Wago connectors buying guide: choosing the right 221

Updated: 17 October 2026

Open a ceiling rose or junction box and the first question is not which orange lever pack costs least. It is how many conductors must be joined, what size and type they are, and whether the connector is the genuine model named by the installation instructions. This Wago connectors buying guide puts those decisions in a practical order for UK shoppers. You can compare the captured packs and amazon.co.uk prices on our [Wago connectors comparison](/hub/tool-accessories/wago-connectors), then use this guide to decide which shape belongs on your shortlist. Choose the port count and conductor window before comparing pack size or price. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

The familiar Wago 221 family includes several shapes that solve different connection problems. A 221-412 has two ports, a 221-413 has three, and a 221-415 has five. Each port takes one conductor. Do not count the levers and assume that two wires can share one opening. The inline 221-2411 is different. Its conductors enter from opposite ends, making it useful for a straight repair or extension where a side-by-side body would be awkward. It does not turn into a three-way branch simply because it belongs to the 221 family. In this comparison, the genuine mixed 25-pack contains ten two-port, ten three-port and five five-port connectors. The larger selection case contains 40, 30 and 15 respectively. A repeated lighting job dominated by three-way joints may therefore be better served by the 50-pack of 221-413. Our best Wago 221 connectors guide explains the smaller genuine-pack choices.

Put cable size before brand and price

The genuine 221-412, 221-413 and 221-415 range covered by Wago GB accepts fine-stranded conductors from 0.14 to 4 mm² and solid conductors from 0.2 to 4 mm². The captured 221-413 listing gives 32 A and 450 V, but that rating is not permission to ignore the circuit, cable, enclosure or installation method. Connector compatibility begins with conductor type and cross-sectional area. A 6 mm² cooker conductor does not belong in the ordinary 4 mm² 221 body. Wago has a separate larger-conductor family, but none of the twelve listings in this comparison is that family. A 10 mm² job is an immediate stop rather than a reason to force the lever. Strip length belongs to the exact product. Genuine compact 221 documentation states 11 mm. Several compatible kits in this set print 9–10 mm, while one states 10 mm. The step-by-step sequence is covered in how to use Wago connectors.

Genuine Wago or a compatible lever kit

Six captured listings use Wago as the brand, while the other six are Preciva, Aigreat, Flintronic, XALXMAW, Lpluziyyds and ZRUIDA. Orange levers and a clear body describe an appearance, not a manufacturer. If a title uses a broad phrase such as Wago type, or appears in a Wago search, check the brand field and model. A compatible connector may still have stated ratings, but it should be assessed as its own product rather than assumed to inherit Wago documentation. Quantity alone makes a large kit look inexpensive, but review signals matter: the Flintronic kit includes repeated complaints about snapped levers and weak grip, and Preciva reviews include grip concerns. A loose lever connector is not the complete maintenance-free accessory, and you cannot substitute a lookalike into a box whose instructions name particular Wago models while keeping that claim. For any joint that will become inaccessible, read our Wago connector junction box guide before choosing the connector.

Which pack matches the job

Buy a single-model pack when the work is predictable. Fifty 221-413 connectors suit repeated three-conductor joints. The ten-pack keeps the initial spend and leftovers down when you only need a few genuine three-port connectors. Choose an assortment when the number of conductors varies. The genuine 25-piece pocket pack covers the three common port counts for £10.38, although it includes only five 221-415 bodies. The £35.99 selection case offers 85 genuine connectors and organised storage, which is useful for regular work but excessive for one ceiling light. An inline repair points instead towards the 221-2411 ten-pack, because port direction is more important than assortment size.

Common questions

Do I need a two-port or three-port Wago for a ceiling light?
Count the conductors that must be electrically common, not the number of cables entering the ceiling. Use one conductor per port. A simple one-to-one connection needs two ports; a supply, onward feed and fitting conductor grouped together need three. Ceiling-rose wiring can contain separate permanent-live, switched-live and neutral groups, so stop if you cannot identify them reliably.
Will 2.5 mm² twin and earth fit a Wago 221?
The copper conductors are within the published size window for the genuine 4 mm² 221-412, 221-413 and 221-415 family. That does not make every 221 suitable for every circuit or enclosure. Check the exact model, conductor material, current requirement and installation design rather than relying on cable size alone.
Can I use an ordinary 221 connector on 6 mm² cooker cable?
Not the ordinary 4 mm² models discussed here. Wago offers a separate larger-conductor family, but it is not represented among these twelve listings. Do not trim strands or force a 6 mm² conductor into a smaller body. Use the correctly specified product and seek competent advice for cooker-circuit work.
Are all orange lever connectors genuine Wago?
No. Half of the listings in this comparison are other brands. Check the brand and model fields, packaging and dependable manufacturer documentation. A compatible connector should be judged by its own ratings and instructions, not by visual similarity to a Wago 221.
Do Wago connectors still need a junction box?
Yes, the connector is not the finished enclosure. A reachable joint can sit in a suitable accessible box. An inaccessible joint needs a specifically marked maintenance-free accessory and the exact connectors and installation method named by its instructions; a loose 221 or an unlisted compatible copy does not establish that status.
