HGR20 vs SBR20

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing one axis, and both titles contain 20, so they look like the same duty. HGR20 vs SBR20 is a profile rail against a supported round shaft. The profile block is meant to resist a moment. The open bearing can rotate around the shaft. Use the profile rail when a cutter tries to twist the carriage. Use the supported shaft for a sled, or to replace an SBR axis you already have. The [linear guide comparison](/hub/workshop/linear-guide) has the kit prices. Figures are amazon.co.uk shelf prices from 19 October 2026, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Same number, different rail

An HGR20 rail is a square profile with ground raceways and a carriage that wraps the rail. The block code you want to see is HGH20CA: a square, top-mounted carriage in the heavy-load length. It does not spin around the rail. In this set the GooEquip pair is two 700 mm rails and four of those blocks at £41.05, with no motor. None of those listings states a HIWIN accuracy class. A similar name is not a HIWIN part. An SBR20 rail is a 20 mm round shaft on a continuous aluminium support, with an SBR20UU open linear bearing. The CNCMANS set is two 800 mm shafts and four of those blocks at £43.33. The support limits sag. The bearing is still a bushing on a cylinder, so a loosely mounted block can try to rotate. A profile carriage refuses that rotation because the balls sit on angled raceways. HIWIN's HG geometry uses four rows of balls at 45 degrees. That does not certify the £41 clone. Miniature rails and stages are a different decision, on the linear guide buying guide.

Load and moment, as catalogues state them

Published geometries are far apart, and the amazon.co.uk box does not include the test. On CNC4YOU's drawing for their own SBR blocks, an SBR20UU is about 860 N dynamic and 1,370 N static. Dold's sheet for the HGH20CA shape prints about 17.75 kN dynamic and 27.76 kN static. That is the order of twenty times the SBR20UU dynamic figure, for the catalogue geometry, not for the kit in your basket. This page has no measurement of these ASINs. A router bit offset to one side is asking for a moment. Do not divide a payload by four when the load is offset, because the near blocks take it. Two SBR shafts can be a decent sled. They remain a poor substitute for a profile pair if the cutter is twisting one carriage.

When the supported shaft is the one to buy

Buy the SBR20, or the SBR16 if you will inspect the races, when the moving part is a router sled on a wooden frame. That is what the UK reviews on the CNCMANS listings describe. The SBR20 average is 4.7 from 40 reviews. The SBR16 is 4.1 from 36, with reports of a ball race that broke or was missing. Blocks arrive gritty until they are oiled. Sight the shaft. A slab sled can live with it. A twisted beam still bends both families. The profile rail will bind if you force it onto a hump. The round shaft will rock. Dust and extraction sit on the linear rail for a CNC router page. Oil does not turn an SBR into an HGR.

A conditional choice

For a new axis that has to hold a cutter against a twisting load, choose HGR, then check the steel yourself. The £41.05 GooEquip HGR20 set has almost no review text. The iMetrx 4.9 is eight reviews of a 200 mm rail, shared by the 600 mm and 800 mm titles. For a sled, or for a second shaft beside one you already run, choose SBR. The SBR20 at £43.33 is the better of the two shaft listings on stars and on the size of the review set. The SBR16 is the one to open if £34.33 is the budget and a failed race would only cost you an afternoon. Which star line is shared across lengths is set out on the best linear guide rail page. If the carriage can rotate around the rail, you bought the shaft.

Common questions

Can a round shaft resist a cutter trying to twist the carriage?
Poorly, compared with a profile block. An SBR20UU is an open bushing on a 20 mm shaft, so the carriage can rotate around the rod. An HGH20CA wraps a square rail and is built to take that moment. Two spaced SBR shafts share the load better than one. They are still the sled arrangement, not a substitute certificate for a gantry.
Are the catalogue kilonewtons the rating of the amazon.co.uk kit?
No. The 17.75 kN figure is from a datasheet for the HGH20CA geometry. The 860 N figure is from CNC4YOU's drawing for their SBR20UU. The GooEquip, iMetrx, and CNCMANS listings in this set do not print those tests. Use the gap as a scale, then derate a no-name rail rather than cutting to the catalogue number.
When is SBR the better buy?
When you are building a router sled or replacing the supported shafts on a machine that already uses them, and you will oil the blocks and sight the rail for twist. The CNCMANS SBR20 at £43.33 has the stronger review pattern of the two. It is the worse buy when the spindle hangs off the carriage and the cut tries to rotate it.
Does HGR need a flatter mounting face?
Yes. A profile rail binds if you pull it down onto a hump, because the carriage cannot rock the way an open bushing can. Set one rail as the datum and align the second to it. A round shaft hides a little misalignment as play, which is a different fault, not a free pass for a twisted beam.
Is HGR15 enough, or do I jump to HGR20?
HGR15 is the smaller profile, and hobby builds often treat it as a floor when the frame is the weak part. HGR20 is the common step up when the cutter and the span grow. In this set the HGR15 pair is £48.05 with two reviews, and the cheapest HGR20 pair is £41.05 with no descriptive review. Pick the geometry for the load, then judge the listing on its own text.
