How to use a weed brush

Updated: October 2026

The brush is in the shed, the joints are green, and the last pass only skimmed the seedlings. How to use a weed brush is a set order: tighten the pole, cut or scrape what is rooted, brush what is loose, then put sand back only when a sand joint is dry. This page is that sequence. Emptied joints on a drive are the [block paving weed brush](/hub/weed-control/weed-brush/sub/weed-brush-block-paving) page. The listings are the [weed brush comparison](/hub/weed-control/weed-brush). What the brush is for

The Royal Horticultural Society splits hard-surface weeding by tool. A knife runs along the crack, and an angled wire brush takes moss, seedlings and debris. A dandelion weeder is for a taproot, so wires that skate over a crown leave the root in the joint. When the crack is too narrow, cut what you can and come back. Moss and seedlings are what the wires can finish. They reach the mouth of the joint, and a scraper still has to open a crown. RHS notes on moss treat brushing as clearance of growth you can see, with regrowth on a damp surface. Wait for dry slabs, because a green film is also the slippery-paving problem in that guidance. A brush does not kill a root you failed to lift.

The sequence on a dry day

Seat the pole first. Several buyers say telescopic sections work only if you tighten the joints first, because a loose collar lets the head twist and the stroke skim. Turn each joint until it stops rotating, then check after a short run. If a collar walks open, reseat it. A pole that still unwinds is a fault. Knife or scrape what is rooted, then brush. The Weed Guy, a trade blog rather than a test lab, and Paving Factsheet 1 from June 2023 treat a brush or a knife as enough to clear the mouth of the joint. Pressure washing shifts more sand. A Sbestily review on amazon.co.uk says dried, already-sprayed weeds came away more easily when the brush was pulled towards you. That stroke is for brittle dead growth, and live moss needs no spray first. Sweep, then refill a dry sand joint only. Pavingexpert notes that a weed often brings sand with it, and a half-empty joint hurts the pavement. Refill when the joint is dry, as the June 2023 factsheet says. Use kiln-dried sand only in that kind of joint.

Eyes, pets and a pole that unwinds

Wires leave the block and lie where feet go. A Mitclear review describes wires in a paw and in a shoe. Health and Safety Executive guidance treats flying fragments as an eye hazard, and on a workplace the duty sits with the employer. Eye protection is still sensible while the block sheds. The goggles mentioned by the RHS are for pressure-washing. Keep pets and bare feet off the slabs until you have swept. A pull towards you, the Sbestily stroke for dried sprayed growth, brings pieces back to your feet, and a push sends them along the joint. Use the pull on brittle material, then sweep before anyone walks the row. If the pole unscrews, tighten the collars before you start and again when the head twists. If a section still spins after you lock it, or the collar strips on the first patio, stop. That is a fault in the tool.

When to stop and ask for help

Stop when a slab rocks under the knife or the brush. You are loading a unit that has lost its bed, and tipped sand will not rebuild the laying course. Pavingexpert's half-empty joint means sand missing between units that still sit firm. A hollow under a rocking slab is a paving repair. Ask someone who lays that surface. Stay off the roof, even where a listing mentions tiles. Reach from stable ground if you can, and leave growth you would have to climb for. A telescopic pole is only a longer handle. A tool that falls apart on first use is a fault, separate from a blade that wears. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires satisfactory quality under section 9 and a 30-day right to reject under section 22. That covers a collapsing pole on a small patio, and it is not advice on your order. Stop and speak to the seller.

Common questions

Do I scrape before I brush?
Yes, when the weed is rooted. The Royal Horticultural Society uses a knife along the crack and an angled wire brush for moss, seedlings and debris. Paving Factsheet 1, from June 2023, treats a brush or a knife as the way to clear the mouth of the joint, then a refill only once the joint is dry. If the crack is too narrow, cut what you can reach and repeat later.
Will a weed brush pull a dandelion root?
No. The wires suit moss, seedlings and debris. A taproot needs a weeder or a knife under the crown, which is how the Royal Horticultural Society divides tools on hard surfaces. If the joint is too narrow, cut what you can and come back. Heavier pressure does not pull the root, and brushing does not kill what stays in the crack.
What should I do when wires fall out?
Stop and sweep before anyone walks there. A Mitclear review describes wires in a paw and in a shoe. Eye protection makes sense once the block sheds, because the Health and Safety Executive links flying fragments with eye protection, and the workplace duty sits with the employer. One Sbestily spare arrived with no scraper, so a new head may miss the part you lost.
When do I put kiln-dried sand back?
Put kiln-dried sand back when the joint is clean and dry, and only if the paving was jointed that way. Pavingexpert says a pulled weed often brings sand with it, and a half-empty joint hurts the pavement. The June 2023 factsheet says to refill after scraping, once the joint is dry. Wet sand stays on the slab. A permeable drive uses a different refill.
My pole unscrews as I work. Is that my fault?
Often the collars were loose. Tighten each section first, and again if the head twists after a metre, as buyers of these telescopic brushes describe. If it still unwinds once seated, or the collar strips on first use, that is a fault. Sections 9 and 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 cover satisfactory quality and a 30-day right to reject. That is the legal frame, not a verdict on your order.
