How to use a mini angle grinder

Updated: 22 October 2026

The cordless cutter is on the bench, the disc is still in the packet, and the only instructions you can find are for a corded 115 mm grinder with a 3-pin plug. This is how to use a mini angle grinder in that situation: battery off, guard on, disc matched to the stated speed, then a short cut. It is not a ranking. The ten kits are on the [mini angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/mini-angle-grinder). Peter F. followed Electrical Safety First, HSE guidance and the review themes in this capture. Nothing here is a timed test of your tool. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the disc goes on

Corded manuals say unplug. On this tool you take the battery off before the wrench touches the nut. A pack can still spin the disc if the switch is jogged. The diameter has to match the tool, about 75 mm or 76 mm when the listing states it, and the bore has to match the spindle. A 115 mm disc with a 22.23 mm hole is the wrong part. The maximum speed on the disc must be at least the speed on the tool. Most of these listings say 19,500 rpm. ConBlom says 28,000 rpm, so a disc marked only for 19,500 rpm does not belong on it. Reject a cracked or glazed disc. Electrical Safety First's advice assumes a cable, and the protection still applies: goggles, not ordinary glasses, and gloves.

Fitting the disc and the guard

Fit the guard first and leave it on. HSE guidance on grinding wheels is written for workplaces, and the point still applies at home: the guard contains fragments, and you do not exceed the wheel speed. If the guard will not enter the space, the cut is the wrong job, not a cue to run a bare disc. Where the listing claims a spindle lock, hold it and loosen the nut with the wrench in the box. These listings give no torque. Seat the disc, follow the rotation arrow so it agrees with the tool, and tighten the nut until it is firm. If there is no arrow, stop and use a marked disc. Put the battery on only then. Stand clear and run the new disc for at least 30 seconds away from your body before it touches metal. That 30 seconds is Electrical Safety First's figure.

The cut itself

Clamp the work. A loose bracket will snatch, and a short pipe will roll. Support a panel so the kerf does not pinch the disc as it closes. Point the sparks away from you, and away from fuel, plastic trim and dry leaves. Let the disc cut. Forcing it is how these tools stall. Do not cool a spinning disc with water. When the cut is a bolt or thin pipe, depth and disc type sit on cutting bolts with a mini angle grinder.

When it cuts out or the disc is wrong

A cut-out is a stop, not a cue to lean harder. Take the battery off, see if the pack is flat or will not charge, and see if you were forcing the disc. A toothed wood blade, including the one Eborrkee's listing describes, is not a way through a bolt. GOV.UK's PSA2 alert covers toothed saw blades because they kick back. A grinding disc is not a cutting disc. INGCO's box includes both, and slicing with the grinding disc is the mistake to refuse. If the cut is on a gas pipe, a brake line or a loaded fixing, or the material may contain asbestos, put the tool down. If the job has become a weld, the format choice is 76 mm versus 115 mm.

Common questions

Do I unplug a cordless mini grinder?
You remove the battery. The tool has no 3-pin plug, though the charger may, and that plug should be a UK one. Take the pack off before a disc change, before you inspect a cut-out, and before you set the tool down. Electrical Safety First's unplug step is the right idea for a corded grinder. On this cutter the isolation is the battery.
Which way does the disc go, and how tight is the nut?
Follow the arrow on the disc so it matches the tool, and seat the disc in the flanges. These listings give no torque, so tighten the nut firmly with the supplied wrench once the spindle is locked, if a lock is actually there. One JinsenTGG review says the manual's button is missing. If there is no arrow, fit a marked disc rather than guessing a direction.
How long should I run a new disc before it touches metal?
At least 30 seconds, clear of your body and of the work. That figure is from Electrical Safety First. Fit the battery only after the guard and the nut are on, and do not start with the disc touching the metal. If it vibrates in that half minute, take the battery off and do not use the disc.
Why does it stop every few seconds?
Reviews in this capture describe an overloaded cut, a flat pack, or brushes. None of that diagnoses the tool in your hand. JinsenTGG comments mention a stop every 5 to 10 seconds or after about 20 seconds. Rivlox comments mention stopping under load. Take the battery off and do not force the next pass. If a fresh pack still dies on a light cut, stop.
Can I use the wood disc with teeth that came in the box?
No. Eborrkee's listing describes a toothed wood disc, and GOV.UK's PSA2 alert says not to fit that kind of blade to an angle grinder. It is not a shortcut for a bolt or for timber. Kickback is the reason. Use a metal cutting disc marked for at least the tool's stated speed, or do not make the cut.
