Lafuma deckchair for a small balcony

Updated: October 2026

A small balcony has a door, a railing, and usually one cupboard in the hall that is already full of coats. A Lafuma deckchair for a small balcony still has to live somewhere when you are not sitting on it. The Maxi Transat folds to a slab about 124 cm tall and about 5–6 cm thick. The R Clip folds shorter and about 17 cm thick, and it weighs almost twice as much. This page stays with size, weight, and the surface you put the feet on. Comfort and the 127-degree claim stay on [Lafuma Maxi Transat vs R Clip](/hub/sun-loungers/lafuma-deck-chair/sub/lafuma-deck-chair-maxi-transat-vs-r-clip). Washing and winter storage actions are on [how to use a Lafuma deckchair](/hub/sun-loungers/lafuma-deck-chair/sub/lafuma-deck-chair-how-to-use). The four Amazon prices are on the [Lafuma deck chair](/hub/sun-loungers/lafuma-deck-chair) comparison.

The fold you have to store

Measure the cupboard before you fall for folds flat. Lafuma's Graphite Maxi Transat sheet gives a folded height of 124 cm, a width of 62 cm, and a depth of 5 cm, at 3.7 kg. The choosing guide says about 6 cm, and Birstall's Seigle page prints a closed size of 62 × 124 × 6 cm, which matches the Seigle Amazon dimension line on B0BVRLNVG2. Those are two published thicknesses. We did not measure a sample. What they share is the tall axis. A 6 cm fold is still a 124 cm board. A low hall cupboard will refuse it even when a magazine slot would accept the thickness. The R Clip family sheet, written for a Terre colour and used here as the family size, gives a folded height of 99 cm, a width of 67 cm, and a depth of 17 cm, at 6.6 kg. That is a shorter parcel and a much deeper one. It will stand under a 100 cm shelf that rejects the transat, and it will not slide into a 10 cm gap behind a door. The Amazon Seigle R Clip prints 67 × 114 × 88 cm. That string does not match the folded table or the open table on the UK sheet, so do not treat 114 cm as a seat width or as the folded height.

What you carry upstairs or to the car

The Maxi Transat is about 3.7 kg on the UK sheets, 3.7 kg on the Seigle Amazon row, and 3.67 kg on the Graphite row. One person can take it up a flight of stairs without planning a second pair of hands. Two of them are still under 8 kg. That is the small-space advantage, and it survives the argument about whether the Seigle fold field is messy. The object, once you own a real transat, is a light slab. The R Clip is 6.6 kg on both Amazon colours and on the family sheet. On a narrow stair a 17 cm parcel is a different carry from a 6 cm slab, and two recliners pass 13 kg. If you sit on the balcony and store in the flat, the transat keeps that walk ordinary. Graphite's Amazon page says the chair folds. The Seigle Maxi Transat page disagrees with itself. For a cupboard, prefer the Graphite listing at £46.13 unless you will query that conflict. R Clip Seigle says foldable. Océan does not agree with its own highlight. A flat 62 cm by 124 cm slab still needs a straight 124 cm in the car, and we have not measured a named hatchback.

The space it needs while you sit

Open, the Graphite Maxi Transat sheet runs to a height of about 77–91 cm and a depth of about 83–95 cm, on a width of 62 cm. Two of them side by side need about 124 cm of frontage plus a little air between the frames, and each one needs roughly a metre of depth when someone is reclined. A balcony that is 90 cm deep will clip the feet or the headrest end. Sit in the most reclined notch you intend to use before you decide that two chairs fit because the folded slabs fit in the cupboard. The R Clip family sheet gives an open height of about 81–114 cm, a width of 67 cm, and a depth from 88 cm to 163 cm. That long figure is what empties a small balcony, well before a Maxi Transat's 95 cm. Those figures are for a Terre colour on the family sheet. The Océan Amazon lines, 87 × 68 × 114 cm and 87 × 68 × 94 cm, are a different string, so do not merge them.

Hard floor, and a damp balcony

The listings say hard floor. Standing water around the feet is the winter risk, so dry the chair and take it inside if the balcony is the only store. If space is the only criterion, the Maxi Transat wins in this set, with the 124 cm fold as the condition. If you need the recliner, accept 17 cm and 6.6 kg. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We used published UK sizes. We did not measure your balcony.

Common questions

How thick is a folded Maxi Transat?
About 5 cm on Lafuma's Graphite product sheet, and about 6 cm on the choosing guide and on Birstall's Seigle page. The Seigle Amazon line is 62 × 124 × 6 cm. Use 5–6 cm as the published range. The thickness is the easy axis. The 124 cm height is the one that decides the cupboard.
How tall is it when folded?
About 124 cm for a Maxi Transat, with a width of about 62 cm. An R Clip family sheet gives about 99 cm of folded height, 67 cm of width, and 17 cm of depth. A low cupboard can reject the transat and accept the recliner, or the reverse can happen if the gap is wide and thin. Measure both axes, not only the one the advert mentions.
Will it fit in a hatchback boot?
The folded transat is a flat slab of about 62 cm by 124 cm and about 5–6 cm thick. It needs a straight 124 cm somewhere in the car. We have not measured hatchbacks, so we will not promise a fit in a named model. If your boot is shorter than that slab, the chair will ride on the back seat or stay at home. The R Clip's 99 cm height is shorter and its 17 cm depth is the new problem.
Is the R Clip more compact because it is a recliner?
It is shorter when folded, at about 99 cm against 124 cm, and it is much less compact in every other storage sense. The family sheet gives 17 cm of depth and 6.6 kg, against about 5–6 cm and 3.7 kg. Open, the recliner can need up to 163 cm of depth. Buy it for the posture. Buy the transat if the word you care about is compact.
How much does each one weigh to carry upstairs?
About 3.7 kg for a Maxi Transat, or 3.67 kg on the Graphite Amazon row. The R Clip listings and the family sheet say 6.6 kg. Two transats stay under 8 kg. Two R Clips pass 13 kg. On a narrow stair the shape matters as well as the number, because a 17 cm parcel does not lie flat against you.
Can two of them live on a small balcony while open?
Two Maxi Transat frames need about 62 cm of width each and up to about 95 cm of depth in the reclined position on the Graphite sheet. Two R Clips need about 67 cm of width each and can run to 163 cm of depth. A balcony under a metre deep will struggle with the recliner's long notch. Folded storage in the flat does not mean both chairs can be open at once.
What if the only storage is a damp balcony all winter?
Dry the sling and the frame, and use a cover made for that model, or take the chair indoors. Lafuma's winter guidance prefers a dry shed, garage, or loft, and it treats a cover as protection in addition to a dry place. A deckchair bag does not automatically fit an R Clip. Standing water around the feet is the rust risk, whatever the Batyline bullet says about rain.
