How to use a dust extractor

Updated: 2026-10-21

You have the hose in one hand and a mitre saw or a sander in the other, and the bin is still empty from last weekend. How to use a dust extractor starts before the switch: the right supply, a hose that stays on the port, and a filter that can still move air. Most of the dust on the bench gets there because one of those three was skipped. This is a sequence, not a ranking. The [Holzmann dust extractor comparison](/hub/workshop/holzmann-dust-extractor) holds the prices. Products Compared did not test these machines in a lab. Before you switch on

Confirm the voltage against the socket. The Trend T32 240 V uses a normal UK supply. The 110 V Trend will not run from a 13 A wall socket. The Evolution is corded. Ignore its 15 V cell. The KATSU listings do not state voltage. The Trend box includes a HEPA cartridge and a micro-filter bag. The Evolution listing says bagless, and reviewers add a bag because the cartridge blocks. Push the hose on and try to pull it off. Evolution reviewers put that hose at about 32 mm outside, against ports around 35 mm or 39 mm. The KATSU 55 litre includes 31 to 85 mm adaptors, and a review says the jubilee clips slip. Class and supply are in the dust extractor buying guide.

Running it with a tool

Start the extractor before the cut, and keep it running for a few seconds after the tool stops so the hose clears. The Evolution is the only kept listing with a power take-off. The Trend listing does not mention one, so the saw and the extractor need two plugs. Trend reviewers say the hose crimps, and a bend behind the port kills the flow while the motor still sounds busy. Use the blower only on a surface you are about to capture again. Blowing MDF dust puts it back in the air. If the tool is a planer, the chip extractor or dust extractor page separates those jobs.

When suction falls

Suction falls because of a full bag, a caked cartridge, a hose that has come off, or a clip that has undone. On the Trend, the extraction-velocity LED signals a blockage or a full bag, and there is a filter-cleaning button. Treat a red light as a stop, then check the bag and the hose. On the Evolution, a cartridge that blocks blows dust back out unless a bag is fitted. If the exhaust is dusting your hands, stop. On the KATSU 55 litre, a slipped jubilee clip is an open joint, not a weak motor.

Emptying without a cloud

Empty outside the breathing zone, until the dust is in a bag you can close. HSE tells woodworking workplaces to clean with a class M industrial vacuum, not a broom and not an airline. Close the bag and wipe the seal so the lid still shuts. At work, local exhaust used as LEV is thoroughly examined at least every 14 months. If people are employed, if you do not know what was previously cut, or if a fixed duct needs a designed airflow, stop and get a competent person. Masks and limits are on the wood dust extraction page.

Common questions

What do I check before the first cut?
Check the supply against the rating plate, seat the bag or cartridge, and pull-test the hose on the tool port. The 110 V Trend will not run from a 13 A socket. The Evolution hose often needs an adaptor for 35 mm or 39 mm ports. A KATSU jubilee clip that will not stay done up leaks before the filter ever sees the dust.
Which listing has a power take-off?
The Evolution R15VAC is the only one of the five that lists a power take-off, so the vacuum can start with the tool. The Trend pages do not state one. Plug the tool and the extractor separately on a Trend, and do not overload a single extension lead because both motors are on it.
What do I do when suction falls?
Stop the cut. On a Trend, read the velocity LED and use the filter-clean button, then check the bag and the hose for a crimp. On an Evolution, fit a bag if the cartridge is blocking and dust is coming out of the exhaust. On the KATSU 55 litre, check the clips before you blame the motor.
How do I empty a bag without making a cloud?
Close or seal the dust before you tip it, and do it where you are not breathing the fallout. Do not shake the bag in the workshop and do not sweep the residue. HSE’s clean-up route for wood dust at work is a class M industrial vacuum. A broom puts the dust back in the air you just paid to capture.
Why will the hose not stay on the tool?
The diameters do not match, or the clip has slipped. Evolution reviewers describe about 32 mm outside and 25.5 mm inside. Many tool ports are nearer 35 mm or 39 mm. The KATSU 55 litre ships 31, 35, 39, 63 and 85 mm adaptors, and a review says the jubilee clips need replacing. A dust spout adaptor is in the Trend kit.
What does a red airflow light mean?
On the Trend listings the extraction-velocity LED is there for blockages and a full bag. One UK review says the indicator stuck towards red. Treat that as a clogged filter, a full bag, or a crushed hose, and stop. It is not a brightness setting, and it is not proof that the room meets an exposure limit.
