Metal shelving buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a tape measure, a garage or a utility cupboard, and a search page where a boltless bay, a wire rack and a stainless flap are all called a metal shelf. This metal shelving buying guide is the step before the [metal shelf comparison](/hub/workshop/metal-shelf): choose the type, read the evenly distributed load, and check the depth against the door. Prices below are amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission. A 4.6 from about 169,000 ratings is a different kind of evidence from 5.0 from one rating, and neither figure tells you whether the deck is a board or a mesh.

What you are actually buying

A boltless bay uses beams that clip into slotted uprights and a board, often MDF. The Shopfitting Shop title size is 1,800 × 900 × 400 mm. SONGMICS GLR040E02 is the same footprint per bay, and the £42.99 price is for a pair, not one. DIVCHI prints an item weight of 200 g, which is not a plausible bay, so treat that material line as a conflict, not a verified specification. A wire unit has no board. Amazon Basics, at £44.99, is 35.5 cm deep, with levelling feet and a style name that says without wheels. TAIMIKO, at £94, is two wall plates at 50 kg a layer. It will not stand on a garage floor. Flat deck against open mesh is on boltless or wire shelving.

How to read the kilogram claim

Read three numbers, not the largest one in the title: load per shelf, load for the whole bay, and whether that weight is spread across the deck. On the cheap boltless cluster, 175 kg per shelf and 875 kg for the unit are five shelves at 175 kg written twice. Do not add 875 kg on top of 175 kg. SUPEER’s bullets say 200 kg per shelf and 1,000 kg, and a different line says 600 kg. When two capacity cells disagree, you do not have a single figure you can trust. Amazon Basics bullets say 160 kg per shelf and 800 kg total, while the title also prints 680 kg. Himimi states 350 kg for the unit and no per-shelf kilogram. VANZBON and Forthcan print pounds, and Mapleyard’s higher figure applies only when the rack is stationary.

Depth, door width and damp

A 400 mm bay is the usual garage depth, and a 900 mm width has to clear the door. SONGMICS, the Shopfitting Shop, REQUISITE NEEDS and SUPEER print a door width around 90 cm. Forthcan’s field is 140 cm. Measure the door leaf. The room itself is on metal shelf for a garage. Wire at about 350 mm deep suits a cupboard, and you give up the flat board. Loose screws and small tins fall through open mesh unless you add a tray. Azil, selling a bay of this size, says untreated MDF should be varnished if the room is damp, cold or humid. In an unheated UK shed, wire drains and bare MDF swells.

A simple way to decide

If the job is paint, tool cases and boxes, start with a 400 mm boltless bay and read 175 kg as an evenly distributed shelf claim. The pair at £42.99 is two of those bays. If the job is a cupboard or a gap you must roll out, start with wire. Amazon Basics is the feet-only rack with the large sample. Himimi and VANZBON list lockable wheels. A wipe-clean kitchen or food-trailer flap is the wall shelf at 50 kg a layer, not a five-tier bay. Stop if the rack will be work equipment. PUWER 1998 applies when people use it for work. A consumer bay here is not SEMA-approved. If a vehicle can strike the uprights, get a competent person rather than a mallet. Assembly sits on how to assemble metal shelving.

Common questions

How much weight can a garage shelf hold?
In this set the common boltless claim is 175 kg per shelf, evenly distributed, and 875 kg for five shelves added together. SUPEER’s bullets say 200 kg per shelf and also print a 600 kg line. None of those figures is a lab result from this comparison. A 20 kg vice in the middle of a thin board is a different job from boxes spread across the deck.
Is 875 kg the load on every shelf?
No. On these listings 875 kg is the bay total, usually five times 175 kg. Putting 875 kg on one shelf is not what the seller wrote. If the board is already sagging, the printed total does not bring it back.
Should I buy wire if the shed is damp?
Wire drains and has no MDF to swell, which helps an unheated shed, though small parts fall through and chrome can still show surface rust. A board bay needs the MDF sealed if the air is damp. UK sellers of this size, including Azil, say untreated board should be varnished in a cold or humid room.
When is a folding wall shelf the wrong product?
When you wanted a freestanding bay. TAIMIKO is two wall plates at 50 kg a layer, not five tiers at 175 kg. It is also the wrong product if you cannot identify the wall you must fix into, or if a previous delivery of the same type arrived with a fixed bracket and no hinge.
Will a 900 mm bay fit through the door?
Often only if the leaf is clear. Several bays here print a door width of about 90 cm. Count the frame and anything stored beside the opening. If the built bay will not turn the corner, assemble it where it will stand.
