Fur lined safety boots vs CI

Updated: 16 October 2026

A listing that says fur lined, or waterproof, has not shown you the cold mark. Fur lined safety boots vs CI splits a lining you can feel from a code on the tongue, and waterproof in a title is not WR. None of the seven amazon.co.uk listings checked on 15 October 2026 states CI or WR. This page does not pick a winner. The comparison is [winter safety shoes](/hub/burglar-protection/winter-safety-shoes). We did not lab-test these boots. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What fur does, and what CI is

Faux fur or fleece is a lining. On KOIFISH, B0FJRPTY9H at £23.99, the title says winter and fur lined, not a steel toe. On NACKINg's B0DCNXM28Z at £39.88 the title adds waterproof and a steel toe. That lining can make a yard more comfortable. It is not a code. CI is additional to EN ISO 20345. Where footwear claims that standard, the toecap is 200 joules and 15 kN. CI is marked only after the cold test. Fur lining (CI) as one feature glues two different things. Portwest FW05, outside this set, prints fur and EN ISO 20345:2011 S3 CI. On 15 October 2026 it was about £26.87 to £36.34. We have not tested it. If the paperwork says CI, a lining without the letters does not answer it.

The -17°C test is a drop limit

SATRA's basic CI test is a cabinet. The sample is conditioned at 23°C, then held at -17°C for 30 minutes. The upper surface of the insole may fall by no more than 10°C. The pass is that drop. It is not an insole that stays at 10°C, and it is not feet that stay at 10°C. The same simple test does not tell a chilled room from a walk-in freezer. Dunlop's -20°C line is the maker's claim, not the basic CI result. None of the seven states CI. Warmth on a 12-hour shift is one person's day, not 30 minutes at -17°C. A thicker sock, on the how to wear page, does not add the letters.

Waterproof words, WPA, and WR

uvex separates the words from the codes. WPA, which replaced WRU, tests the upper. WR tests the whole shoe. From 2022, S7 means an S3-type boot plus WR. None of these seven prints WPA, WR, or S7. On B0DCNXM28Z, some of the 35 stored UK reviews describe dry feet, and others report leaks or tears within about a month. On B0DFH6G52S at £42.88, one of 11 UK texts reports a leak in under three months. Bawalon at £32.90 says water resistant, and that is still not WR. From 2022, basic slip has no letters and SR is the glycerol test. SRC is the old mark. FO is oil resistance, not grip. Water over the ankle is on the site work page.

How to read an unmarked winter listing

Read the tongue before the stars. On 15 October 2026 none of the kept URLs stated CI or WR. Stars record whether people liked the pair. They do not record the cabinet or the whole-shoe water test. B0BJPT214J at £42.99 says fur and waterproof, and one review says a nail went through the sole. Fur does not imply a midsole. Use FW05 as the marked pattern, not as a rank here. It prints S3 CI and it has fur. These seven print a winter word or a water word and do not print the codes. For a yard or a dog walk, when nobody has asked for CI, a fur lining is a reasonable private choice. If the site names CI, WR, or S7, you need those letters.

Common questions

Is a fur lining the same as CI?
No. Fur is a lining. CI is an optional code after a cold test. None of the seven listings states CI. KOIFISH at £23.99 says fur lined and does not say steel toe. A warm review is not the mark.
What does the CI test actually measure?
SATRA describes a sample conditioned at 23°C, then held at -17°C for 30 minutes. The insole surface may fall by no more than 10°C. Passing footwear may be marked CI. That is a drop limit, not how warm your feet feel.
Can you treat -17°C as the temperature your feet will feel?
No. -17°C is the cabinet temperature, not a comfort setting. The pass is a fall of no more than 10°C, not an insole held at 10°C. SATRA says this simple test does not separate a chilled room from a freezer. Do not read CI as warm down to -17°C.
Why do some adverts show a much lower figure, such as -20°C?
A -20°C line is the maker's claim. Dunlop's figure is that kind of claim, not the basic CI drop test. Do not copy it onto a listing that does not print CI, and do not treat it as a tougher pass of the same method.
Does waterproof on an amazon.co.uk title mean WR?
No. WR is the whole-shoe mark. The NACKINg titles say waterproof and do not print WR. Stored UK reviews include dry feet and leaks within a month or under three months. WPA, the upper test, is already not a dry-all-day promise.
What is the difference between WPA and WR, and where does S7 sit?
WPA, which replaced WRU, tests the upper. WR tests the whole shoe. From 2022, S7 means an S3-type boot plus WR. None of the seven prints those codes. Bawalon's water resistant is milder wording, and it is still not WPA or WR.
When is fur reasonable, and when do you need the letters on the tongue?
Fur is reasonable for a yard or a walk when no assessment has asked for CI. You need the letters when cold is assessed or the contract names CI. Live with a waterproof title only as wording, and ask for WR or S7 when the specification names them. Stars do not close either gap.
