Doppler parasol buying guide

Updated: 22.10.2026

A narrow balcony and a small patio do not want the same Doppler parasol, even when both titles say balcony. This Doppler parasol buying guide keeps one order: canopy size and shape, then the opener, then a base that matches the lower tube, and only then the UV line. The [Doppler parasol comparison](/hub/sun-shades/doppler-parasol) is the four-model table. Prices are GBP from our amazon.co.uk capture, and they move. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The Products Compared editorial team updated this page on 21 October 2026 from those listings and Doppler's public pages, without a lab test.

What the labelled size actually covers

Doppler measures a round canopy along the ribs. The shade on the paving is smaller than that label, so a 250 cm title does not give you a 250 cm circle of cool ground at noon. In this set the four canopies are a rectangle at 180 x 120 cm, a 200 cm round, a 210 cm round and a 250 cm round. The rectangle is the Rethink listing B0B5B3PSMC. Our raw file missed the size, because the details block printed a conflicting ASIN, but the amazon.co.uk title on 20 October 2026 and Doppler's model page both say 180 x 120 cm. The 200 cm round is B0B5B4JJ38, the 210 cm round is the Active Auto Tilt B08WLZ2GNL, and the 250 cm round is the Jack B0B5B5YQDB. A balcony barely wider than a chair wants the rectangle. An opener will not fix a canopy that already overhangs the rail.

Opener before you look at the crank

Both Rethink listings open by hand. You lift a runner on the pole. The Jack and the Active use a crank. Doppler's three-year warranty covers manufacturing defects and excludes damage from over-turning a crank. That exclusion matters if your shoulder will not lift a runner overhead, because a crank then earns its extra cost. The Active adds a second behaviour: once the canopy is fully open, further crank turns tilt it. The Jack tilts both ways on its own joint, and the bullets say the umbrella is not height adjustable. The Rethink 200 attribute block does not state height adjustment, so this guide does not treat height as a reason to pick either hand opener. If the mechanism is the only question left, use the crank or hand opener page.

Base weight and pole diameter

The Jack listing says the parasol is sold without a base. The Active listing says to order the base separately. The Rethink 200 included-components line lists a cover, a base and a ground anchor, while several reviews say no base arrived, so price a base until the live box contents match the parcel. Doppler's model page for the 180 x 120 cm Rethink names a minimum base of 40 kg and a lower tube of 3.2 cm. A generic round-canopy table on Doppler's site quotes 25 kg at 180 cm and says that table is not for rectangular canopies, so the 40 kg on the rectangle's own page is the figure to use. The 200 cm Rethink model page names 30 kg and the same 3.2 cm lower tube. The Jack's lower tube on amazon.co.uk is 3.8 cm. The Active states about 38 mm on the lower tube and about 35 mm on the upper pole. A sleeve bought for 3.2 cm is a poor match for 3.8 cm.

UV wording and the real budget

UV 50+ appears in the bullets for the Jack and the Active, and on the manufacturer pages for both Rethink models in this set. Doppler's English FAQ separates that 50+ wording from UV 80 under UV Standard 801 on higher canopies. These four listings do not show a UV Standard 801 label, so a 50+ bullet is the page's own claim. Keep using sunscreen. After size, opener and base, the UV line is a check.

Common questions

What size Doppler parasol fits a small UK patio or balcony?
A narrow balcony in this set points to the 180 x 120 cm Rethink rectangle. A small round table points to the 200 cm Rethink, or to the 210 cm Active if you already know you need a crank. The 250 cm Jack is the larger patio circle.
Is the labelled canopy the shade you get on the ground?
Doppler measures along the ribs, and the FAQ says the shaded patch on the ground is smaller than that figure. A 200 cm round will not throw a full 200 cm of shade across a table at every hour. Leave a margin around chairs.
Does the base come in the box?
The Jack and the Active listings say the base is separate. The Rethink 200 attribute line lists a base and a ground anchor, and reviews dispute that. Check the live amazon.co.uk contents on the day you order, and price a base until the parcel arrives.
What pole diameter does the base have to match?
The manufacturer pages for both Rethink models here state a 3.2 cm lower tube. The Jack listing states 3.8 cm. The Active listing states about 38 mm lower and about 35 mm upper. Match the sleeve to the lower tube of the parasol you are buying.
Is UV 50+ the same as UV Standard 801?
They are different claims. UV 50+ on these bullets and on the Rethink model pages is the figure those pages print. UV Standard 801 at UPF 80 is the label Doppler's FAQ uses for higher models. These four listings do not show that certificate.
What wind is this set meant for, and what should you add to the price?
Doppler's FAQ says that, with the recommended base, these sunshades are meant for about Beaufort 4, roughly 20–28 km/h. Close the parasol when wind, rain or snow is on the way.
