Parasol base weight and wind

Updated: 22.10.2026

The canopy looks light in the photo, the lights are the reason you clicked, and nothing on the amazon.co.uk page tells you what stops it walking across the patio. Parasol base weight and wind is that gap. There is no single UK legal kilogram and no single wind speed that applies to every garden parasol. This page uses the five captures in our [parasol with LED comparison](/hub/sun-shades/parasol-with-led), plus shop guides that disagree with each other. We did not weigh a base or run a wind test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. LED modes and USB stay off this page. The crank order stays on [how to set up a solar LED parasol](/hub/sun-shades/parasol-with-led/sub/parasol-with-led-how-to-set-up), except for the point that the base goes down first. There is no single UK base weight

Opal Retail says to add 10-20 kg in an exposed garden, and that a base marked 100 kg reaches that weight with sand, not empty and not with water. Ruma puts a 2.7-3 m cantilever nearer 90 kg and a centre pole nearer 40 kg. Cape & Co. talks about 30 kg for a 3 m centre pole, about 110 kg for a cantilever, and closing near 20 mph. Those figures are not one British Standard. None of these five prints a recommended base weight. The MasterCanopy parasol is 5.38 kg, the umbrella rather than the stand. Outsunny bases at 20 kg, 25 kg, or about 55-60 kg belong to those models. The parasol with LED lights buying guide puts the base after size and power, because a diode count does not hold the pole.

What these listings say about a base

The MasterCanopy, B0829T2R1F, at about £76.45, says the base is not included, and UK reviews say the photo shows one. The URL and details ASIN match. The Harrier, B0C6QYRVV1, at about £52.99, does not state a base. A reviewer expected a stand and a cover. The details block prints B0GYSZGHCY and 300 cm against a 2.7 m title. That does not put a foot in the box. The PHI VILLA, B0FFLJMLC9, at about £134.99, does not include a stated base. UK reviews describe an existing base, a loose table hole, and spin in light wind. A 3.8 x 2 m canopy has more area than a 2.7 m circle. Do not treat side lines in reviews as a fix to drill. The tillvex, at about £107.79, does not state a base. A review ordered fillable weights, and a German review reported a bent pole after light wind while calling it offset. The English title does not say cantilever, and it gives wind no speed. The Monster Shop, at about £69.99, asks about stability without a weighted base and does not answer.

When to close it

Close it when the canopy lifts, spins, or the pole bends. Return the tilt to level, then crank it down. Shape and review volume on the best parasol with LED lights page do not overrule that. PHI VILLA reviews say it spins in little wind. Brollies and Parasols says close above 25 km/h. A Bolton Council sheet for the council's own parasols says 25 mph. Those are different speeds, and Cape & Co.'s about 20 mph is another shop line. Use the sheet in your box, or the lift-spin-bend test. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 do not publish a parasol kilogram. A mains lead on the lights is not a heavier base.

A cover does not replace closing

A cover stores a furled canopy. It will not hold an open one in a gust, and it is not a reason to leave the crown over a heater. The tillvex title includes a cover. The MasterCanopy file does not. The Harrier calls a cover optional.

Common questions

How heavy a base does a 2.7 m parasol need?
There is no single UK figure. Opal, Ruma, and Cape & Co. publish different bands, and cantilever bands are much higher. None of those kilograms is printed on the MasterCanopy, the Harrier, or the Monster Shop. The MasterCanopy does say the base is not included.
Is the base in the box on these listings?
No file states that it is. The MasterCanopy says it is not, and reviews say the photo shows one. PHI VILLA reviewers used a base they already had. A tillvex review ordered fillable weights separately.
Sand or water in a fillable base?
Opal says a high filled weight is reached with sand, not water, because water is lighter in the same shell. Expect a water fill to weigh less, to freeze, and to leak. Do not open the parasol while the base is still empty.
Can a cantilever use a table hole?
A centre pole can. A cantilever stands beside the table, which is why shop guides put it in a heavier band. The English titles here do not say cantilever. A German review calls the tillvex offset. If the live page shows a side arm, the table hole is the wrong fixing.
When do I close a parasol with the lights still on it?
When it lifts, spins, or the pole bends, even if the LEDs are on. Switch them off, return the tilt, and crank it down. Brollies and Parasols says 25 km/h. Bolton Council's sheet says 25 mph. Do not merge those speeds.
