Makita 230 mm angle grinder: 110 V or 240 V

Updated: October 2026

You are looking at two Makita cartons that both seem to say 230, and one of them will not run from the socket beside the back door. A Makita 230 mm angle grinder 110V or 240V choice is a supply choice. The 230 mm part is the disc. The 110 V or 240 V part is the lead and the transformer. The only 110 V title is the GA9050/1 at £129.50. The 240 V title is the GA9020/2 at £107.99. None of them prints BS 1363. The [Makita angle grinder 230 comparison](/hub/tools/makita-angle-grinder-230) shows the rows. This page says which socket, or which transformer, each title belongs on.

230 mm is not 230 V

A 230 mm disc is the large cutting class. A 230 V figure is a mains voltage. UK domestic mains are nominally 230 V, and a 240 V title here is the domestic claim. Hilti’s UK buying guide says 110 V or 230 V does not, by itself, change how the disc cuts. It changes the supply, and what happens if the lead is damaged. Read the title before the spec table. The GA9020/2 title says 240 V and the row says 220 V. The GA9050R row prints 230 with no unit word, and the title is silent. The GA038GZ07 says 40 V, a battery platform, not a third mains option. That body goes to the corded or XGT page. If the title and the row disagree, the title is the claim you test.

The GA9050/1 and the 24 V row

The GA9050/1, ASIN B006BRF01U, is the only title that says 110 V. The item-type line repeats 110 V and 2,000 W, at £129.50. The spec table prints 24 volts and 2 watts. Those cells fight the title. They are not a 24 V tool and they are not a 2 W motor. Reviews match the title. A UK review says you fit the plug from the instructions. German and Spanish reviews say it arrived without a plug. One UK review says the bearings failed after two days. The star line is 3.9 from 11. You buy this ASIN when the site supply is already 110 V and a competent person fits the plug. You do not buy it for a 13 A socket.

What HSE asks for on site

HSE says portable tools on site should be cordless or 110 V from a centre-tapped transformer, so voltage to earth stays at or below 55 V. That is why a 110 V GA9050 sits beside a 240 V GA9020. A centre-tapped supply is not a travel adaptor, and reviews of the GA9050/1 say it cannot be used on a 230 V socket. A 230 V tool on site still needs a look-over each shift, a weekly inspection, a monthly combined test and a 30 mA RCD. This page does not size a transformer. Disc fitting stays on the how to use page.

The 240 V title and the Euro-plug reviews

The GA9020/2 is the domestic title: 240 V, 230 mm, £107.99, 2,200 W and 6,600 rpm, with 4.6 from 874. Electrical Safety First expects a UK 3-pin plug. This description does not say BS 1363. UK reviews, more than one of them, say a Euro two-pin plug was fitted, including on a replacement. A 240 V title is the voltage claim, not the plug in the bag. If a Euro plug arrives, a competent person fits a UK plug. Do not use a shaver adaptor. The GA9050R prints 230 without a unit and does not say 240 V or 110 V in the title. For a house socket, the GA9020/2 is the title that says 240 V, if you accept the Euro-plug reviews. For a site transformer, the GA9050/1 is the title that says 110 V.

Common questions

Can the GA9050/1 go into a normal UK socket?
No. The title says 110 V. Reviews say the tool arrived without a plug, and they say the label is 110 V, so it is not a 13 A domestic grinder. It belongs on a 110 V centre-tapped supply after a competent person fits the plug. Putting it into a wall socket because the disc is 230 mm confuses the disc with the voltage.
Why does its spec table say 24 V?
The spec table prints 24 volts and 2 watts. The title, the item type and the included-components line say 110 V and 2,000 W. The 24 V cell fights the title, so you do not buy a 24 V supply for it and you do not treat 2 W as the motor. The reviews talk about 110 V and a missing plug, which follows the title.
What is a centre-tapped 110 V supply?
HSE describes site tools as cordless or 110 V from a centre-tapped transformer, so the voltage to earth does not exceed 55 V. That is a construction supply, not a US 110 V socket and not a 230 V wall outlet with an adaptor. This page does not give a transformer size. If the site supply is not already there, a competent person designs it.
Does a 240 V title mean a UK 3-pin plug is fitted?
No. Electrical Safety First expects a UK 3-pin plug, and a 240 V title is the voltage claim. The GA9020/2 description does not say BS 1363. UK reviews of that ASIN report a fitted Euro two-pin plug, including on a replacement. You check the plug that arrives. You do not infer it from the voltage in the title or from a photo of a yellow lead.
What did UK reviewers of the GA9020/2 say about the plug?
They said a Euro two-pin plug was fitted and that the description had not said so. The comment appears on more than one UK delivery, including a replacement. That is the limit on using this 240 V listing as a ready-for-a-UK-socket tool. The same reviews still describe it cutting paving and concrete once the supply was sorted.
