How to use a Metabo 125mm angle grinder

Updated: October 2026

The guard is loose, the disc is in your hand, and the nut is either M-Quick or a two-hole nut that needs the pin wrench. Those nuts do not come off the same way. This is how to use a Metabo 125mm angle grinder: name the nut, isolate the power, fit the disc that nut is built for, and leave the guard on. The [Metabo angle grinder 125 comparison](/hub/tools/metabo-angle-grinder-125) holds the eight listings. Which code you should have bought is the [buying guide](/hub/tools/metabo-angle-grinder-125/sub/metabo-angle-grinder-125-buying-guide). Peter F. did not run a cutting test. Identify the nut in your box

Look at the nut before you follow a generic unscrew video. M-Quick is named on the 240 V WEV bullet, the WP included list and the WEV 15-125 box list. The W 750-125, both 18 V bodies and the 850 set list a two-hole nut. The 110 V WEV included line names the grinder only, so you identify the nut on the spindle. The family manual says not to use M-Quick above a 7.1 mm clamping thickness. The two-hole nut has two faces, one for a thin disc and one for a thicker disc. Mixing an M-Quick nut onto a two-hole flange is the mistake this step is here to stop.

Change the disc with the power isolated

Unplug a corded Metabo before the nut moves. On either cordless body, take the pack off. Off at the switch, with the pack still fitted, is not isolated. The only dead-man wording here is the paddle bullet on the WP 11-125. For M-Quick, seat the lugs in the grooves, tighten by hand, then turn the disc clockwise to finish the clamp. For a two-hole nut, hold the spindle lock and use the wrench the box names. With the power still off, the disc should sit flat inside the guard.

Guard, handle, and the disc marking

The guard stays on. HSG17 treats it as part of mounting a wheel, and the family manual says to fit the cut-off guard before you cut. The disc’s rpm mark must cover the tool’s no-load speed, including the top of a printed range. PSA5 says an angle grinder is not a place for a toothed saw blade. Use both hands, with eye protection and the work clamped. Metabo UK declares 6 m/s² for surface grinding on the WEV 11-125 Quick. The Vibration Regulations 2005 set an eight-hour action value of 2.5 m/s² and a limit of 5 m/s². That declared figure is not the daily dose, so keep the session short and wear hearing protection.

When you stop

Let go of the WP paddle and that listing describes the tool as stopping because you released it. On every other body, wait until the disc has stopped before you set it down. Do not press the spindle lock to hurry a two-hole nut. PUWER 1998 binds employers and the relevant self-employed, and HSG17 expects trained people to mount wheels. This page is not permission for an employee who has not been trained. If the disc grabs, release the tool. Socket questions belong on the 110 V or 230 V page, and the missing pack on the cordless or corded page.

Common questions

Do I unplug before I change the disc?
Yes. Pull the plug on a corded Metabo before the nut moves. On the W 18 7-125 and the brushless body, take the pack off. Off at the switch, with the pack fitted, is not isolated. Put the pack back only when the guard, the nut and the disc are seated. Electrical Safety First and the family manual both start a wheel change this way.
How do I undo an M-Quick nut?
Switch off and press the red spindle button as the disc is stopping. Metabo’s description says the nut then loosens about half a turn. That timing is only for this release. Do not press the lock while you are cutting, and do not use the step on a two-hole nut. Above a 7.1 mm clamping thickness, the family manual says not to use M-Quick.
Which face of the two-hole nut is for a thin disc?
The faces differ, and the family manual draws which seating is for a thin disc and which is for a thicker one. Match that figure to the disc in your hand. This page will not rename the faces from memory. Use the two-hole wrench with the power isolated and the spindle lock held. A thin disc on the wrong face does not clamp as the manual intends.
Can I take the guard off to reach a corner?
No. The guard stays on, and the cut-off guard goes on before a cut. HSG17 treats the guard as part of mounting the wheel. A corner you cannot reach with the guard fitted needs another approach. Do not fit a larger wheel by removing the guard, and do not run the disc open.
What disc speed marking do I need?
At least the tool’s no-load speed. A fixed 11,500 rpm body needs a disc marked for at least 11,500 rpm. Where the listing prints a range, such as 2,800–10,500 per minute on the 110 V WEV, the disc has to cover the top of that range.
When should I stop and get a trained person?
Stop if you are mounting wheels in employment without training. HSG17 and PUWER are that boundary. Also stop for structural steel, a suspected live cable, a failed switch or plug, and a cut a 125 mm disc cannot finish in one controlled pass. If the disc grabs, release it. An electronic shutdown bullet is not a reason to force the wheel through.
