24 litre compressor for spraying

Updated: 21.10.2026

A tyre that filled from a 24 litre compressor does not tell you the same machine can feed a spray gun with the trigger held down. A 24 litre compressor for spraying is a rate problem: the gun wants air every minute, and two amazon.co.uk listings here print airflow figures that disagree. A small gun with pauses is a plausible use. Continuous full-size panel work is the wrong promise. Prices and review counts are on the [24 litre air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/air-compressor-24l). Review notes come from UK-dated amazon.co.uk reviews. This is not a lab spray test. What the gun asks for

Litres on the tank and CFM at the gun are not the same number. Twenty-four litres is the receiver. If the gun's free-air demand is higher than the compressor's free air delivery, the needle falls and you wait. A tyre inflator can live on that wait. A wet edge on a panel cannot. TEH Tools, not a test of these ASINs, puts touch-up guns around 2–3 CFM, a medium HVLP around 3–5 CFM, and full-size car work around 10–15 CFM. Spray Guns Direct treats a 24 litre machine as a match for low-free-air guns or airbrushes under about 4.5 CFM. Their example, 120 L/min or about 4.2 CFM at 6 bar, is theirs. It is not the Hyundai's.

What these listings actually print

The Hyundai HY7524X has the largest UK review pile here, 4.6 from 1,072 ratings at £149.95. The bullets print 5.2 CFM and 150 L/min. The specification table prints 2.65 CFM. Neither line is labelled free air delivery. You cannot keep the larger number because a round-up quoted the bullets, and you cannot average them. The Hychika, £124.84 with 4.5 from 27 ratings, claims 160 L/min air intake in the bullets and 60 L/min in the table. Intake is not air at the coupler, and 27 ratings do not settle the split. How to read a conflicting CFM line is on the 24 litre air compressor buying guide. The Orazio's 125 L/min, the oil-lubricated Einhell's 165 L/min at £129.95, and the SIP Airmate's 6.4 CFM at £159.00 are unlabelled as free air delivery. Air brushing on the SIP page is a catalogue line beside one UK review, scored 3.0.

What UK reviewers got done

Hyundai reviewers report a small gun keeping up on car panels. Continuous high-volume spraying, including fence panels, ran the pump too hard. About 100 psi, in one review, is already tight for some brad nailers. Hychika reviewers mention furniture painting and a smaller spray gun that one of them said keeps up reasonably well. The same reviews say the machine gets hot, and one unit smoked with a burning smell on the first start. On the oil-lubricated Einhell, a small spray gun worked and an LVLP gun did not. Fence pressure dropped quickly. Orazio reviewers used an airbrush and small paint jobs. One unit failed to reach 2 bar in 8.5 minutes and was returned. Another overheated after about six weeks of airbrush use.

Oil, water, and the connector

Water and oil in the airline mark the paint. Spray Guns Direct and the Hosemaster note say they cause craters, and that a spray gun must not sit downstream of a lubricator. An oil-free pump reduces oil in the line. It does not keep the tank dry. UK reviews still mention tank water, and on the Hyundai and the Orazio they mention manufacturing debris. Drain the receiver before you spray. A water trap is not in the box, and Hyundai reviewers bought the hose separately. A Euro high-flow coupler is the preference over a narrow PCL-style connector. UK reviews of the oil-lubricated Einhell describe a PCL outlet, which restricts flow when the gun is already close to the pump's limit. Whether oil in the pump is acceptable is the oil-free or oil air compressor page.

Common questions

Can I spray a fence with a 24 litre compressor?
You can start one, and you should expect the pump to work hard. A fence is a long trigger time, not a touch-up. Pause when the pressure falls, and stop if the motor smells of burning. One Bimson reviewer sprayed a fence, then found the machine would not start after 12 months and only two uses.
Can I spray a car panel?
What those Hyundai reviews describe is a spot repair with the gun off between passes, not a full-size gun laying a wet coat across a wing. Continuous panel work in this set points to a larger compressor.
What is the difference between the gun's CFM and the tank litres?
The gun's CFM is how much air it uses each minute while the trigger is down. The tank litres are storage. One CFM is about 28.3 L/min as a unit conversion only. Match free air delivery, not the number on the tank.
Which listings do not state airflow at all?
The Bimson Power 24L at £114.99 and the Einhell TE-AC 24 Silent at £169.93 state no airflow, so they stay off a spraying shortlist that depends on air delivery. The Bimson also states no decibel figure. The silent Einhell states 57 dB LpA, which answers noise and leaves the gun unmatched. A blank is not proof the air is enough for HVLP.
Does oil-free matter for paint?
Oil in the airline marks the finish. Six machines here are oil-free. The Einhell TC-AC 190/24/8 is oil-lubricated, and UK reviews describe leaks and oil from the cylinder head. Oil-free does not remove tank water, and it does not put a filter in the box. Drain the receiver before you spray.
What do I do if the pump gets hot halfway through?
Stop and let the motor cool. No listing here states a duty cycle, so about 50 percent is a magazine rule of thumb, not a run time for the Hyundai or the Hychika. If you smell burning, use the retailer's returns route.
