20 m air hose reel buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are standing in a UK garage with a compressor on the wall, and the listing only shouts “20 m”. What decides whether a nailer, a tyre inflator or an impact wrench works is the bore, the coupling, and whether you can pull hose while it stays connected. The kept amazon.co.uk set, checked on 19 October 2026, is the [20 m air hose reel comparison](/hub/compressors/air-hose-reel-20m): the Draper 70838 at £46.68, the INCENDIOS at £109.99, the Goodyear hybrid at £119.99 and the steel Goodyear at £189.99. We compared listings and public UK sources. We did not run a lab test.

Start with length and air, not the logo

A 20 m air hose reel stores about 20 metres of hose sold for compressed air. A garden reel with a spray gun is a different product, and so is a 15 m airline. If the job is one bay plus the front of a drive, 20 m is the band suppliers use once 10–15 m would stop at the door. If you only work inside a single bay, a shorter reel is a different buy. Sealey’s own list, outside Amazon, shows a manual 20 m reel, the SA825 at 6 mm, at £83.94 including VAT, and a controlled-rewind 20 m reel, the SA93 at 10 mm, at £347.94 including VAT. Those prices show the spread. They are not rows in our table.

Bore and the tool at the far end

Inside diameter is the figure the title usually hides. The Hosemaster puts nail guns and tyre inflators on about 6–7 mm, and impact wrenches or spray guns on about 8–10 mm. That is a supplier rule of thumb, not a test of these reels. Over 20 m, the smaller figure has more chance of starving a hungry tool. The three spring reels state 9.5 mm. The Draper 70838 does not state a bore, so you cannot check that band from the page. A Wolf 20 m wall reel at B&Q is listed at 8 mm. If the tool at the bumper is an impact wrench, start from 9.5–10 mm and do not guess from the Draper page.

BSP, PCL and Euro

UK workshop airlines in this set use BSP, not NPT. The Draper and the INCENDIOS state 1/4 inch BSP. Both Goodyear reels state 3/8 inch BSP. PCL and Euro, sometimes sold as XF, are not interchangeable. The Hosemaster gives a PCL through-bore of about 5.5 mm and a Euro through-bore of about 7.2 mm. A PCL male can sit loosely in a Euro female and then separate under load. Draper reviewers report crimped plugs that did not match the Euro or PCL set they already had. If your tools are already PCL, a listing that only says “1/4 inch BSP” is unfinished information.

Rewind, lead-in and the pressure number

A spring reel is for frequent use on a fixed mount. A manual drum is for occasional use. The Draper is freestanding, 4.04 kg, and reviews say the inlet turns with the drum, so you disconnect before you wind. The other three claim a spring and a latch. None of the kept listings states a slow retract. The PCL HRA3L03 quotes a retract of up to 9 seconds, at £166.34 with VAT not confirmed. The Goodyear hybrid includes about 0.9 m of lead-in, the INCENDIOS includes 2 m, and the steel Goodyear includes none. Every kept listing prints 20 bar. Treat that as a maximum. A home compressor often works around 8–10 bar. Under PSSR 2000 the written-scheme rule drops away under 250 bar litres. A 24 litre receiver at 8 bar is 192. A 50 litre receiver at 8 bar is 400. This page is not legal advice. Rewind types are compared on the retractable versus manual page, and fixing is on how to mount an air hose reel.

Common questions

What inside diameter do I need on a 20 m airline?
For nail guns and tyre inflators, UK supplier guidance puts the bore around 6–7 mm. For impact wrenches and spray guns it puts the bore around 8–10 mm. The three spring reels in our comparison state 9.5 mm. The Draper 70838 does not state a bore, so you cannot place it on that scale from the listing. Over 20 m, a bore that is too small is a common reason the tool feels weak at full stretch.
Are PCL and Euro couplings the same if both say 1/4 inch?
No. The 1/4 inch figure is the thread size, often BSP on these UK listings. PCL and Euro are different quick-connect profiles, with through-bores around 5.5 mm and 7.2 mm in the Hosemaster guide. They can look as if they mate and then come apart under pressure. Stay with the profile already on your compressor and tools.
Does 20 bar on the reel mean I set the compressor to 20 bar?
No. The 20 bar or 300 psi line on these listings is a maximum for the hose, not a recommended setpoint. A typical home compressor is regulated nearer 8–10 bar. Running at the printed maximum because the title shows it is a misreading, and it is not a claim that the reel was tested at that pressure in a lab.
Do I need a lead-in hose as well as the 20 m?
Yes, if the reel does not include one. In this set the Goodyear hybrid includes about 0.9 m, the INCENDIOS includes 2 m, and the steel Goodyear includes none. That short hose joins the compressor to the reel inlet. It is not extra reach along the car, and a missing one is a second purchase on the day the reel arrives.
Is a manual reel enough if I only inflate tyres?
It can be, if you accept the chore. The Draper 70838 at £46.68 is a freestanding crank reel, and reviews say you disconnect it before you unwind because the inlet does not swivel. For a monthly tyre check that is tolerable. If the hose must leave the floor every weekend, a spring reel is the type that stays connected while you pull.
What should I ignore in a listing title?
Ignore a brand shout until you have length, bore, coupling and rewind. “20 m” does not state the inside diameter, and “20 bar” does not mean you set the compressor there. Also ignore a garden-hose photo, a 15 m airline, and any safety-standard claim that is not printed on the listing you are buying.
