How to use a cordless tool set: clutch, then guard

Updated: 17 October 2026

Do not drive the first screw at full speed. Before you use a cordless tool set, identify each body, match batteries to chargers, and test controls without load. The clutch, direction slider and chuck prevent mistakes only when set correctly, while a saw or grinder needs its own guard and blade. This guide covers first use at home. Before the first screw

Lay out the tools, packs, charger, guards, handles and instructions, then compare them with the included-components list. QQ CAT's bullets promise four batteries while its components field says only a case, and DEKO's field does not explicitly name a charger. If a safety part is missing, contact the seller rather than improvising. Charge each lithium-ion pack only on the charger specified for it. A new pack may arrive partly discharged, and a hot pack should cool before charging. Place the charger on a stable, dry and ventilated surface. Do not assume that a pack fits safely because its rails can be forced together. With the pack off, inspect the chuck, body and terminals for damage. Attach required handles and guards before mounting an accessory, then insert the pack only after assembly. If the tool starts unexpectedly, smells burnt or has damaged terminals, stop using it. The cordless tool set buying guide explains why pack count and platform matter.

Clutch, gear and reverse

For screwdriving, select the slow gear and begin on a low clutch number. The clutch limits torque and may click or rattle when the selected resistance is reached; that behaviour is different from a damaged chuck. Increase the setting gradually until the screw sits correctly without burying its head. Drill mode normally bypasses the slip clutch, so starting there can strip a screw or damage a soft workpiece. Use numbered clutch settings for screws, drill mode for drilling and hammer mode only with a suitable bit. Do not hammer screws, and stop the motor fully before changing gear. Test forward and reverse with no bit touching the work. Run the trigger briefly in each direction, then let the motor stop before moving the direction slider. One QQ CAT reviewer says the impact tool moved in only one direction and could not undo fasteners, so find that fault before you load a bolt.

Chuck, bits and heads that will not come off

Remove the battery or lock the trigger before touching the chuck. Insert the bit centrally, tighten it as instructed and run briefly without load to check for wobble. A poorly seated or incorrectly sized bit can work loose and damage the fastener. Stop immediately if the chuck will not tighten, loosens repeatedly or has a broken retaining screw. TEENO reviews include a snapped chuck screw and a chuck that seized after about five months. Keep the failed parts and contact the seller rather than forcing the trigger. Interchangeable heads need the same restraint. Disconnect the battery, release the manufacturer's latch and keep the head aligned as you remove it. One TEENO owner reported using a hammer to free a jammed head. That account is a warning: if normal release pressure does not work, stop and use the returns process.

Saw and grinder, then stop

A grinder must have the correct guard and side handle fitted before use. Check that the disc diameter and speed rating match the exact tool: the JCB listing names a 115 mm grinder, while QQ CAT's bullets name 125 mm. Do not move a disc between them just because the centre hole appears to fit. Inspect the disc for chips or cracks, and position the guard between you and the wheel. Wear suitable eye protection. Hearing protection may be necessary for cutting and grinding. HSE workplace exposure values are not a promise of unlimited household use. Take breaks and stop if vibration changes abruptly. For any saw, support the work and keep the cutting path clear of cables, pipes and your free hand. Fit only the specified blade and remove the battery before adjustments. Call a competent professional for unknown wiring, structural alterations, gas, significant plumbing or unidentified material. The combo kit or drill set guide helps check whether the kit shape was suitable.

Common questions

Should I charge the battery before the first use?
Follow the pack and charger instructions; new lithium-ion packs may not arrive fully charged. Use only the specified charger, allow a hot battery to cool and charge on a dry, ventilated surface. Do not copy another brand's LED meanings because indicators differ between chargers.
Which clutch setting should I start with?
Start low in the slow gear when driving screws, then increase the clutch one step at a time until the screw seats correctly. The correct number depends on the tool, screw and material. Drill mode bypasses the clutch and is not the safe default for screwdriving.
How do I test reverse?
With no load on the tool, run it briefly forward, release the trigger and wait for a complete stop. Move the direction selector and run it briefly in reverse. If it does not change direction, do not put it on a fastener; arrange support or a return.
What should I do if a head is stuck?
Remove the battery and follow the manufacturer's release sequence with the head correctly aligned. Do not strike it with a hammer or use the motor to shake it free. If ordinary hand pressure fails, stop before damaging the connector and contact the seller or service provider.
Can I use any grinder disc from the box?
No. Match the disc diameter, bore, type and maximum speed to the exact grinder and task. The kits compared here include different stated grinder sizes. Fit the correct guard and handle, inspect the disc, and never use a cracked or unidentified wheel.
When should I stop and call a professional?
Stop for unknown electrical wiring, structural work, gas, significant plumbing or any material that may require specialist control. Also stop when a battery swells, a tool smells burnt, a chuck or guard is damaged, or repeated overheating and unusual vibration suggest a fault.
