How to use an adjustable sawhorse

Updated: 2026-10-21

The horse is unfolded on the drive, the sheet is balanced on one rail, and the saw is already in your hand. This page is the setup: open it, level it, keep both sides of the cut held, and pack it away without standing on it. Products Compared used the seven amazon.co.uk listings in the [adjustable sawhorse comparison](/hub/workshop/adjustable-sawhorse), read on 19 October 2026. There is no lab test. Open and lock

A pin or a latch that is not seated is only a rail waiting to drop. On a pin-lock horse such as the Arrows UK pair, each leg has its own pin, and a reviewer finds the default height short until those pins are reset. Push the pin fully through, and tug the leg, before you lift a door onto it. On the HOMCOM trestles the pins are part of a build. Reviewers use 8 mm, 10 mm, 13 mm and 14 mm spanners and a Pozi 2 screwdriver, and missing pins or feet turn up in the reviews. If a pin or a foot is not in the bag, stop. The Bora Workhorse XT opens with a latch, then the legs drop and need pushing apart. A UK review says unpainted edges are sharp enough to cut. A UK review of the Speedhorse says the legs do not always lock when you fold it. If the latch does not catch, the horse is not ready.

Level the rail

Four feet on the ground are the setup. Three feet and a locked pin is still the wrong setup, because the rail twists as soon as you lean on one end. FatMax feet adjust one at a time, which is how you take a slope out of a driveway. Arrows pins do the same job, one leg at a time. HOMCOM does not state independent legs, so a tall trestle on a cross-fall may rock even after you have picked a hole. Put a spirit level on the rail after the pins are in. A 130 cm HOMCOM next to a 62 cm Tough Master is not a pair. HSE's posture guidance puts manipulative standing work about 50–100 mm below elbow height.

Support the cut

Two horses, not one, for a door, a worktop, or a sheet. Space them so the middle does not sag into the saw, and so the offcut still has something under it when the cut finishes. If the middle dips, move the horses in or add a third support. HSE WIS16 describes the failure you are avoiding: a workpiece that is not held at the infeed and the outfeed. A sacrificial top is a strip you can saw into so the horse survives. Bora listings are pre-drilled for a 2x4 or for 38 x 89 mm timber. Screw that strip on before you cut. FatMax reviewers already cut the plastic top, so a timber batten in the notches is the surface to sacrifice. The kilogram sentence belongs on the sawhorse weight capacity page.

Fold it without standing on it

Clear the rail and fold one leg at a time with your hands clear of the hinge. On the Speedhorse, confirm the lock has caught before you lift it. Do not stand on the rail to paint a ceiling. A domestic kilogram claim is not a platform rating. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 cover falls that can cause injury, including low falls, and a sawhorse is a material support, not a working platform. Trimming the door, once the two rails are level, is the sawhorse for trimming doors page.

Common questions

How far apart do I put the two horses?
Far enough that the workpiece does not sag into the blade, and close enough that the offcut still rests on something when the cut breaks through. A published US tip of four to six feet is a workshop habit, not a UK measurement you must copy. If you can press the middle down with one hand, move a horse in before you start the saw.
How do I stop the sheet falling at the end of the cut?
Support both pieces, not only the piece you mean to keep. Two horses under a long sheet often leave the offcut with nothing under it in the last few centimetres. A third support, or a helper holding the offcut, is the practical fix. Letting the offcut hinge on the last fibres is how the saw kicks.
How do I level on a slope?
Adjust one leg or one foot at a time until all four feet bear and a level on the rail reads true. FatMax and Arrows are built for that, slowly. A horse with one height for the whole frame will rock on a driveway even if the pin is locked. If the foot was never in the box, that horse is incomplete.
Can I stand on the horse to paint?
No. These listings are material supports. A large load number is not a schedule of a working platform, and the listings do not claim BS 8630 or BS 1139. A HOMCOM reviewer says the trestle is too flimsy to stand on. Painting a ceiling, or boarding across two horses to make a step, is access equipment work. Use a platform that is sold and rated for standing.
What if a pin or a foot is missing?
Do not use the horse. HOMCOM reviews include missing height pins, fixings, and cases with two feet instead of four. A trestle with two feet cannot be levelled into a four-foot stance. Contact the seller while you still have the carton, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if the goods are not as described. Drilling a new pin hole changes the horse into something the listing never rated.
