115 V pool pump on UK mains

Updated: October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk, the title says 1 hp or 1.5 hp, and the price is over £250. A 115 V pool pump on UK mains is easy to miss because the storefront looks British and the plug in the photograph might not. UK mains are about 230 V at 50 Hz. If the listing says 115 V or 120 V, or UK reviews say the plug is American, do not buy it for a UK socket. A pin adaptor does not change the voltage. The seven listings are on the [Wiltec pool pump](/hub/swimming-pools/wiltec-pool-pump) comparison. This page is the safety check only. It does not size the pump in litres, and it does not tell you which hose goes where. These are stored listings, not a lab test. What the plug has to be

A pump you plug into a UK wall needs a supply of about 230 V at 50 Hz and a BS 1363 plug. That is the ordinary UK socket, with a fuse in the plug. The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, regulation 35, say that a flex intended for a BS 1363 socket must have a correctly fitted standard plug, or a non-UK plug used with a compatible conversion plug that carries a BS 1362 fuse. Read that as a rule about the plug assembly. It is not permission to run a 115 V motor through a fused adaptor, and it does not change 115 V into 230 V. A travel adaptor only lets the pins enter the socket. The voltage stays about 230 V, so a motor wound for 115 V or about 120 V is on the wrong supply. UK reviews of the Pavel say the adaptor will not help. A star rating is not a conformity mark. If the label does not say 220–240 V, stop before horsepower. The which kept pump is for whom page names each ASIN.

The 115 V listings in this set

The Vidapool SPR150-LV prints 115 V and 1.5 hp at about £263.01, with 7,350 gallons per hour stated. One US review and no UK review do not make 115 V usable on a UK socket. The Aquastrong PSP100T-LV, ASIN B0DK35BZ4T, prints 115 V and 1 hp at about £252.46, with a timer from 2 to 24 hours. The star line is 4.2 from 302 reviews. None of the first 50 saved reviews is marked United Kingdom, and several describe other Aquastrong pumps. A review of some other Aquastrong on 220 V does not rewire this one. The Pavel, ASIN B0DWMPW1GR, at about £98.74, leaves voltage off the specification table. Four UK reviews describe a US pump at about 120 V and 60 Hz, with a metal US plug, and they say an adaptor will not help. One buyer describes an Amazon refund. Do not buy it for a UK socket because the storefront is amazon.co.uk. The GJXJY at about £61.99 and the generic 300 gal/h set at about £73.99 also leave voltage blank. A blank line is not evidence of 230 V. Only the Bestway 58381 and the Bestway 58389GB print 220–240 V in this set, at 16 W and 86 W.

RCD and distance

A 220–240 V cartridge pump that you do plug in still needs the protection the manuals state. Bestway’s storable-pool guidance, as used for this category, calls for an RCD that does not exceed 30 mA, a plug at least 3.50 m from the pool, no extension cord, and the pump switched off while anyone is in the water. The 3.50 m figure is from those manuals. It is not a measurement taken on these ASINs, and it is not the six-foot line in a US-style GFCI manual. Do not mix the two distances. Electrical Safety First’s garden advice is separate and still applies: outdoor equipment should be on an RCD, and you should test that RCD at least every three months. An RCD does not fix a 115 V pump, and it does not make an extension reel acceptable when the manual says not to use one. Put the pump’s own plug into an RCD-protected socket at least 3.50 m from the water. Do not run it while people are swimming, unplug it before you open the housing, and scrap a damaged cord. The hose order is on the how to set up page, and only after the pump is 220–240 V.

When to stop

Stop if the RCD trips and stays tripped, if the housing smells of burning, if the plug or the flex is hot, or if a breaker opens. Electrical Safety First’s garden guidance says to stop a water pump that misbehaves and to use a registered electrician. A UK review in the Bestway file describes a unit that caught fire during a support test. Treat heat and a burning smell as the end of DIY, not as a reason to try another adaptor. Do not open the consumer unit, and do not alter earthing arrangements, to make a pool pump work. That is electrician work. BS 7671 Section 702 is the wiring rule for basins and swimming pools: zones around the water, and restrictions that include sockets out of the water itself. A seasonal fast-set pool on the grass, fed from an existing outdoor socket on a 30 mA RCD, with the plug at least 3.50 m away and no extension, is the case the storable-pool manuals describe. A permanent pool, a new circuit, a socket closer than the manual allows, or any doubt about the zones is the point where you stop and call a registered electrician. Section 702 is not a weekend project. After that, the pumps you can still consider here are the two Bestways that print 220–240 V. A listing that prints 115 V, or that UK reviews describe as 120 V, stays a skip.

Common questions

Will a UK travel adaptor run a 115 V pump?
No. A pin adaptor lets a non-UK plug meet a BS 1363 socket. Regulation 35 even allows a conversion plug with a BS 1362 fuse as a plug assembly. The voltage stays about 230 V. A 115 V or 120 V motor is still on the wrong supply, and UK reviews of the Pavel say the adaptor will not help.
Which kept ASINs print 115 V?
The Vidapool SPR150-LV prints 115 V and 1.5 hp at about £263.01. The Aquastrong PSP100T-LV prints 115 V and 1 hp at about £252.46. Both are circulation pumps, not cartridge sets. The Pavel table is blank, and four UK reviews say about 120 V. Those three are the skip for a UK socket.
What do UK reviews say about the Pavel plug?
Four UK reviews of B0DWMPW1GR describe an American pump, a metal US plug, about 120 V and 60 Hz. They say an adaptor does not change that, and one buyer describes a refund through Amazon. The specification table on the listing still shows no voltage, so the reviews are the evidence the table omits.
What if the voltage line is missing?
Treat it as unknown, not as 230 V. The GJXJY and the generic 300 gal/h set omit voltage, watts, and dimensions. The Pavel omits voltage and the UK reviews then say 120 V. Buy only when 220–240 V is printed on the listing or on the unit in front of you. In this set, that printed line is the two Bestway cartridge pumps.
How close can the plug be to the pool?
The Bestway storable-pool manuals used here say at least 3.50 m, on an RCD that does not exceed 30 mA, with no extension cord. That distance is from the manuals, not from a test of these ASINs. Do not substitute a US manual’s six-foot figure. If you cannot place the plug that far on an existing RCD socket, stop.
May I use an extension lead?
The same manuals say not to. An extension does not fix a short flex, and a coiled reel can overheat. Use the pump’s own plug in an RCD-protected socket at least 3.50 m from the water. If that socket does not exist, ask a registered electrician rather than running a lead across the garden.
