24 litre air compressor buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with a shortlist of corded compressors around 24 litres, and two lines on the same page do not agree. A bullet states one airflow, the table states another, or a title says 24 litres while a later line says 20. A decibel figure sits there with no LpA or LwA. This 24 litre air compressor buying guide is the checklist for that page. It does not name a winner. Shelf prices and review counts for the seven machines, from £114.99 to £169.93, are on the [24 litre air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/air-compressor-24l). Figures come from those amazon.co.uk listings. This is not a lab test.

What a 24 litre listing is selling

A machine in this set is a corded receiver: a small tank, a pump, a regulator, and a lead that only runs from a UK socket if the plug is a BS 1363 13 A type. It is not a cordless tyre inflator, and it is not a petrol site compressor for a place with no mains. The tank stores a few minutes of air. The pump replaces it. The tool only sees what leaves the regulator. Twenty-four litres is the tank, not the airflow. A seller guide puts a brad nailer under 1 CFM and a full-size HVLP gun around 4.6–5.6 CFM, and it says free air delivery has to beat the tool. Those bands are not a test of these seven ASINs. A short tyre burst can live on stored air. A gun that needs several CFM the whole time the trigger is down will empty the tank and then wait. Before you trust 1 hp or a silent title, read four lines in order: what the air figure is called, whether the decibels are labelled, what voltage and plug the page states, and whether the tank litres in the title match the tank line. Once the machine is in the garage, the how to use a 24 litre air compressor page takes over.

Airflow words that change the tool

Free air delivery is the air the tool can use at a stated pressure. Intake, displacement, or an unlabelled CFM can be a larger number measured with no load. One CFM is about 28.3 litres a minute. That conversion is arithmetic, not a measurement of any pump here. On the Hyundai HY7524X the bullets print 5.2 CFM and 150 L/min, and the specification table on the same listing prints 2.65 CFM. Both figures are on one page. Neither is labelled as free air delivery, so you cannot say the gun receives 5.2 CFM. The machine is still 4.6 from 1,072 ratings at £149.95. The Hychika page, at £124.84 with 4.5 from 27 ratings, does the same thing. The bullets claim 160 L/min air intake and 68 dB. The table says 60 L/min and 62 dB. Intake is not the air at the gun, and 160 against 60 is not a range you average. The SIP Airmate V215/25 lists 6.4 CFM at £159.00 and does not say whether that is free air or displacement. One UK review, scored 3.0, does not settle it. The Bimson Power listing at £114.99 states no airflow at all, and neither does the Einhell TE-AC 24 Silent at £169.93. A missing CFM is not a quiet way of saying the air is enough. Gun demand sits on the 24 litre compressor for spraying page.

Noise, plug, and the real tank

A bare decibel number is not a hearing assessment. The Control of Noise at Work Regulations set action values at 80, 85, and 87 dB(A) for workers. Those are workplace duties, not a brochure score for a Sunday garage. A 97 dB listing is still a reason to wear hearing protection on a long run, because the number is high even when that workplace law does not apply to your shed. Only the Einhell TE-AC 24 Silent states noise as 57 dB LpA. That is the clearest label in the set, at the highest price, £169.93, with 4.4 from 481 ratings, many of which are not in English. The same page gives no airflow. The title says 240 V and the table says 220 V. The oil-lubricated Einhell TC-AC 190/24/8 is listed at 97 dB and £129.95, with 4.1 from 251 ratings. UK reviews describe a continental two-pin plug. A two-pin lead does not run from a UK socket as it arrives. If you cannot fit a BS 1363 plug yourself, that is an electrician’s job. The oil-free SIP is also listed at 97 dB, so oil-free is not a synonym for quiet. The Orazio prints 65 dB with no LpA or LwA. The Hyundai prints 60 dB the same way. The Bimson prints no decibel figure. The Orazio 241184 title says 24 litres. The bullets and the tank-volume line say 20 litres. Maximum pressure is 700 kPa, which is 7 bar, and the voltage line is 220 V. At £129.99 with 4.4 from 334 ratings it is mid-price, and it is not a confirmed 24 litre tank at 8 bar. If the title and the tank line disagree, plan around the smaller stated tank until the seller corrects the page. Lubrication is a separate decision on the oil-free or oil air compressor page.

What this size will not promise

None of these listings states a duty cycle. A magazine rule of thumb of about 50 percent for direct-drive oil-free pumps is not a specification of the Hyundai, the Bimson, or the Einhell. If the page is silent, the page is silent. You cannot turn that sentence into a permitted run time. Under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, Schedule 1, a written-scheme exception sits around 250 bar litres for some mobile receivers. Eight bar times 24 litres is 192 bar litres, which is under that figure. That arithmetic does not mean a home garage has no duties, and it does not mean a workplace can skip a written scheme without checking the equipment. HSE compressed-air guidance still expects a receiver to have a drain, a gauge, and a safety valve that can pass the air the compressor supplies. You do not turn the safety valve up to chase pressure.

Common questions

What should I read before the horsepower line?
Read the airflow wording, the noise label, the voltage and plug, and the tank volume in both the title and the specification table. Horsepower and a silent title do not say what air the tool receives or whether the lead is a UK 13 A plug. On this set the Hyundai and the Hychika each print two airflow figures, and the Orazio title does not match its tank line.
Why can one page show two CFM figures?
Sellers sometimes put one airflow in the bullets and a different figure in the specification table. On the Hyundai HY7524X both are on the same amazon.co.uk listing: 5.2 CFM and 150 L/min in the bullets, 2.65 CFM in the table. Neither is labelled free air delivery. The Hychika bullets say 160 L/min intake and the table says 60 L/min. Do not average them, and do not keep the larger one because a round-up quoted it.
Is 24 litres the airflow?
No. Litres here are the receiver, the tank that stores air. Airflow is the rate, in CFM or litres per minute, and it needs a label such as free air delivery if you are matching a gun. One CFM is about 28.3 L/min as arithmetic only. A 24 litre tank can still be a poor match for a gun that needs several CFM continuously.
Does a 97 dB listing mean I need defenders at home?
The 80, 85, and 87 dB(A) figures in the Noise Regulations are duties for employers, not a home-garage penalty. A machine listed at 97 dB, which is both the oil-lubricated Einhell and the SIP in this set, is still loud enough that hearing protection is a sensible choice for a long run. Only the Einhell TE-AC 24 Silent states 57 dB as LpA. A bare 60 dB or 65 dB line is not the same kind of label.
Will a two-pin plug run as it arrives?
No. UK mains sockets take a BS 1363 plug. UK reviews of the Einhell TC-AC 190/24/8 describe a continental two-pin lead. You either fit a correct 13 A plug, if you are competent to do that, or you ask an electrician. A two-pin lead is a buying problem, not a detail to fix after the first start.
Which machines state no airflow at all?
The Bimson Power 24L at £114.99 states neither airflow nor a decibel figure. The Einhell TE-AC 24 Silent at £169.93 states 57 dB LpA and states no airflow. The Hyundai and the Hychika contradict themselves, and the SIP’s 6.4 CFM and the Orazio’s 125 L/min are not labelled as free air delivery. A blank is a different fault from a contradiction.
Do I need a written scheme for a home garage?
A written scheme under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations is for qualifying work equipment, not an automatic appointment for every householder who inflates a tyre. Eight bar on a 24 litre receiver is about 192 bar litres, under the 250 bar litre line in Schedule 1. That does not cancel the practical need for a drain, a gauge, and a safety valve you leave alone.
