How to set up a garden pool

Updated: 21 October 2026

The carton is on the patio, the forecast is warm, and the first mistake is filling before you know the ground is level. How to set up a garden pool, for the frames and inflatables in this set, is mostly about the patch, the hose and the plug. Which model to buy is the [garden pool comparison](/hub/swimming-pools/garden-pool). The manufacturers' ground pages and the review notes already on these listings were used. This is not a timed set-up on one lawn. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Pick the patch before you open the carton

A full pool is too heavy to drag. Bestway's UK ground page, updated 30 April 2025, says choose a flat site near a tap and a drain, and that a lawn will mark and the legs can sink. Intex's frame-pool page asks for the same base: level, firm, clear of stones, and not on soft soil. Stones, roots and a patio edge are what hole a liner. If the first centimetres run to one side, stop and move the pool. Shimming one leg does not fix a frame that will twist once the litres are in. Leave room to walk round the wall and for a pump if the water stays up. A ground cloth is worth laying even when it is not in the box. A new base or outdoor socket is a builder or an electrician.

Put the wall up

Two people make a frame honest work. The Intex rectangle's bullets say ready for water in about 30 minutes, and UK reviews describe about half an hour. Bestway 10 ft reviews land near 30 minutes too, sometimes with two people. Slot the poles without grinding the coating off the ends. UK reviews of the rectangle report rust where those poles scrape as they seat. An inflatable is a different half-hour. The lounge claims about 10 minutes, and the air pump is not in the box. Stop when the ring is firm. The description says not to over-inflate. If a GALAXYER seam hisses before any water goes in, stop. The BOODPET has no air step: unfold it and fill. At 18 kg it is still a two-person lift when folded. Do not stand in the pool to seat a soft base.

Fill, plug, and drain

Pool water is fluid category 5. The hose does not sit in the pool. Fill with the end out of the water, then turn the tap off at the tap. Water Regs UK's schools booklet is the public explanation. A hose left in a pool is a route back toward the mains. A filter pump goes on a socket with an RCD, not an extension lead. Bestway's ground page and Intex's frame warnings both say so, and Intex adds: no plug adaptor, and do not dive. One UK review of the Bestway 56418 says the supplied adaptor did not fit a UK socket. Check that before you fill. The Intex rectangle and the Intex 10 ft do not include a pump. A UK review of the rectangle says the drain sits above the floor, so the last water stays in the liner.

Dry it before winter

Unplug the pump before you drain, and send the water away from the house. Bestway's take-down page says drain away from the house and dry the liner. A damp fold sticks, and frost is a bad place for vinyl and for a pump. Dry the poles on the Intex frames, because reviews already complain about rust at the joints. Store the pump indoors with the cartridge out. This page is not a water-chemistry guide. If it is a paddling pool, emptying it is the storage plan, because rain refills a shell you leave upright. A frame you meant to keep up needs a cover as a separate purchase. Who stays within arm's reach is paddling pool safety. Call 999, not a set-up guide, if someone has been under the water.

Common questions

Can I put the pool on a slope if I shim one side?
No. A shim under one leg does not make a slope into a level base. The first centimetres of water will run to the low side, and a full frame is then too heavy to turn. Intex and Bestway both ask for flat, firm ground. If the water gathers on one side, empty what you have put in and move the pool before you continue.
Will the grass die?
The grass under a pool that stays up will mark, and Bestway says so on its UK ground page. Legs can sink into a lawn as well. A ground cloth reduces grit under the liner. It does not promise a green lawn in September. A paddling pool you empty the same day marks the grass less than a frame left full for a fortnight, and it still needs the stones picked off.
How do I fill it without contaminating the tap?
Keep the hose out of the water. Pool water is fluid category 5, so a hose left submerged is not an acceptable fill. Hold or support the hose so the open end stays above the surface, watch the level, and turn the supply off at the tap when you stop. Do not leave a running hose in the pool while you go inside.
Can the pump go on an extension lead?
No. Bestway's ground page and Intex's frame warnings both point away from an extension lead. Use a socket with an RCD that the pump cable can reach. One UK review of the large Bestway said the supplied adaptor did not fit a UK socket. If the plug does not match, stop and sort the plug. Do not solve it with a trail of adaptors across wet grass.
How do I store it so the liner does not stick?
Dry it completely, including valves and seams, then store it where it will not freeze. Bestway's winter page says drain away from the house and dry the liner. A damp fold is what sticks. Dry steel poles before they go in the bag, because rust at the joints is already a UK review theme on the Intex frames. Keep the pump indoors with the cartridge removed.
