Commercial parasol buying guide

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are looking at a café table, or a patio table at home, and the amazon.co.uk results all look like parasols. Some titles say market. Some say garden. One says commercial quality and then leaves the size blank. This commercial parasol buying guide puts the measurements in the order that decides the buy: the job, the canopy against the table, the headroom, the pole and the base, and only then the cloth. The [commercial parasol comparison](/hub/sun-shades/commercial-parasol) lines up the ten listings from amazon.co.uk. Peter F. read those listings on 21 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. Start with the job, not the star rating

A back garden and a pavement café are different permissions, even when the canopy looks the same. On your own patio you can buy a garden parasol once the size, the pole and a real base work. On a public pavement in England or Wales, the Business and Planning Act 2020 lets the council attach local conditions. Hyndburn, Newport, Pendle, Darlington and Dundee refuse garden-style umbrellas. If the furniture sits on the highway, read the pavement café parasol rules before you compare polyester with olefin. Prices in this set run from £32.99 to £134.99, which is this amazon.co.uk shelf, not a specialist café series that starts near £289 before the base.

Size the canopy from the table

Measure the table top, then add overhang. Shade Specialists suggest about 50 cm of canopy past the edge, and they point a 1.5 m table toward about a 3 m canopy. A common trade suggestion for a four- to six-seater is about 2.7 m to 3 m. Those figures are seller rules of thumb, not a statute. Printed sizes here include 2.2 m pagodas, 2.3 m and 2.7 m MasterCanopy rows, an ABCCANOPY cube with a 9–11 ft model string (one UK reviewer measured 2.8 m), a PHI VILLA title of 3.8 x 2 m, and a £55.59 commercial-quality listing with no size at all.

Leave headroom under the brim

The lowest point of the canopy should clear standing heads and a door you walk through. Pavement conditions often set that point at least 2.0 m. Wyre publishes 2.1 m. Those are local sentences, not one UK statute, and they are not the GOV.UK suggestion of about 2 m between smoking and non-smoking seats. Bristol’s pavement licence covers removable parasols up to 2.5 m diameter. A larger canopy also needs a hospitality structures licence, so a 2.7 m round listing can cross that line even when the brim clears heads. MasterCanopy prints the 2.3 m model as 2.03 m high. That is the item dimension, not a measured brim, and it sits close to the 2.0 m floor some councils use.

Pole diameter and base are the next purchase

38 mm and 48 mm are the common trade pole sizes, and sockets are often quoted at 38, 48 or 58 mm. Measure the outside diameter where the pole enters the base. None of the ten listings print that diameter, so you cannot order a sleeve from the ASIN alone. Item weight is the parasol, not the ballast: about 4.05 kg, 5.55 kg and 6.91 kg on the crank models that print a weight, and 5.2 kg on the pagodas. Alfresco Europe uses about 50 kg freestanding for a 3 m centre pole and about 20 kg when the pole passes through a sturdy table. A table hole does not remove the base. Grip and when to close the canopy sit on how to secure a commercial parasol.

Cloth, ribs and slogans come after that

Polyester with a vent, or an olefin canopy, and aluminium or fibreglass ribs, are the checks once size and pole are settled. The olefin pair prints eight fibreglass ribs and a sentence that they withstand 36 mph. That sentence is not an independent test, and it is not a reason to leave the canopy up. A title UPF 50+ is not BS EN 13758. Never fade on the ABCCANOPY title is a slogan.

Common questions

What size commercial parasol do I need for a café table?
Measure the table, then allow overhang. Seller guides often suggest about 2.7 m to 3 m for a four- to six-seat table, and about 50 cm of canopy past the edge. Those figures are seller rules of thumb, not a statute. A listing with no size printed cannot be matched to the table at all.
How high should the brim be?
Many pavement conditions ask for a lowest point of at least 2.0 m, and Wyre publishes 2.1 m. That is headroom under the canopy, and it is local wording rather than one national rule. It is not the GOV.UK suggestion of about 2 m between smoking and non-smoking seats.
What pole diameter should the base fit?
Trade poles are commonly 38 mm or 48 mm, and sleeves are often quoted at 38, 48 or 58 mm. Measure the outside of the pole where it enters the base. Every listing in this set leaves the diameter blank, so the ASIN does not tell you which sleeve to buy.
Does the parasol’s item weight tell me the base weight?
No. The weights printed here, about 4.05 kg to 6.91 kg on the crank models and 5.2 kg on the pagodas, are the parasol. A commercial seller’s rule of thumb is about 50 kg freestanding for a 3 m centre pole, and less when the pole goes through a heavy table, never zero. That band is not law.
When do I stop and read the pavement rules instead?
Stop as soon as the parasol will stand on a public pavement, not on land you control. England and Wales use a local pavement licence. Scotland uses its own permit. A garden title, or the words commercial quality, do not answer the council’s sentence.
