How to fit a wall mounted parasol

Updated: 16.10.2026

You have a bracket in the box, and the next question is how to fit a wall mounted parasol without pulling the masonry apart. The canopy is a lever on a few bolts. The bracket is only as strong as the wall and the fixing you chose, and you close the canopy when the wind gets up. The [wall-mounted parasol comparison](/hub/sun-shades/wall-mounted-parasol) shows which listings name a bracket. Products Compared used maker booklets and UK fixing guides on 16 October 2026. We did not install these parasols. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you drill

Stop if consent, the wall type, or the bracket is missing. You need written permission where a lease, a tenancy, or a freeholder controls the wall, and you need a bracket in the box, not only a title that says wall-mounted. Dacorum’s tenant handbook says drilling an external wall can let water in. Oxford City Council asks leaseholders for written permission before anything is fixed to an external wall, and it names awnings. If you are waiting on that letter, do not start the holes. Permission sits on the balcony page. Kettler’s booklet, for that brand, says the fixings are not in the box. None of the four Amazon listings states a bolt diameter, a plug size, or a resin specification. The BAKAJI UK review says a wall-attachment screw was missing. That is a parts gap, not a fitting method. If the bracket is absent, use the buying guide first.

Where the bolts should land

On solid brick, the load bolt wants the centre of a brick, not the mortar joint. A vendor reply on a DIY Stack Exchange thread puts the top bolt in the brick centre and uses the lower bolt to stop the bracket rotating. A bolt in the mortar can work loose when the canopy fills with wind. An expansion plug can crack masonry near an edge. If the first hole is not brick, stop. Height comes from that model’s template. These four Amazon files do not state a bracket height.

After it is up

The fitting is not finished when the last bolt is tight. Kettler’s booklet tells you to close the parasol and fit the night cover when it is windy, and that brand’s 12-month domestic warranty excludes wind damage. Cape & Co. uses about 20 mph as a rule of thumb for closing parasols in general. None of the four listings states a Beaufort number. A bullet that says windproof, with no speed, is not a reason to leave a 300 cm canopy open overnight. Check the bolts after the first windy week. A bracket that has shifted means the fixing or the wall was wrong.

When a professional should take over

Call a fixer when the wall is a cavity, when the outer leaf is render on insulation, or when the hole has already missed the brick. Glatz says a wall console for a larger parasol should be fitted by a professional on site. That is a different brand, and the point still holds: a canopy over a path or a neighbour’s window is a load above people’s heads. If you cannot see the inner leaf, you cannot know whether a long fixing will bridge the cavity. A professional also takes over if the only workable height puts the open canopy across a door or a shared walkway. Do not fill a bad hole with a longer screw. Resin is for a clean hole in sound material. It does not replace a bracket that was never in the box.

Common questions

Are the wall plugs in the box the right ones?
Often they are not in the box at all. Kettler’s booklet says the fixings are not included and that you match them to your wall. A BAKAJI UK review reported a missing wall-attachment screw, which is a missing part, not proof that any screw in a mixed pack suits your brick. None of these four listings states a plug size. If the packet does not match the wall you have, buy the fixing for the wall.
Should the bolt go in the brick or the mortar?
Put the load bolt in the centre of a brick. A vendor line on a public fitting thread uses the top bolt in the brick centre and a lower bolt to stop rotation. Mortar is the joint, and it is the weak line. If the template misses the centres, a spreader plate can move the holes onto brick. Do not drill the perp joint because it was easier to mark.
When do I use resin instead of a plug?
Use resin when an expansion plug might crack the masonry, which DIY Doctor flags near an edge. Clean the hole and follow the cartridge, including that product’s cure time. Do not treat a resin brand’s torque chart as the parasol’s own specification. These Amazon listings do not state a bolt diameter. If the brick is already soft or the edge is thin, resin is not a substitute for a better wall or a fixer.
Can I fix this to a cavity wall or to render on insulation?
Not from this page as a DIY sequence. You cannot see the inner leaf, and a fixing that bridges a cavity badly can let water in. Dacorum warns that drilling an external wall can do that. Render on insulation hides the structure. That is the point where a professional should take over, after you have consent to alter the wall.
When do I close it?
Close it when you go out, and close it when the wind rises. Cape & Co.’s about 20 mph is their rule of thumb for parasols, not a rating printed on these listings. Kettler says close the canopy and fit the night cover in wind, and that warranty excludes wind damage. None of these four states a wind speed. A windproof bullet does not change the habit.
