How to use a Doppler parasol

Updated: 22.10.2026

You have the pole, the canopy and a base on a UK patio, and the first windy afternoon is when a crank gets forced past its stop. This is how to use a Doppler parasol in the four centre-pole models we compared: fit the lower tube, open only until the canopy is set, tilt after that, then close and cover it before wind, rain or snow. The [Doppler parasol comparison](/hub/sun-shades/doppler-parasol) is the model table. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The Products Compared editorial team updated this page on 21 October 2026 from Doppler's warranty, FAQ and crank instructions, plus the amazon.co.uk listings.

Fit the pole before you open it

Put the base on level ground and seat the lower tube fully before you touch the canopy. Both Rethink models in this set use a 3.2 cm lower tube on the manufacturer pages. The Jack listing states 3.8 cm, and the two mast tubes push together so the lower one sits in the sleeve. The Active listing states about 38 mm on the lower tube and about 35 mm on the upper pole. A sleeve drilled for 3.2 cm will rattle on the Jack. The Active Auto Tilt manual's own line for the 210 names a 40 kg base. Use that figure for this 210. On a balcony, stop here if you do not know what the slab is allowed to carry, and ask the freeholder before you roll a heavy base out. The floor that choice needs is on the balcony page.

Open a hand opener or a crank

A Rethink has no crank. You free the tie, open the canopy a little by hand so the cloth is not trapped, and push the runner up the pole until it locks. If the cloth catches, stop and free it. Forcing the runner pulls ribs, and pulled ribs sit outside the warranty. A Jack or an Active opens on the crank. Remove the sleeve and tie, open the canopy slightly by hand, then turn the crank clockwise. Do not keep winding against the stop. The Jack is not height adjustable. The Active bullets claim a height adjustment and a passage of about 195 cm, so set the height before you start the tilt turns. Which mechanism you bought is on the crank or hand opener page.

Tilt only after it is fully open

Tilt is for the sun, once the canopy is open and the pole is seated. It is not a way to spill wind out of the cloth. On the Jack, the bullets say the roof tilts on both sides by a manual tilt. You set that joint after the crank has finished opening the canopy. You do not get the tilt by cranking past fully open. On the Active Auto Tilt, the instructions say the opposite sequence for the angle: open fully clockwise, then keep turning and the canopy bends. Stop when the angle is where you want it. Further force, after the tilt has reached its travel, is the over-wind the warranty excludes. The Rethink knuckle is a push or a button on the joint, not a crank. If it will not move, do not hammer it. If the wind is rising, skip the tilt and close it.

Close, strap and cover

Close before the weather arrives, not after the first gust has folded a rib. Turn a crank anticlockwise until the canopy is down, and watch for cloth pinched between the ribs. On a Rethink, release the runner and walk it down the pole with the same care. Strap the canopy so it cannot flap overnight. Doppler's FAQ says to close the parasol when wind, rain or snow is coming. Leaving it up is outside the three-year manufacturing warranty if the wind damages it. Both Rethink titles name a cover. The Jack's manufacturer page says a cover is not included. If a rib, crown wire or crank is already bent, stop using it and tell the seller.

Common questions

Which way do you turn the crank?
Clockwise opens the Jack and the Active. Anticlockwise closes them. Open the cloth slightly by hand first so it does not trap, and stop when the canopy is set. The Rethink has no crank. You push the runner up and bring it down by hand.
How do you tilt an Active Auto Tilt?
Open it fully with the crank, then keep turning and the canopy tilts. Stop at the angle you need. Cranking on after the mechanism has stopped is the over-turn Doppler excludes from the warranty. The Jack does not tilt this way.
What if the cloth catches in the ribs?
Stop. Slack the crank or the runner and pull the cloth free before you continue. Forcing it pulls ribs and can snap the wires at the crown, which shows up in Rethink reviews as a first-open failure. Hands stay outside the folding parts.
When must you close it?
Close and strap it when wind, rain or snow is coming, and whenever you leave it overnight in changeable UK weather. A heavy base does not make an open canopy safe in a rising wind. Doppler's stated limit, with the recommended base, is about Beaufort 4, roughly 20–28 km/h.
Does every model include a cover?
Both Rethink titles name a cover. The Jack's manufacturer page says no cover is included. The Active listing in our file does not say. Buy a cover for the Jack, and check the Active carton before you assume one is there.
When should a builder or the freeholder take over?
A builder should set a ground sleeve in concrete. You should not cut one into a suspended balcony slab. Ask the freeholder or the managing agent if you do not know the balcony's load limit before you place a 30 or 40 kg base. An unsafe product can be reported on GOV.UK.
