Swim tether vs counter current: belt, pole, or a jet

Updated: October 2026

You want to swim without a turn every few strokes, and the garden pool is too short. A stationary swim belt, a pole kit, and a counter-current jet are not substitutes. A belt is elastic, and you supply the post. A pole kit adds a plate. A jet moves water and needs mains. These belts are £10.95 to £17.99. Nobody verified a UK installed jet price, so this page will not invent one. The belts are on the [stationary swim belt comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/stationary-swim-belt). The leash pick is on the [best stationary swim belt](/hub/swimming-pools/stationary-swim-belt/sub/stationary-swim-belt-best) page. Shop pages were read in October 2026, with no flow test. Three ways to stay in one place

A tether holds you with elastic in still water. When you ease off, you drift back, and distance is hard to count because the stretch changes. The pull is at the waist, not a current on the whole body. A Germany review of Roaxkois says it is not a full counter-current replacement. A pole kit is still a leash. Poolpro’s Mini, a pole and deck plate at £199.99 including VAT, was out of stock and says pools down to about 12 ft. The Tub Company Mini is £206.99 and states 14 ft. Those floors disagree. You are paying so you are not hunting for a fence post. You are not buying a current. A counter-current system pumps water at you. You stay over one patch of floor if the flow and your speed match. It can be turbulent in a small pool, and it is electrical. The belts in this set have no mains plug. If the pool is 8–12 ft, the small-pool tether page is the belt case.

Shelf prices you can point at

The five belts are £10.95 to £17.99. Alckijy and Roaxkois are £10.95. TUT is £15.99. Boosteady is £17.59. YIWONFU is £17.99. Those are the stored amazon.co.uk prices. Volare’s trainer is £37 for a 2 m cord, and that shop says it is not a flotation device. Swim Tether’s collection shows a travel belt from £38, an ST2 at £194, and an ST3 at £228. A dollar price on a US page is not a UK price, and it is left out here. Poolpro Mini is £199.99 including VAT, out of stock. The Tub Company Original is £299.99, with a stated minimum of 14 ft. The Tub Company Mini is £206.99, also with a 14 ft minimum. A range of about £40–£70 for a Swim Tether Original clashes with £299.99, so do not use it. 1st Direct lists InverJet retrofit units from £2,795 for 160 m³/h, up to £3,995 for 230 m³/h, and EasyStar from £10,744.80. Dolphin prints Aquajet from £165 to £2,680. Those are hardware ranges, not a fitted price. Fitting stays unpriced here.

What changes in the water

On a belt you work against elastic. The first strokes feel light, and the cord firms as it stretches. A Germany review of TUT describes a strong pull and a stroke with no glide. An Italy review of Alckijy says the leash can limit the kick. You will not get a clean distance, and time in the water is not lengths you can compare with a 25 m pool. On a jet you work against flow. If the stream is smooth and the pool is long enough for your body plus the wash, the stroke can include a glide. If the pool is a small frame, the wash hits the far wall and comes back. This comparison did not measure a flow. A pole kit sits with the belt, not with the jet. The pole flexes, and you still have no current. The buying guide is where the 45 inch and 150 cm waist lines meet a slip comment. You can use a belt while you save for a jet. You should not expect the same catch.

Mains, fitting, and the line you stop at

A belt has no plug. You do not call an electrician for Boosteady or Alckijy. You do need a post that will not move, which may be a fence you trust or a plate you bolt through a deck. A deck plate is a builder’s job if you are not confident drilling beside a pool. Poolpro’s Mini includes that plate. The £11 belts do not. A jet is 230 V. A UK outdoor install wants a proper circuit with RCD protection, and an electrician if you are not qualified. Do not run a jet from a casual extension across a wet patio. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still applies to the goods: as described, and of satisfactory quality. It does not cover a homemade electrical lash-up. None of these belts is a lifejacket, and none cites BS EN 13138-1:2021. The cord does not float you. Swim England’s outdoor line is an adult and a tow float, which is not this belt. If someone is in trouble, call 999. Buy the belt to shorten a cord this week, the pole kit if the pool meets that minimum, and the jet only with a shelf price you accept and a qualified person for the mains.

Common questions

What does a belt do that a jet does not?
It holds you with elastic in still water, with no pump and no plug, for £10.95 to £17.99 in this set. A jet moves water and needs 230 V. A Germany review of Roaxkois says the belt is not a full counter-current replacement. The stroke on a cord can lose its glide, which a current may keep if the pool can take the wash.
How much are the belts, the pole kit, and a jet on a UK shelf?
Belts in this set are £10.95 to £17.99. Volare’s 2 m trainer is £37. Poolpro’s Mini is £199.99 including VAT and was out of stock. An InverJet retrofit at 1st Direct starts at £2,795 on the shelf for the 160 m³/h model. The jet figure is not a fitted price.
Why is there no single installed price?
The pages fetched are shelf prices. They do not include a verified UK labour and plumbing total. A span such as £165 to £2,680 is the shop’s hardware range only. Adding a guessed fitting fee would invent a number.
Do you need an electrician?
Not for these belts. They have no mains plug. You do for a jet on a 230 V circuit, unless you are qualified, and the circuit should have RCD protection. A deck plate for a pole kit is a building job, not an electrical one.
Will a belt feel like open water?
Not reliably. The pull is at the waist, the water is still, and the stretch changes through the stroke. A Germany review of TUT describes a strong pull and no glide phase. You can still get time in a short pool. You should not count it as lengths in a 25 m pool.
Is a pole kit the middle step?
It is the middle price, not a middle technology. You still swim on a leash. You gain a pole and a deck plate, at about £200 to £300 on the UK pages cited, if the pool meets that minimum. Poolpro says about 12 ft. The Tub Company Mini says 14 ft. Those floors are not the same.
What must you not claim about safety?
Do not claim the belt floats you, meets BS EN 13138-1:2021, or replaces supervision. Do not claim a measured cord life, or an installed jet price. If someone is in difficulty, call 999. A tow float is a different object from this cord.
