Boltless or wire shelving

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at two metal shelves that solve different jobs. One is a boltless bay with a flat board. The other is an open wire rack on poles. This page is only that choice. The wider criteria sit on the [metal shelving buying guide](/hub/workshop/metal-shelf/sub/metal-shelf-buying-guide), and the product table sits on the [metal shelf comparison](/hub/workshop/metal-shelf). Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission. Choose boltless for a flat deck. Choose wire for airflow, a narrower footprint, or wheels. A folding wall shelf is not a vote in this comparison.

Two different decks

A boltless deck in this set is a board, usually MDF, on steel beams that clip into slotted uprights. SONGMICS uses yellow MDF on a galvanised frame. The Shopfitting Shop names MDF and a shelf-thickness field of 5 mm, which matches what reviewers describe. The flat surface is the point: a tin stays put, and a small box does not fall through. A wire deck is open mesh. Air moves through it, which is why a pantry or a damp shed can dry off instead of trapping water on a board. The same gaps drop screws and rawlplugs. Amazon Basics adds guardrails. They stop a box sliding off. They do not turn the mesh into a tray. Assembly of either deck is on how to assemble metal shelving.

Load and price in this set

Do not crown a winner on the biggest number. The boltless cluster mostly prints 175 kg per shelf and 875 kg for the bay. That 875 kg is five shelves, not a single deck. The kilogram line is the seller’s evenly distributed claim. Wire is not automatically weaker. Amazon Basics bullets say 160 kg per shelf and 800 kg total, at £44.99, with 4.6 from 169,497 reviews. Himimi states 350 kg for the whole unit, at £75.99, and does not print a per-shelf kilogram. A 350 kg unit total can be less per shelf than 160 kg. VANZBON prints 240 lb per shelf. Mapleyard’s 567 kg applies when the rack is stationary. The SONGMICS pair is two boards for £42.99.

Damp, rust and wheels

In a damp UK shed the board fails first if you leave it bare. Azil tells buyers of a 1,800 × 900 × 400 mm bay to varnish untreated MDF when the room is damp, cold or humid. A galvanised or powder-coated frame slows rust. It does not make MDF waterproof. Wire drains, and it still rusts. Amazon Basics reviews mention surface rust often enough that chrome is a finish, not a promise. Wheels exist only when the listing includes them. Amazon Basics here is feet only. Himimi includes four lockable castors and four feet. A castor pulls a modest load out of a cupboard. Lock the castors before you load the rack. Feet and a flat board are the calmer setup on a garage slab, which is metal shelf for a garage.

When to pick which

Pick boltless if you are storing boxes, paint and tool cases on a flat deck about 400 mm deep, and you will read 175 kg as a spread load rather than a point load in the middle of a 5 mm board. The SONGMICS pair is the shortlist when you need two bays and you will fit the anti-tip kit. Pick wire if the rack lives in a cupboard you must roll out, or if the shed is damp and you would rather lose the flat deck than nurse untreated MDF. Amazon Basics is the pick when it stays on its feet and you want the large review record. Himimi is the pick when the castors are the reason you are buying. Neither type is a step, and neither is warehouse racking.

Common questions

Which is stronger, boltless or wire?
Neither, as a type. In this set the common boltless claim is 175 kg per shelf, evenly distributed. Amazon Basics states 160 kg per shelf. Himimi states 350 kg for the whole unit. Compare the sentence, not the biggest integer, and remember the cheap boltless reviews describe flex during assembly.
Which is better in a damp shed?
Wire, if you can accept mesh and possible surface rust, because there is no MDF to swell. A boltless bay is reasonable if you seal the boards. Leaving bare MDF in an unheated shed is the failure UK sellers of this size already warn about.
Can I put loose screws on wire?
They fall through. Guardrails stop a box sliding off. They do not close the mesh. Use bins, or use the flat board on a boltless bay for hardware. Wire is the better deck for baskets, linen and things that need air.
Which one has wheels?
Himimi and VANZBON list lockable wheels in this set. Amazon Basics is sold here without wheels. Mapleyard’s title says wheels, on a sample of 15 ratings. Boltless bays in this comparison are feet, not castors. A high load that the listing limits to a stationary rack does not travel with the wheels.
Is chrome wire rust proof?
No. Chrome is a finish. Amazon Basics reviews include surface rust even though the score is 4.6 from 169,497 reviews. Powder coat and galvanising slow rust on a frame. They are not a guarantee in a wet shed.
Why is boltless cheaper?
The £21–£33 bays are one frame and thin board, with review themes about flex and about 4–5 mm decks. The £42.99 SONGMICS price is two bays. The £44.99 Amazon Basics price buys a single wire unit with a much larger review count, not a second bay. Cheaper here is fewer bays or a thinner deck, not a secret heavier steel.
