Mini angle grinder cutting bolts

Updated: 22 October 2026

The bolt is behind a bracket, the 115 mm guard hits the arm before the disc reaches the shank, and you are on the driveway with a cordless 76 mm cutter. This page is about mini angle grinder cutting bolts, studs, thin pipe and sheet, and about the point where the section is simply too deep. Prices sit on the [mini angle grinder comparison](/hub/tools/mini-angle-grinder). Peter F. used the 21 October 2026 capture. Depth figures below come from other sites. We did not measure them. What thin metal means for a 76 mm disc

Thin metal here means a bolt, a stud, a bracket, a piece of sheet, or a thin pipe the disc can reach in one pass. It is not a chassis rail, and it is not a weld you want ground flat. A rule of thumb on bestanglegrinder.co.uk, updated 24 September 2026, puts a 76 mm tool at about 16 mm of depth, usually under 20 mm. Makita dealers state 16 mm on the DMC300Z without the dust cover. Normodic's listing states 20 mm. No other ASIN in this capture states a depth. A 16 mm figure is not a promise that a 16 mm bolt falls off in one motion, and the guard still has to fit.

The disc, not more pressure

Use a thin metal cutting disc marked for at least the speed on the tool. Most of these listings say 19,500 rpm. ConBlom says 28,000 rpm, so the disc has to carry that mark before it goes near a bolt. A grinding disc is the wrong wheel for the slice. INGCO's box includes four metal cutting discs and two grinding discs, which makes the mix-up easy. Clamp the work, and keep sparks off fuel, underseal, plastic and dry grass. Do not cut a fuel line or a brake line.

What UK reviews in this set actually managed

The successes are short and specific, and they are not a runtime you can copy. ConBlom reviews, 4.2 from 150, describe alloy, a coil spring and about ten bolts, and also fast disc wear and cut-out. INGCO reviews describe small chassis cuts and stalling under a heavy load. TEENO's bullets exclude continuous thick metal. Rivlox reviews, 3.6 from 224, say the discs only score soft Welsh slate. Slate is the wrong story for a metal disc.

When to put this tool down

Put it down when the section is deeper than the disc can reach, when you need a weld ground flat, or when the material is concrete, tile or thick cast iron. A flap disc belongs on a 115 mm grinder. If the bolt is structural, or the cut would meet a brake or fuel line, it is not a driveway job. A toothed wood disc is not a metal shortcut. GOV.UK's PSA2 alert is the reason. If the cut is still a thin bolt in a gap, the battery-off sequence is on how to use a mini angle grinder.

Common questions

Can this cut a seized bolt?
It can, when the shank is thin enough for a 76 mm disc, the part is held, and you use a metal cutting disc. ConBlom reviews mention about ten bolts and a coil spring. INGCO reviews mention small chassis cuts. Those are themes, not a guarantee for your car. If the fixing is loaded, or the disc stalls as it bites, stop. Do not remove the guard to reach it.
Should I use a cutting disc or a grinding disc for a bolt?
Use a thin metal cutting disc rated for at least the tool's stated speed. A grinding disc rubs a surface and is the wrong wheel for parting a bolt. INGCO lists four cutting discs and two grinding discs, so the mix-up is easy. Change wheels with the battery off. Do not saw with the side of a thin cutting disc either.
Will it do an exhaust pipe or a thin bracket?
A thin pipe or bracket is the job, if the guard fits and you can see it is not a fuel or brake line. Reviews here mention alloy, a coil spring and small chassis cuts, not a measured exhaust job. If the wall is within the disc's reach and the pipe cannot pinch the wheel, the cutter is plausible. A thick pipe under tension is not.
Why do sparks matter more on a car?
The underside holds fuel vapour, plastic, wiring and underseal. A spark that is harmless over a bench can land on those. Electrical Safety First says to keep sparks off anything flammable, and a 76 mm disc does not shrink that advice. Point the stream away from the vehicle. Do not cut above a fuel line or a brake line. Clear dry leaves first.
Can I grind the weld flat afterwards with the same tool?
Not on this cutter. It is for a thin cut in a gap. A weld or a flap disc is the 115 mm job. INGCO includes grinding discs, and reviews still say that kit can stall under a heavy load. Those discs do not make it a welder's grinder. If the weld is the task, change format rather than loading the small disc on its side.
