How to use a cable stripper machine safely at home

Updated: 17 October 2026

Your first metre of cable should be a setup piece, not the start of a production run. Learning how to use a cable stripper machine means controlling three things before you add speed: the cable must be dead, the base must not move and the blade must only score the insulation. Our [cable peeling machine comparison](/hub/tools/cable-peeling-machine) covers the available bench tools; this guide starts once one is on your workbench. Use the hand crank for the first cut, even if you intend to attach a drill later. A shallow, centred score can be deepened, whereas a damaged conductor or rounded drive bolt cannot be undone. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the cable touches the blade

Only process cable that has been removed from service and identified as dead. These listings do not state voltage ratings, and a bench stripper is not an isolation device. Do not feed cable that remains connected, disappears into a wall or could be energised from another source. If there is any doubt, stop and ask a competent electrician to identify and isolate it. Straighten the first section and remove tight kinks, mud and loose debris. Curved cable pushes sideways against a single blade. Unknown industrial cable, armoured construction or a possible lead covering needs specialist handling. Screw or bolt the machine to a solid bench, or fix it to a board that can be clamped down. Reviews of CREWORKS and LILOOVKE point towards stable mounting and straight cable. Gloves do not replace a fixed base and a correctly set blade.

Set the depth on a short scrap piece

Choose the closest feed, or adjust the roller so the cable is supported without being crushed. Wind the blade down until it just contacts the insulation, then back off if the cable binds. Feed a short offcut by hand and inspect the score before you go further. You want a continuous line through most of the sheath without cutting strands or marking the conductor. If insulation remains joined, deepen the blade in small steps on the same type of scrap. Bright copper scoring, flattened strands or swarf from the conductor means the setting is already too deep. Raise the blade and start on a fresh test piece. A 2.5 mm² marking is not a 2.5 mm outside diameter. Flat twin and earth may not sit in a round groove, and very thin round wire can wander. If setup keeps failing, the feed layout may be wrong. The single-blade versus multi-channel guide separates that from a depth mistake.

Decide between the handle and a drill

The hand crank shows a jam immediately and lets you see whether the blade follows the line. Keep it for short pieces. One Orifesio reviewer preferred the handle after a drill rounded the crank bolt. Attach a drill only after a clean hand-fed test cut. Use a low speed and keep the cable aligned with the entry. One LILOOVKE reviewer used an 18 V drill on speed 1. That is an owner example, not a speed for every machine, because drive geometry and torque differ. The chuck must grip the drive without wobble. HYEPNED alone states a chuck of at least 10 mm, so do not copy that size to another brand. Keep fingers, sleeves and gloves clear of the shaft, blade and rollers. If the drive rounds, chatters or throws the cable sideways, release the trigger.

Fix slipping, scoring or chewed insulation

If the cable walks off the blade, stop and check alignment. The base should not have shifted, the feed should be centred and the first metre should be reasonably straight. Reviews report slipping below about 4 mm on single-blade machines, even when the title claims a lower minimum. An off-centre score can mean a misaligned or dull blade. Isolate the drill and remove the cable first. Follow the maker’s blade procedure and use the specified part. Do not remove a guard or deepen the cut until the conductor is trapped. A new blade will not hold flat cable in a round groove. Chewed insulation usually means too much depth, a blunt edge, too much speed or the wrong feed. Change one factor and retest on a short piece. Stop if the cable keeps buckling, the frame cracks or the drive shaft is damaged. Where an employee uses the tool, HSE PUWER guidance requires instruction and equipment kept in a safe condition. Do not burn insulation. The scrap copper cable guide covers when stripping is worth doing for sale.

Common questions

Do I have to bolt the stripper down?
You should secure it to a solid bench or to a board that is firmly clamped. An unsecured machine can rotate or slide as the cable resists the blade, moving the cut towards the conductor or your hand. Stable mounting is part of setup, not an optional upgrade for drill use.
How deep should the blade go on the first pass?
Set it only deep enough to score the outside of the insulation on a short scrap piece. Inspect that line, then deepen in small steps until the sheath separates without visible marks on the copper. There is no universal depth because insulation thickness and cable construction vary.
Should I start with the hand crank or a drill?
Start with the hand crank. It gives better feedback while you establish feed position and blade depth. Attach a drill at low speed only after a clean test cut, and stop if the shaft slips, the bolt rounds or the cable begins moving sideways.
Why does the cable jump out of the groove?
The usual causes are a curved cable, loose mounting, poor centring or a feed too large for the cable. Very thin or flat cable may lack support even after adjustment. Straighten a test section and reset it. If it still wanders, the machine layout is probably unsuitable.
Can I strip cable that is still in a wall?
No. A scrap cable stripper should only receive removed cable that has been identified and isolated as dead. Cable in a wall may remain connected or be energised from another circuit. Ask a competent electrician to make it safe rather than using the blade as a test.
When should I stop and get professional help?
Stop if the cable may be live, its construction is unknown, it may have a lead sheath, or the machine is damaged. In a workplace, stop after an injury and follow the employer’s reporting and equipment-safety procedure. Do not improvise around guards, blades or electrical uncertainty.
