartridges are a third pattern. The Bravex pistol does not state a cartridge size on this capture, so check the sheet in the box before you rely on a 400 g tin.
When is a cordless gun worth about £80?
When a long round of nipples is the job, and the pumping is what you want to stop. The cordless guns are £79.99 and £89.99. They still need the right cartridge and a coupler that holds. Review counts are 14 and 21, and one Seesii review says the charger was missing.
Are 1/8 BSPT and 1/8 NPT the same?
No. Both get called one-eighth, and they are different threads. The Draper 47807 states 1/8 inch BSPT. A review of one Bravex describes 1/8 NPT, which the spec block does not confirm. A coupler bought for the wrong thread will cross and leak.
Is an 85 g mini enough for a mower?
It is enough for a few nipples on a bike, a garden tool, or a small mower you grease occasionally. The KRETLAW mini at £20.99 includes two 85 g cartridges and states 3000 psi. It is the wrong gun for a weekly tractor round on 400 g cartridges.
