Cable stripping machine buying guide for UK buyers

Updated: 17 October 2026

A box of cable offcuts can make a £25 bench stripper look like an obvious purchase, but the largest number in the product title is rarely the most useful buying clue. This cable stripping machine buying guide explains how to choose by cable shape, outside diameter, feed layout and credible review evidence. Start with our [cable peeling machine comparison](/hub/tools/cable-peeling-machine) if you want the current amazon.co.uk listings side by side. If you first establish what is actually in your scrap bin, you can avoid paying for six channels you will not use, or discovering that an adjustable 1–25 mm machine cannot hold thin, flat cable securely. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

The inexpensive machines in this comparison are hand-cranked bench tools. A blade scores the insulation lengthways while a roller or shaped feed supports the cable, and you then pull the sheath away from the conductor. They are not Jokari-style pliers for cable ends, and they are not automatic 370 W machines. Drill powered in a title can sound more complete than it is. Every model here expects you to provide the drill, and the base still has to be fixed to a bench or board. HYEPNED is the only listing that specifies a chuck of at least 10 mm. The first choice is not manual versus electric. It is one adjustable blade or several fixed channels.

One adjustable blade or several fixed holes

A single-blade machine generally costs about £22–£29 in this set. You set the blade and roller gap for the cable in front of you, which suits offcuts of one round size. Similar thick singles can be set once, which may be cheaper than extra channels. Multi-channel tools cost roughly £37–£41. Their holes cover several outside diameters, commonly a claimed span around 3–17 mm, so mixed round offcuts move to the nearest feed. The premium buys convenience and support, not unlimited capacity. Flat twin and earth is the awkward case: a round hole may not support it evenly, and a single blade can let thin cable walk sideways. The single-blade versus multi-channel guide sets out that trade-off.

Read the millimetre claim correctly

A cable marked 2.5 mm² is labelled by conductor cross-sectional area, not by outside diameter. A 1–25 mm machine claim normally refers to the size that enters the feed. Measure the complete insulated cable across its widest point, and note whether it is round, oval or flat. Treat the stated range as a screening claim. Single-blade reviews report slipping below about 4 mm, and at least one review disputes a full 25 mm claim. Alignment, insulation hardness and shape all change the result. A flat cable is not the same job as a round cable under the same headline maximum. Keep a short offcut, and prefer reviews of a size close to yours.

Match price to workload and evidence

The £22–£29 band is the experiment for repeated round cable if you will adjust the feed. The £37–£41 band suits mixed round diameters where fewer resets justify about £15 more. A motorised machine around £380–£400 is a separate budget. Robert Dyas listed a T-Mech automatic machine at £395.99, which shows the jump from occasional offcuts to regular throughput. A 5.0 from two ratings is weak beside hundreds or thousands of ratings. Orifesio B0DWW5VQQ3 had 4.6 from 254 at about £40.99. CREWORKS B0FGVMQQNS had 4.1 from 3,982 at about £28.49. Neither figure proves a fit for your cable. LILOOVKE was about £21.99 with 3.9 from 1,247, with more trouble on thin and flat cable. Named picks are in the best cable stripper machine guide. If the pile is mainly thin domestic cable, read the scrap copper cable guide before you buy.

Common questions

What does 1–25 mm mean if my cable is 2.5 mm²?
The figures describe different things. The cable’s 2.5 mm² marking is the cross-sectional area of a conductor, whereas the machine range usually refers to the outside size entering the feed. Measure the complete insulated cable rather than matching 2.5 to the machine title.
Do I need six holes or one adjustable blade?
Choose one adjustable blade for repeated round cable of broadly one size and a lower initial cost. Several fixed holes are more convenient for mixed round diameters within the available channels. Thin flat twin and earth can frustrate both layouts, so cable shape matters as much as range.
Will a drill be included?
No machine in the researched set should be bought on that assumption. The listings expect you to supply the drill, and only HYEPNED explicitly states a chuck of at least 10 mm. Check the precise listing and drive fitting before ordering.
Why might a machine not accept its advertised maximum?
Headline ranges do not capture cable shape, stiffness, feed clearance or blade alignment. A product may physically admit a large cable yet fail to support and cut it cleanly. Look for reviews involving a cable close to your measured outside dimensions and keep a test piece.
Are bench machines the same as wire-stripping pliers?
No. Handheld pliers and Jokari-style tools normally prepare cable ends for electrical work. These bench machines score insulation along scrap cable so the conductor can be recovered over a longer length. The tasks overlap in name, not in handling or intended throughput.
When should I consider a motorised machine?
Consider the much higher budget only when cable volume and frequency make hand feeding a genuine bottleneck. Occasional shed piles rarely justify moving from roughly £22–£41 to about £380–£400. Work out the usable cable volume and disposal value before treating speed as a saving.
