Sawhorse for trimming doors

Updated: 2026-10-21

The internal door is off its hinges on the hall floor, and the only support in the garage is one folding rail. A sawhorse for trimming doors has to be two supports, at a height you can steer a saw or a plane, with something between the metal and the face. Products Compared looked at the seven adjustable horses on amazon.co.uk in the [adjustable sawhorse comparison](/hub/workshop/adjustable-sawhorse), prices captured on 19 October 2026. This is one workpiece, and it is not a lab test. A purchase through the comparison may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two supports, not one

An internal door is a long finished panel. One horse under the middle lets one end sit on the floor and the other end bounce when you push a plane. The second support should be a second horse at the same rail height. Clamp the door to both rails so it cannot walk as you cut. Four listings in this set are pairs. Tough Master and both Bora horses are singles on these ASINs. A UK Speedhorse review expected a pair and received one. The order of those choices sits in the adjustable sawhorse buying guide.

A height you can saw at

The cut along the bottom of a door is a controlled cut. You want the edge near elbow height. UK trade horses such as UJK's pair and Roughneck's Colt 600E sit around 62–82 cm. Tough Master prints that band. WUDLEP prints 75–92 cm. HOMCOM prints 80–130 cm. At the top of that range many people are reaching, and the saw is harder to keep square. HSE's posture guidance puts manipulative standing work about 50–100 mm below elbow height. It is guidance, not a door-hanging regulation. A 6 ft 4 in user should try a mid setting before locking the maximum. Adjustment matters when the driveway slopes and one end of the door would rock.

Clamps and the face

Veneer, paint, and foil faces mark as soon as a gritty rail or a bare clamp jaw bites. Put a clean batten, a piece of hardboard, or the sacrificial strip the horse was drilled for between the door and the metal. FatMax notches take about 38 x 63 mm timber, a better bed than the plastic top reviewers cut into. Arrows has hooks for a 2x4. HOMCOM does not state a timber top, so pack the rail before you lay a veneered door on the painted steel. A screw clamp straight onto the face will print an oval you will see after the door is rehung. If you are not sure a hollow core can spare the cut, a joiner should see the door before you open the skin. Locking the pins is the how to use an adjustable sawhorse page.

Which horses in this set are pairs

HOMCOM's pair is the budget door trestle if you will assemble it. Reviewers use it for doors, and they also report missing pins or feet. Leave it below 130 cm. The load lines disagree, 100 kg in the bullets and 200 kg on the specification, and an internal door is well inside either figure. FatMax has independent feet for a slope, so keep the door off the plastic top by using timber in the notches. Arrows is a pair with a 78 cm rail and timber hooks, and a material line that UK reviews dispute. WUDLEP's two reviews are not a reason to lay a veneered door on it. A single cannot be the whole of a door setup.

Common questions

Can I trim a door on one sawhorse?
You can balance it there for a moment, and you should not cut it there. One rail leaves an end on the floor or in mid-air, and the door twists as the saw or the plane loads one stile. Use two horses, or one horse and a second support at the same height that will not mark the face.
What height lets me saw the bottom without stooping onto the blade?
Set the rail so the cut sits a little below your elbow, in the region of the 62–82 cm trade band for many people. HOMCOM can go from 80 cm to 130 cm, and the upper end is a reach for a lot of users. If you are stooping so far that you cannot see the line, lower the horse.
How do I stop the trestle marking the veneer?
Keep bare metal, painted steel, and plastic off the face. Use a clean timber strip in the notches or hooks, or a hardboard packer, and put pads under the clamp jaws. FatMax plastic tops get scratched and sawn in ordinary use, so they are a poor bed for a door you are about to rehang.
Is a £33 pair strong enough for a door?
A domestic internal door does not approach either of HOMCOM's printed loads, 100 kg per horse or 200 kg on the specification line. Assembly, missing pins, and a rail that may be too high are the difficult parts. If the feet and pins are present and you set the height for your elbow, the £32.99 pair is a reasonable door support. It is still not a step.
My Bora listing is one horse. What do I add?
Add a second support at the same rail height. A second Workhorse XT or a second Speedhorse is a second purchase on these ASINs. A trade twin pack is a different SKU, so do not assume the amazon.co.uk page was that pack. Until the second support exists, leave the door on the floor.
How much can I cut off a hollow door?
These sawhorse listings do not test hollow-core doors, so there is no safe millimetre figure to copy from them. A thin trim for carpet clearance is ordinary. A deep cut can open the cardboard core. If the door is fire-rated or the core is unknown, stop and ask a joiner.
