50 litre air compressor buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are standing in a UK garage with a nailer, a blow gun or a small spray gun, and a 50 litre air compressor looks like the obvious next buy. The tank size is easy to see. The airflow number on the title is not. This 50 litre air compressor buying guide puts free air delivery first, then pressure, the 13 A supply and the duty the maker actually admits. The [50 L air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/50l-air-compressor) lines up the four amazon.co.uk listings kept on 19 October 2026, from £195.99 to £263.98. We checked those listings. We did not run a lab test.

Free air delivery, not the tank

Match the tool to free air delivery at the pressure you will actually use. Displacement, suction and aspirated litres per minute are the larger theoretical figure. They describe air the pump tries to pull in, not the air that leaves the regulator once the tank is at working pressure. Once a model already publishes free air delivery, use that figure. Einhell’s UK page for article 4010393 lists suction of 240 L/min and output of 76 L/min at 7 bar. The amazon.co.uk listing for the same article still prints 240 L/min and does not say which quantity that is. Seventy-six litres per minute is about 2.7 cubic feet per minute. If you size a spray gun against 240 L/min, the gun will starve as soon as the tank pressure falls and the pump has to keep up.

What each listing actually labels

The SIP vertical listing is the only kept Amazon page that separates the two numbers: 9.6 CFM displacement and 4.7 CFM free air delivery at 8 bar, about 133 L/min. ABAC prints 220 L/min and labels it aspirated, and it does not publish free air delivery. The horizontal SIP prints 9.6 CFM and does not say whether that is displacement or free air delivery. A trade page for that part number does state a free-air figure. That figure is not in the Amazon row, so do not treat the Amazon 9.6 CFM as the air a tool receives.

Pressure, plug and duty

Einhell and ABAC are listed at 10 bar. Both SIP models are listed at 8 bar. Most nailers and blow guns want about 4–7 bar at the regulator, so 8 bar is enough for that work if free air delivery keeps up. A higher maximum stores more energy in the same tank. It does not, by itself, put more air through the tool. Fifty litres at 8 bar is 400 bar litres. Fifty litres at 10 bar is 500. Both sit above the 250 bar litre line in the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. That line matters at work, not as a reason to prefer 8 bar for a nailer at home. UK mains are 230 V, and a normal socket expects a BS 1363 13 A plug. The SIP vertical listing includes a 1.3 m cable with a 13 A plug and a maximum current of 13 A. ABAC includes a Type G adaptor, not a moulded plug. Einhell states 230 V AC and 1,500 W, and the table does not state the plug. Start-up current on a machine of about 1,500 W can trip a breaker. SGS Engineering says to use a longer air hose rather than a long extension lead. If the breaker is the problem, that is an electrician’s job. Duty is the limit people skip. Einhell UK declares S3 25% for this article. That is a manufacturer duty class, not a stopwatch we timed. ABAC’s bullets say occasional or intermittent use. The SIP pages used here state no duty percentage. If the day is continuous workshop hours, this oil-free set is the wrong class, which is the point of the oil-free versus oil page.

Noise and a written scheme

Noise is a buying flag, not a number you can rank from the titles. Amazon prints 95 dB for the Einhell and 97 dB for the ABAC. Einhell UK prints 77 dB(A) sound pressure for the same article. Both SIP listings print 62 dB without saying sound pressure, sound power or distance. If the garage shares a wall, use the quiet 50 litre air compressor page before you treat 62 dB as a promise. A written scheme is a work question. Private DIY sits outside regulation 3 of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. Self-employed use is in. At or above 250 bar litres, work use needs a written scheme and examination by a competent person. Northern Ireland should be checked with HSENI.

Stay in the set or leave it

Stay if you want intermittent garage air, you can read free air delivery rather than the headline litres, and you can live with the plug and noise each listing actually states. Leave if you need all-day duty, a spray gun that stays above about 5 CFM, or a neighbour-critical machine in the £299–£360 band. Who each of the four listings is for is on the best 50L air compressor page.

Common questions

What airflow number should I match to the tool?
Match free air delivery at the tool’s working pressure, not suction or a bare CFM with no label. If the page does not name the quantity, do not size the tool to the larger number.
Is a 50 L tank enough for a nailer, and for a spray gun?
Fifty litres is a useful buffer for a nailer, a tyre or a blow gun, because those tools pause and let the tank recover. It is not enough, on its own, for a spray gun or sander whose demand stays above the pump’s free air delivery. Many spray guns sit around 8–14 CFM, above the 4.7 CFM the vertical SIP states.
Do I need 8 bar or 10 bar?
Most nailers and blow guns want about 4–7 bar at the regulator, so a listed 8 bar maximum can be enough. The extra bar on the Einhell and ABAC stores more energy in the receiver. It does not replace a free-air figure.
Will it run from a normal 13 A socket?
These are 230 V machines around 1,500 W, and a UK socket is 13 A. Only the SIP vertical listing includes a 13 A plug in the box. Start-up can trip a breaker. Use a longer air hose instead of a long extension lead, and call an electrician if you are tempted to alter the consumer unit.
What does S3 25% mean for how long it can run?
S3 25% is the duty class Einhell UK prints for this article. It marks the pump as intermittent. It is not a minute count we measured. If you need the motor on for long continuous spells, look outside this oil-free set.
Does a home compressor need a written scheme?
A private DIY user is outside regulation 3 of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, so a written scheme is not a household requirement. Self-employed use is in scope. These receivers are over 250 bar litres, so work use needs a written scheme and a competent-person examination. A bigger tank is the next step only when the tool already sits inside the pump’s free air delivery.
