How to use a galvanised ice tub

Updated: October 2026

The tub is on the patio, the bottles are still in the kitchen, and the first mistake is to tip in ice before you know the seam holds. A galvanised ice tub fails quietly: a weep at the joint, meltwater left overnight, and a coating put away wet. This is the first-use sequence for a drinks tub you own, or one from the [zinc tub comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/zinc-tub). It does not rank the nine listings. The Products Compared editorial team wrote the steps from those amazon.co.uk captures and public UK care notes on 16 October 2026. There was no timed ice trial. Test the tub before the party

Set the empty tub on a dry floor and fill it with tap water to the level you expect to use. Walk around the seam, the base, and the handle rivets. A sound tub stays dry underneath. A bad one shows a dark line or a drip before you spend money on ice. Several UK reviews of the LIVIVO 24 litre tub, at £12.99, say it held ice and drinks with no leak. One UK review reports a slight seep that stopped after a silicone bead on the seam. That bead is one owner’s report, not a repair this page is selling. One UK review of the galvanised pan tub, at £44.99, says it leaked on the first fill. That pan is a garden listing, and a weep there means it is the wrong vessel for bottles. One UK reviewer of the YQGQSUAK 15 litre pair filled both and reported no leaks. That is one test on a listing with 10 reviews. Your water test is still the one that counts. If the floor is wet, empty it and decide whether you are returning it under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or living with a liner. Do not fix a drinks tub by calling it a pond.

Ice, bottles, and meltwater

Once the water test is clean, empty that water, dry the inside, and build the drinks fill. Put ice in, then closed bottles and cans. The metal is not a stated food-contact surface on any listing in this file. Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, kept in UK law, is the food-contact framework, and the Food Standards Agency treats kitchenware as in scope. None of these tubs states an approval. Keep the drink inside the bottle, or use a liner you trust, and do not pour punch straight onto the zinc. The Drinking Water Inspectorate’s advice on old galvanised cisterns is the household version of the same limit: do not store drinking water in a party tub. Ice against the metal is what these tubs are sold for. What you cannot claim is a number of hours. The Sibosen bullets talk about insulation that prevents melting for several hours, and no insulation figure is printed. Other brands’ double-walled buckets are a different product. Empty the meltwater when the party is over, not on the next afternoon. Weight arrives with the ice. The YQGQSUAK pair tells you not to lift the tubs fully loaded. A full 24 litre LIVIVO is still a two-person lift on steps or wet grass. Slide it, or empty some water, rather than proving the handle.

Wash, dry, and store

Hand wash the tub with mild soap and water. Do not put it in a dishwasher. Galvanised catering tubs from UK trade shops are sold with that limit, and these sheet tubs give you no reason to be rougher. Rinse the soap off. Then dry the inside, the rim, and the seams with a clean cloth until the metal is not sitting in a film of water. A coating that looks bright, as one UK reviewer said of the YQGQSUAK pair, is not a promise that it will not mark if you shut it away wet. Store the tub dry, upside down if you have the space, so rain and a mop bucket cannot refill it in a shed. One LIVIVO buyer received a dented tub. A dent on a seam is a reason to repeat the water test. Dry every tub in a four-pack. Scoops are not in every listing, so do not expect them in a LIVIVO box.

What this routine does not cover

This sequence will not tell you which tub to buy, and it will not make a drilled planter hold ice. Holes and a watertight drinks job cancel each other, which is the point of zinc tub drinks or planter. It will not make the tub food-safe, lead-free, or certified to BS EN ISO 1461. It will not tell you that ice lasts for a wedding reception. If you want a timed cooler, you are shopping for a different product than these open sheet tubs. It also does not cover children and garden water. A tub you have just proved watertight is, in a garden, a container of water. Empty it and turn it over when the day is finished. Depth, grilles, and what to do if a child has been under the water belong on zinc tub garden pond safety. Call 999 if a child has been submerged, and get medical advice even if the child looks well. That line is RoSPA’s. If the seam weeps on a brand-new tub and a liner is not acceptable, stop using it for drinks and use your rights as a buyer rather than a tube of sealant as the plan.

Common questions

Do I fill it with ice before I know it holds water?
No. Fill it with tap water on a dry floor first and look at the seam and the base. Ice hides a weep and wastes the bag. Several LIVIVO reviews report no leak, and one reports a seep. Your tub still needs its own test.
Can I put ice straight against the metal?
Yes for chilling closed bottles and cans. That is the use these drink rows are sold for. Do not read it as a food-contact approval, and do not expect a printed number of hours. No insulation figure is given on these listings.
Should drinks sit in the tub without bottles or a liner?
Keep drinks in bottles or use a liner. None of the nine listings states a food-contact approval. The Food Standards Agency treats kitchenware as part of that framework. Pouring an open drink onto the metal is a step these pages do not support.
How long can meltwater stay in it?
Empty it when you are done, then dry the metal. Some UK trade tubs, which are not these ASINs, warn about staining if water sits for a long time. That clock is not printed on the nine listings here, so the rule you can actually follow is to empty and dry rather than to time a slogan.
Is it dishwasher safe?
No. Hand wash it, rinse it, and dry it with a cloth. A dishwasher cycle is how trade galvanised tubs get ruled out, and these thinner sheet tubs are not a harder-wearing exception.
Can I carry it once it is full of ice?
Not as a one-hand lift. The YQGQSUAK pair says not to lift the tubs fully loaded. A 24 litre tub is heavy once ice and meltwater are in it. Empty some water, or carry it between two people.
What if a seam weeps on the first fill?
Stop and decide whether the tub goes back. One LIVIVO reviewer stopped a slight seep with a silicone bead. That is a single report, not a method to rely on. A drinks tub that weeps is the wrong tub.
