Heavy duty rack buying guide

Updated: 2026-10-21

You have a garage wall, a pile of boxes, and a row of amazon.co.uk titles that all say heavy duty. This heavy duty rack buying guide is the order to use before you pick a row on the [heavy duty rack comparison](/hub/workshop/heavy-duty-rack): measure the door, read the per-shelf line, then choose a deck. The ten captured bays run from a DIVCHI boltless rack at £21.29 to a 140 cm Forthcan wire rack at £129.99, read on 19 October 2026 by the Products Compared editorial team. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. None of these figures is a lab result.

Read the load as three different numbers

The kilogram in the title is usually a per-shelf claim, not the weight of everything you own and not a tested safe working load. On the boltless bays the repeated line is 175 kg per shelf and 875 kg for the unit. Five times 175 is 875, so that second number is one bay’s arithmetic if every shelf is loaded to the stated figure at once. It is not a doubled total for a two-bay pack. REQUISITE NEEDS writes 175 kg evenly distributed. A vice in one corner is not that load. SUPEER prints 200 kg per shelf and 1,000 kg for five shelves, while another field says 600 kg. Those cells disagree. Mapleyard states 114 kg per shelf and 567 kg standing. The wheeled Forthcan states 1,100 lb with the feet and 550 lb while moving. The 115 cm Forthcan prints 907 kg as both maximum and minimum, with no per-shelf split. The 140 cm Forthcan states 640 lb per shelf and 3,200 lb total. None of these listings names a test method. Consumer Rights Act 2015 section 11 makes the printed description part of the contract.

Fit the bay through the door

A rack that will not pass the door never becomes storage. SUPEER and the 90 cm boltless bays need 90 cm. The 115 cm Forthcan prints 115 cm. The 140 cm Forthcan prints 140 cm, wider than many UK internal doors and awkward if you try to carry a built bay through a garage leaf. Depth is mostly 40 cm, or about 45 cm on the Forthcan wire bays. Forty centimetres takes paint tins and stacker boxes. It will not take a deep crate the long way, and nothing captured here is a 60 cm trade bay. Height is about 180 cm, or 193 cm on the Mapleyard bullets, so check the joists before you count on the top shelf. If the opening is under 90 cm, the DIVCHI’s 80 cm width is the only boltless footprint in this folder that is even a candidate.

Pick the deck before the brand

Once the door and the per-shelf line make sense, the deck decides what you can put down. Board bays here are the DIVCHI, whose deck is not named, REQUISITE NEEDS with MDF, both SONGMICS pairs with yellow MDF, and Harbour with engineered wood. A board keeps screws and small boxes from falling through. Wire is Mapleyard and the three Forthcan racks. Open mesh needs bins for fixings. Mapleyard and the £93.99 Forthcan state castors, and that Forthcan’s moving line is 550 lb against 1,100 lb standing. The 115 cm and 140 cm listings do not state wheels. Plastic or rubber feet are the non-rolling default on DIVCHI, REQUISITE NEEDS, and SUPEER. Both SONGMICS packs include an anti-tip kit and are floor-standing, even though one silver field says wall while the mounting type says floor. Which deck to choose is on boltless shelving or wire shelving. The mallet sequence is on how to assemble boltless garage shelving.

What the rules actually cover

A private household garage is not a warehouse inspection. HSE’s INDG291 says PUWER does not apply to domestic work in a private household. If the same bay is work equipment in a staffed store, PUWER does apply, and INDG412 tells workplaces to install racking for the load and to take damaged racking out of use. HSG76 is the longer warehousing guide, and following it is not compulsory. SEMA codes and BS EN 15512 are about workplace pallet racking. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 are the GB baseline for goods sold to the public. They do not turn an amazon.co.uk title into a tested capacity. Discard two cells before you compare stars: DIVCHI’s item weight is printed as 200 g and the material line says aluminium. Mapleyard’s material field says wood while the bullets describe alloy-steel wire. Harbour’s number-of-items field says 1 while the title says a set of two.

Common questions

How much weight can one shelf hold?
On the boltless listings here the stated figure is 175 kg per shelf, and REQUISITE NEEDS adds that the load should be evenly distributed. SUPEER states 200 kg per shelf. Mapleyard states 114 kg per shelf. The wheeled Forthcan and the 140 cm Forthcan state pounds, and the 115 cm Forthcan does not print a per-shelf kilogram at all. None of those lines is a lab result from this comparison. Read the per-shelf figure, then the bay total, and do not add them together.
Does 875 kg mean the whole pair?
No. On these pages 875 kg is five times 175 kg, written as the total for a five-tier unit. Harbour and both SONGMICS packs contain two bays, and the bullets do not say the 875 kg figure is doubled because of that. Treat 875 kg as one bay’s arithmetic unless a later listing states a pair total in plain words. The same caution applies to SUPEER, where 1,000 kg in the bullets and 600 kg in another field are not a range you can average.
What door width do I need?
Use the minimum door width printed on the listing you are buying. That is 90 cm for SUPEER and the 90 cm boltless bays, 80 cm of finished width for the DIVCHI, 115 cm for the mid Forthcan, and 140 cm for the widest Forthcan. Measure the opening you will carry it through, not only the space where it will stand. A built 180 cm bay is also tall, so a low side door can stop a rack that would have fitted in pieces.
Is 40 cm deep enough?
It is enough for tins, boxes, and most domestic garage clutter if you keep the load spread out. It is shallow compared with a 600 mm trade bay. The Forthcan wire racks are about 45 to 46 cm deep. If your crates are deeper than the deck, they will overhang, and an overhang is not the same as the stated evenly distributed load. Forty centimetres of yellow MDF also flexes sooner than a metal deck of the same depth when the weight sits in the middle.
Does a home garage need a SEMA inspection?
No. SEMA and BS EN 15512 are workplace pallet-racking references, and BSI excludes static steel shelving from that standard. A private garage is outside PUWER on HSE’s INDG291. If the rack is work equipment, or it is damaged and still loaded, use workplace guidance and a competent person rather than a domestic flat-pack routine. Booking an inspector for a £23 boltless bay does not create a capacity the listing never tested.
Why do two SONGMICS listings show the same review count?
The silver GLR040E02 at £42.99 and the black GLR040B02 at £45.99 both print 4.1 from 19,832 reviews and the same review text. That is one pool, not two. Do not add the counts when you compare them with Harbour’s separate 421 reviews. The useful differences are the finish, the shelf step (5 cm on silver, 3 cm on black), and the price, not a second crowd of buyers.
