How to set up a paddling pool

Updated: 21 October 2026

The pool is on the patio, the hose is in your hand, and the first fill is the moment it goes wrong: a slope you did not see, a drain left open, or a compressor on a vinyl ring. This is how to set up a paddling pool from the shells in our [paddling pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/paddling-pool), using the Intex Easy Set manual, a paddling-pool warning sheet, and Bestway's install note. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, did not assemble one in a lab. The boxes were captured on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Put it down before you inflate

Choose the spot while the shell is still flat. The Easy Set manual wants flat ground. A retailer warning sheet says not on a slope, mud, a deck, balcony, concrete or asphalt, and asks for at least 2 m from structures. That 2 m line is the sheet's instruction, not a UK bylaw. A balcony is a hard no, because a full pool is a weight over someone else's ceiling. The same sheet says some grasses grow through the liner and does not call that a defect. Which shell you bought is the paddling pool buying guide. Close the valves before you put air in.

Caps, film and the pump you do not have

Close the drain before a litre goes in. On an Easy Set the plug is closed and the outlet points away from the house. Bestway's note says drain cap on, then air in the top ring. A Sunset Glow review hit factory film covering a valve. Check every valve before you blame a puncture. Do not use a compressor. The Easy Set manual bars a high-pressure pump. These boxes do not include an electric pump. A small three-ring is often done by mouth. A family ring is a household pump on 230 V with a BS 1363 plug. Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue says put an RCD on mains you add outdoors.

One shallow fill, then the line

Prove the ground with a shallow fill. The Easy Set manual uses about one inch of water. If the water sits in a lens on one side, the ground slopes. Stop, shift the shell, and test again. On an Easy Set, the full line is the bottom of the inflatable ring, not the top of the wall. The bullets on 28101NP say about 880 litres at 80% full, and the spec says 890 litres. A hosepipe fill is a water-company question, dated in October 2026 for Thames, South East Water in Sussex, and Southern Water. Check the bill before you assume the hose is allowed.

Stay with it

Once the water is at the line, supervision starts. Do not sit or climb on the wall. An Easy Set review says leaning pushes the ring down so the water spills. Cup holders on the Swim Center do not change that rule. Stay within arm's reach for the whole splash. RoSPA's point is that a paddling pool is emptied when you stop watching, because rain can refill it. If a child is missing, the pool is the first place to look and the number is 999. A new garden circuit is an electrician, not part of setup.

Common questions

Lawn or patio?
The Easy Set manual asks for flat ground. A retailer warning sheet says not on mud, a deck, a balcony, concrete or asphalt, and it allows that some grasses grow through the liner without calling that a defect. A patio spares the lawn and may conflict with that hard-surface line, so the sheet in your box wins over a general habit.
How do I know the ground is level?
Put in about an inch of water, which is the Easy Set manual's check, and look at the edge. Water that pools on one side means the shell is sloping. Move it and repeat. A spirit level on the patio helps you choose the spot, but the inch of water is the test the manual actually names. Only continue to the fill line if that shallow water stays even.
Can I use a compressor?
No. The Easy Set manual bars a high-pressure pump, and overinflating a vinyl ring is how seams get asked to do too much before any child arrives. Use lung pressure on a small three-ring, or a household electric pump with a BS 1363 plug, and stop when the ring is firm. These listings do not include that pump. Add an RCD if the pump is mains in the garden.
When do I close the drain?
Before you inflate and before any water goes in. The Easy Set manual wants the plug closed and the drain pointed away from the house. Bestway's install note wants the drain cap on before the top ring is inflated. Finding an open drain at the end of the fill wastes the water and floods the side you aimed at the wall.
How full is full on an Easy Set?
Fill to the bottom of the inflatable ring, not over it. On the 183 cm Easy Set in this set, the bullets say about 880 litres at 80% full and the capacity field says 890 litres. Both figures are on the listing. A higher line is how the wall gets pushed down when someone leans. Stop at the ring and stay with the pool.
What if the valve will not take air?
Check for factory film. A Sunset Glow review in this comparison found valves still sealed, so air could not go in until the film was removed. Press the valve stem and look for a cap in the wrong place. A compressor will not fix a sealed valve, and it can damage a ring that is only partly open. If the valve is clear and the ring still collapses, you are into a puncture, which Bestway treats as outside warranty.
How far from the house should it sit?
The warning sheet asks for at least 2 m from structures. That is the sheet's figure, not a statute. The Easy Set manual adds a practical point: aim the drain away from the house so an empty does not run at the walls. Keep the pool off a balcony entirely if your sheet says so. A missing child is still looked for in the water first, however far the shell sits from the door.
