Die grinder vs angle grinder

Updated: 22 October 2026

Amazon.co.uk results for a die grinder also throw up 115 mm angle grinders. Die grinder vs angle grinder is what the tool is holding, and whether that shape can see the metal. Use a die grinder where a disc cannot line up. Use a guarded angle grinder for sheet or a broad face. The tools in our [cordless die grinder comparison](/hub/tools/cordless-die-grinder) are collet tools, not angle grinders with the guard left off. Peter F. updated this page on 22 October 2026. What each tool is holding

An angle grinder holds a 115 mm or 125 mm disc behind a guard, with flanges. Electrical Safety First says keep the guard on, use both hands, and send sparks away from anything that can burn. Take the battery off before you change the wheel. A mains charger needs a UK 3-pin plug. A die grinder holds a burr or a small drum in a collet. These listings describe neither a guard nor flanges, so a cutting disc does not move across. A carbide burr still removes metal. It does not slit a sheet the way a guarded cutting disc does. Toolstation’s no-cutting line means that disc job.

When the disc is the wrong shape

The disc is the wrong shape when the guard hits the panel before the abrasive touches the spot. A wheel arch, a port and a weld in a corner are the usual cases. Norton’s UK rust note says a large disc clears a face you can see, and a die grinder is for the edge that disc cannot reach. The shank still has to fit. YEARTOP is the only right-angle body here. Its two UK reviews, both 5.0, describe wheel-arch rust with 1/4 inch drums. Two reviews are a thin sample. C12RT-0 reviews describe a tight vehicle gap and weld remains taken off with a carbide burr. It is 1/8 inch, not a 6 mm burr and not a 115 mm disc.

When you still want the angle grinder

Keep the angle grinder for a cut, a broad face, or a seam you can see without the disc fouling. A 115 mm or 125 mm disc removes metal across a width a burr only stripes. Norton’s weld guidance starts with a flap or conditioning disc, then a finer finish, rather than a carbide burr through the middle of the bead. Leave the guard on. A right-angle die grinder is still a collet tool. YEARTOP turns a corner and holds a 1/4 inch shank. Norton calls a cut-off wheel on a die grinder dangerous, because there is nowhere to guard that wheel. Collet and head shape are on the cordless die grinder buying guide.

A compact rotary tool is a third thing

A Dremel-class tool, or the Milwaukee C12RT-0, is not a small angle grinder and not a 6 mm die grinder. Where a collet is stated it is 1/8 inch. The Lite 7760 review theme is cut-out if you press, which is not a measured torque, and a 3.6 V tool will not clear a rusty arch. The C12RT-0 can reach a gap a disc cannot see. It still will not take a 6 mm burr or a grinding disc. Wear eye and hearing protection on both tools. Sparks from a disc travel further than swarf from a burr. Stop if the part is structural, the coating is unknown, or the dust might be silica. These listings publish no noise figure.

Common questions

When is an angle grinder the wrong shape?
It is the wrong shape when the guard or the disc hits the panel before the abrasive touches the edge. A wheel arch, a port and a corner weld are the usual cases. Norton points to a die grinder there. If the guard clears, the angle grinder remains the tool for the cut or the broad face.
Can a die grinder cut sheet the way a 115 mm or 125 mm disc can?
No. A carbide burr removes metal along a line or an edge. It does not slit a panel the way a guarded cutting disc does, and it has no flanges or guard for that disc. Keep the 115 mm or 125 mm wheel on an angle grinder, with the guard on. Norton treats a cut-off wheel on a die grinder as a dangerous combination.
Is a right-angle die grinder the same thing as an angle grinder?
No. A right-angle die grinder turns the collet so a burr can meet a face you cannot line up with. An angle grinder turns a guarded disc. YEARTOP is the only right-angle body in this set, with a stated 1/4 inch collet, and its two reviews are wheel-arch rust with drums, not disc cutting. Leave the angle-grinder guard in place.
Which tool is for a weld you can see, and which is for a weld in a corner?
Use a guarded angle grinder and a flap or conditioning disc for a seam you can see, which is the order Norton describes. Use a die grinder when the weld remain sits in a corner the disc cannot enter, and only with a shank that fits. C12RT-0 reviews describe a carbide burr in a tight vehicle gap. That is 1/8 inch, not a reason to grind out a weld that holds the structure.
Do both tools need eye and hearing protection?
Yes. A burr throws chips and a disc throws sparks. Hearing protection belongs on for both, including a short job. Electrical Safety First also wants both hands on an angle grinder, the correct disc, and the battery off before a wheel change. These die-grinder listings do not publish a noise figure. At work, noise assessment is a separate duty.
If you only own a Dremel-class rotary tool, is that an angle-grinder substitute?
No. A Dremel-class tool is a third format: a small collet, light torque, and reviews that mention cut-out under pressure on the Lite 7760. It will not cut sheet the way a 115 mm disc does. The C12RT-0 can reach a gap an angle grinder cannot, and it remains a 1/8 inch rotary tool that still needs an M12 pack. For a cut or a broad face, get a guarded angle grinder.
