150 gsm weed membrane: what to check before you buy

Updated: October 2026

You are about to pay for a roll because the title says heavy duty, and you still cannot see a weight. A 150 gsm weed membrane is cloth of about 150 grams per square metre. On 16 October 2026, only three GardenGloss sizes in this comparison state 150 g/m². The other kept listings omit it or print 8 oz. This guide is the order of checks: printed weight, width, named weave, pegs, and a cover. The Products Compared editorial team did not weigh the cloth. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The full table is the [weed membrane comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-membrane-150g).

What 150 g/m² actually is

Grams per square metre describe the cloth, not the parcel. A long roll can be heavy in the box and still say nothing about the fabric. The three lines that print 150 g/m² are GardenGloss at £25.99 for 10 m × 2 m folded, £34.99 for 25 m × 1 m on a roll, and £39.99 for 15 m × 2 m folded. Each spec table also says fleece, and the weave is not named. Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects goods to match the description. If both words matter, ask the seller which one the cloth is. Vivo's bullet says 8 oz and 350 N. Treating that as about 271 g/m² would be a conversion, not a weigh. Heavy duty is also used for 100 gsm cloth, so the phrase is not the number.

What to read before the star rating

Read five lines before the stars: grams per square metre, the open size, the material words, what is in the box, and whether you will cover the sheet the day you lay it. Ram's title says 2 m × 10 m at £8.99, while a bullet says 2 m × 5 m. Velway, LCGOD, iropro, YOUNTHYE, and Ram name a woven cloth. GardenGloss pairs fleece with 150 g/m². Vivo does not name a fibre. A UV line is not a cover. Stars come after those lines. iropro is 4.5 from 6,345, Ram is 4.5 from 3,653, and Velway is 4.6 from 1,200. GardenGloss is 4.4 from 1,306 in one pool. Vivo is 4.7 from 1,067, shared by both lengths. YOUNTHYE has no review line. A large count does not print a missing weight.

Width, folds, and pegs

A path 90 cm wide can take a 1 m roll. A bed 1.8 m wide on a 1 m roll needs a join, so you buy more length than the bare area. LCGOD, the short Vivo, and the GardenGloss 25 m roll are 1 m. Velway, Ram's title, the folded GardenGloss packs, and the Vivo 50 m roll are 2 m. iropro and YOUNTHYE are both 3 m × 10 m. GardenGloss states that the 2 m widths are folded. Open a fold fully before you cut, or you slice a hidden layer. Velway includes 30 U-pegs with 10 m². YOUNTHYE includes 10 pins with 30 m². The other eight listings do not include fixings. The how to lay weed membrane page is the sequence. Which size matches the bed is on the best 150 gsm weed membrane page.

When a lighter cloth is still the right buy

A lower grams-per-square-metre figure is not automatically a weaker cloth, and a higher one is not a drive. Hy-Tex Covertex is a UK woven sold at 100 g/m² with published figures of 18 kN/m and 13 kN/m, under BS EN ISO 10319:2024. None of these ten listings prints kilonewtons per metre. RHS Weedban is a lighter horticultural spunbond. It can sit under mulch and still be far under 150 gsm. That does not make it a substitute for a geotextile a fitter has specified. Gravel under cars stays on the weed membrane under gravel page. If a landscaper has named a geotextile, buy that cloth.

Common questions

Does heavy duty mean 150 g/m²?
No. Heavy duty is a marketing phrase, and UK Amazon search also uses it for 100 gsm cloth. In this comparison only the three GardenGloss sizes print 150 g/m². Ram, Velway, iropro, LCGOD, and YOUNTHYE do not print grams per square metre. Vivo prints 8 oz and 350 N, which is a different unit. If the number you searched is not on the page, the title has not confirmed it.
What should be printed on the listing before I buy?
You want grams per square metre, the open width and length, the material words, and the contents of the box. Check for a second size that contradicts the title, as on Ram, where a bullet says 2 m × 5 m against a 2 m × 10 m title. Then read whether pegs are included. Stars and the review count come after those lines, because a high rating does not fill in a missing weight.
Is a wider roll better than more square metres of a narrow one?
Width cuts joins. A 3 m sheet such as iropro's 3 m × 10 m covers a path with fewer overlaps than a 1 m roll of the same area. You still add overlap before you compare square metres, or a 1 m roll looks cheaper than it is. A wider folded pack is harder to cut than a 1 m roll. Match the width to the bed, then buy the length.
Do I need pegs in the box?
You need pegs. You do not need them to have been packed by the seller, unless you have none in the shed. Velway includes 30 U-pegs with 10 m². YOUNTHYE includes 10 pins with 30 m², which is sparse for that edge length. The other listings are the sheet only. Thin wire bends in compacted soil in UK reviews, so test the ground with one peg first.
Is 100 gsm always weaker than 150 gsm?
No. Strength is tensile performance, not the grams on their own. A specified 100 g/m² woven such as Hy-Tex Covertex publishes kilonewtons per metre. These amazon.co.uk listings do not. A lighter horticultural sheet can still be the right covered cloth for a border. Do not treat 150 gsm as always stronger, and do not treat it as a driveway structure.
Which of these ten listings actually print 150 g/m²?
GardenGloss 10 m × 2 m (B07YZNVHY5) at £25.99, GardenGloss 25 m × 1 m (B089KKV3KP) at £34.99, and GardenGloss 15 m × 2 m (B07YZNYN3C) at £39.99. The spec table on each also says fleece. The other seven listings do not print 150 g/m².
