Electrician tool kit buying guide

Updated: October 2026

An electrician tool kit buying guide should help you read past the large piece count on the lid. For UK sockets and switches, the useful questions are whether the insulation claim is specific, whether the driver profiles match the screws, and whether the case contains the pliers you will actually use. The eight sets in our [electrician tool kit comparison](/hub/tool-accessories/electrician-tool-kit) range from a £19.95 interchangeable screwdriver set to a £123.51 maintenance kit, so they are not substitutes simply because each title mentions electricians. This guide explains the checks to make before paying. Safe isolation and proving dead remain separate from the choice of hand tools. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Decide whether you need insulated screwdrivers, a mixed hand-tool case or a portable maintenance kit. A screwdriver set will not cut or strip cable. A mixed case trades some driver choice for pliers, cutters or a stripper. Wera's Kraftform Kompakt W1 adds a ratchet, sockets and a wrench, and lists no electrician's pliers. A hand-tool kit is not a safe-isolation kit. A neon screwdriver does not replace a two-pole voltage indicator and proving unit. GS38 addresses test equipment. It does not turn a screwdriver tester into a way to prove every conductor dead. Read how to use electrician tools safely before opening a fitting.

Five checks to make in order

First, inspect the insulation claim. BS EN IEC 60900:2018 covers hand tools for live working up to 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC for skilled users. VDE is a certification mark rather than the name of a separate UK law. A page that names IEC 60900 or makes a clear VDE claim gives you more to verify than the bare word insulated. The ArmaKit title names IEC 60900. PaulStore's bullets say insulated but name neither IEC 60900 nor VDE. Second, check every driver profile. Pozidriv and Phillips are not interchangeable, and the wrong tip is more likely to slip or damage the screw. Pozidriv is common on UK fittings, so PZ1 and PZ2 can matter more than another unusual bit. Tolsen lists Pozi, Phillips, slotted and Torx. The BILITOOLS and FOURROBBER mixed sets list slotted and Phillips but no Pozidriv, while PaulStore lists two PH1 drivers and no PH2. Third, decide which pliers are necessary. Side cutters cut conductors, long-nose pliers help in confined boxes, combination pliers grip and cut, and water-pump pliers suit larger fittings. ArmaKit lists long-nose and combination pliers, side cutters and a separate stripper. FOURROBBER's title mentions a wire stripper, but one UK reviewer says stripping is part of the pliers rather than a separate tool. Fourth, treat the tester as its own purchase. A voltage test screwdriver is an accessory, not a two-pole proving arrangement. Fifth, a weak hinge can make a case frustrating without proving the steel is poor, and a smart case does not validate the insulation. For certification language, see VDE or IEC 60900.

How piece counts distort the comparison

A piece count has no consistent unit across these listings. A double-ended blade may be one piece while supplying two tips, and a roll of tape may count alongside a pair of pliers. The TOOLUTION package lists 24 tips on 12 blades, one handle and one tester. It still contains no pliers and lists no Pozidriv. Conflicting counts are a stronger warning. The BILITOOLS B0DC59NP5Z title calls the product a nine-piece set, while its bullet and unit count say seven: two slotted drivers, two Phillips drivers, a test screwdriver, combination pliers and diagonal cutters. Base the decision on that explicit list unless the current seller clarifies the discrepancy.

Know what belongs on another page

This checklist helps you reject a poorly matched listing. It does not select one universal winner. If you want conditional recommendations from the eight products, use the best electrician tool kit guide. Its choices distinguish a low-cost Pozidriv screwdriver set from a mixed set with a named standard and from Wera's maintenance case. Buying insulated tools does not expand the electrical work you can safely or legally undertake. Electrical Safety First advises DIYers to stop when unsure and identifies work such as a new circuit and bathroom work as jobs involving Part P requirements and a registered competent person. If a job depends on working live, if you cannot identify and secure the isolator, or if you do not have suitable equipment to prove dead, the missing item is not another screwdriver.

Common questions

What should be in an electrician tool kit for UK fittings?
For many routine tasks, useful contents include correctly sized slotted and Pozidriv drivers, side cutters, long-nose or combination pliers and an appropriate stripping tool. The exact set depends on the work. Suitable safe-isolation test equipment is a separate requirement and should not be assumed merely because a case includes a neon screwdriver.
Is a higher piece count better?
No. Count working functions instead. One handle with 12 double-ended blades may be described as a 26-piece package, while a smaller mixed set may include cutters and combination pliers. Check the contents line, driver sizes and whether accessories such as tape are included in the headline number.
Does 1,000 V in a title mean IEC 60900?
Not by itself. Look for the standard number, relevant marking and manufacturer information on the tool and packaging. A listing claim is useful evidence of what the seller promises, but it is not a physical inspection or an independent test by this site.
Why does Pozidriv matter?
Pozidriv screws are common on UK electrical accessories. A Phillips tip can appear to fit, yet its geometry differs and it may slip or damage the recess under torque. Check for PZ1 and PZ2 where your fittings require them rather than assuming a cross-head covers both systems.
Is the included tester enough to prove dead?
Do not assume so. The sets that list testers describe test screwdrivers or a bulb tester, not a complete two-pole proving arrangement. GS38 and safe-isolation guidance distinguish proper voltage indication from single-pole pens and non-contact devices. Buy the indicator separately.
When should I stop shopping and call an electrician?
Stop when you are unsure of the job's scope, cannot isolate and secure the supply, cannot prove every relevant conductor dead, or are considering notifiable work such as a new circuit. Insulated hand tools reduce one class of risk. They do not create competence or permission.
