How to stop a gazebo blowing away

Updated: 22.10.2026

The forecast has turned while the gazebo is still on the patio, the sandbags in the box are flat, and the pegs will not go into the slabs. How to stop a gazebo blowing away, for the eleven fabric listings in our [garden gazebo comparison](/hub/sun-shades/garden-gazebo), starts from three facts. The bags arrive empty, pegs do not hold on hard standing, and none of these amazon.co.uk rows prints a maximum wind speed. It is not a wind-tunnel result and not a product winner. Fill or replace the bags, and take the shelter down when gusts are in the forecast. Opening the frame is [how to put up a pop up gazebo](/hub/sun-shades/garden-gazebo/sub/garden-gazebo-how-to-put-up).

The bag in the box is not the kilogram

Every pop-up in this set that lists weight bags is listing sacks, not ballast. All Seasons includes four leg weight bags on the 3 × 3 m, the 3 × 4.5 m and the 3 × 6 m. VOUNOT includes four on the square models and six on the 3 × 6 m. You still have to fill them. All Seasons’ FAQ says each of its bags holds up to 10 kg. On the beige All Seasons B00KJPMJWS, supplied sandbags split while being filled or in use. On the white VOUNOT B0DHC4PTT2, the bags are called too small. Replace a split bag before the party. Gazeboshop suggests about 12.5 kg per leg up to a 3 × 3 m on one page and about 15 kg on another. Gala Shade suggests 13 kg. These rules of thumb are not printed on our ASINs.

Patio, grass, and every leg

Pegs are for ground that will hold them. The Canal & River Trust separates pegs on grass from weights on tarmac. Gala Shade says not to peg into concrete. A patio, deck or block paving needs ballast on the feet, tied to the frame, not to the canopy hem. Use the same mass on every leg. The 3 × 6 m has six feet on the VOUNOT, and only four bags on the All Seasons 3 × 6 m listing. If you only have four bags for six legs, you do not yet have a weighted frame. Outsunny reviews include a complaint that there were no eyelets, even though the specification line says four guylines. A wall is a sail, so Gazeboshop’s higher figure when walls are fitted is that seller’s way of saying so.

Why the miles-per-hour figures do not match

Which?, on pop-up gazebos it tested, says leave one overnight only if you are confident gusts will not exceed 15 mph and the legs are pegged or weighted. The model names for a 25 mph result are paywalled, so that figure is not a label for any ASIN here. Gala Shade uses about 30 mph as its own stop. Gazeboshop talks about taking a gazebo down over 35 mph. None of those figures is printed on these rows. Do not average them into a safe speed for Saturday. RELAX FIELD reviews say the 3 × 3 m flipped in a slight breeze. A higher price does not remove the takedown.

When to take it down

Take it down when you will not be there, when the forecast is for gusts, and when rain is pooling on the roof. All Seasons says overnight or unattended use voids the frame-parts warranty on its pop-ups. Outsunny’s bullet says not to leave the 2 × 2 m standing in heavy weather. VOUNOT B09SB3YNMG and B0CPF3TP8N say the pop-up is not for inclement or unattended weather. The grey VOUNOT B0932S6HGZ tells you not to break the frame with accumulated rainwater. If the roof is holding a belly of water, get the water off or get the frame down. If you are deciding whether a fabric roof should have been a hardtop that stays all winter, that is pop up gazebo vs hardtop gazebo.

Common questions

How much weight is a rule of thumb for a 3 × 3 m?
Gazeboshop offers about 12.5 kg per leg for a canopy-only 3 × 3 m on one page and about 15 kg on another. Gala Shade offers 13 kg as a minimum. All Seasons caps its own bag at 10 kg. Use these as other people’s rules of thumb, then look at your forecast. This page will not average them into one safe kilogram.
Do side walls mean more weight?
They can, because a wall catches wind. Gazeboshop’s FAQ steps up to about 25 kg per leg when side walls are on, for the sizes it is describing. That is its guidance, not a test of VOUNOT or Outsunny. If you hang walls, add mass on every leg and take the shelter down sooner, rather than leaving the windward sheet up as a sail overnight.
Can I leave it up overnight?
All Seasons says no, in the sense that overnight or unattended use voids the frame-parts warranty. Which? says, for pop-ups it tested, only if you are confident gusts will stay within 15 mph and the legs are held down. VOUNOT’s inclement-weather bullets and Outsunny’s heavy-weather line point the same way. When in doubt, take it down.
What wind speed is printed for these ASINs?
None. The eleven listings do not state a maximum wind speed. Which?’s 15 mph line, Gala Shade’s about 30 mph, and Gazeboshop’s over 35 mph are those publishers’ figures, and they disagree. Do not attach 25 mph from Which?’s sturdiest paywalled model to a gazebo in this table. Heavy duty on the title is not a speed either.
Will a heavier All Seasons frame remove the need to take it down?
No. The brand’s FAQ still limits its pop-ups to light and moderate wind and still treats overnight use as a warranty void, including on the larger 3 × 4.5 m and 3 × 6 m rows. The printed item weights are not a wind rating. A £279.99 frame can still lift if the feet are light. Price does not delete the forecast.
