Camping hammock

Updated: 21 October 2026

You want to sleep in a hammock in Britain, not only sit in one after lunch. The camping hammock in the box is the bed. It is not the roof, and it is not the insulation under your back. This page stays on that overnight job, using amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026 and public UK camping guidance. It is not a night we spent in these hammocks, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. A garden afternoon belongs on the [hammock comparison](/hub/sun-loungers/hammock). How the straps should sit is on [how to hang a hammock](/hub/sun-loungers/hammock/sub/hammock-how-to-hang).

What a British night actually needs

Camping Sites in Britain describes hammock camping as a four-part kit: the bed, the straps, insulation, and a tarp. A bug net joins the list in midge season. None of the ten kept listings includes a tarp or an underquilt. If you buy only the hammock, you have bought the first part. Live For The Outdoors looked at a package around £70 that still had no tarp. The gap is normal, not a defect unique to a £19.99 listing. The bed you can carry from this set is nylon with straps and a packed weight under about 1 kg. AnorTrek is 590 g with 2.5 m loop straps. COVACURE is 560 g with 10 ft straps. Glymnis is 820 g, Ovyuzhen 748 g, and the longer Cycayit about 560–600 g. ANYOO at 1.68 kg is the garden weight. Travel Bird is 820 g and brings a net, not a complete kit. DD’s Frontline, outside this set, is £49 with a stated 125 kg and a separate underblanket. A specialist page still fails to put the night in one box.

A cold back is normal without insulation

The underside of a hammock is open to the air. A sleeping bag under your body is crushed, so the fill that works on a tent floor stops working. COVACURE reviewers describe that cold back. Cycayit’s longer listing says cool overnight use needs extra insulation, and one UK review could not sleep in a bag and wanted guy ropes. The missing piece is a mat or an underquilt that stays airy under you. None of these boxes includes that layer. A thicker cotton bed does not solve it, and ANYOO’s 1.68 kg is the wrong weight to carry for a problem the cloth cannot fix. Nylon that dries quickly will still let rain through. Pack a tarp over the bed and the suspension, pitched so water does not run down the straps. A tent you already trust is the better night when the forecast is wet and you have nowhere legal to hang.

Nets, midges and the one hammock that has a net

Scottish midges are the reason a net stops being optional. Camping Sites in Britain treats a bug net as part of the UK kit in midge season. Travel Bird is the only hammock here with one built in, plus a ridge, at £35.99, 290 x 140 cm and 820 g, rated 4.3 from 36 reviews. One UK review used that net against Scottish midges. Another cut the net off and removed the ridge because both were too short to tension the bed. Check you can still lie on the diagonal with the net closed. DD describes the Frontline mesh as fine enough for a Scottish midge, at a stated 125 kg and a separate underblanket. That hammock is not one of these ten. The other nine listings leave the net to you. A zip-on net you can leave at home can be the better buy than a sewn-in net you have to cut off. The Travel Bird field says 440 lb, and a bullet gives the ridge rope 250 kg. Those are different parts of the kit.

Trees, permission and when a tent is the honest choice

You still need two living trees and permission to use them. The Countryside Code says leave trees as you find them. Forestry England’s Forest Code says protect trees. Neither is a permit to sleep overnight. Wild camping is not something this page can call generally legal. A campsite that allows hammocks, or land where you have asked, is the straightforward night. One Travel Bird reviewer also carries a tent for sites with no trees. Take the straps off when you leave. If the only fixing is a wall, a balcony, or a damaged tree, pitch the tent or ask a competent person. Stay under the lower printed load. This site did not test it. The carry cloth is nylon, on the nylon or cotton hammock page. A named fair-weather bed, rather than a full night, is the best hammock page. Neither page puts a tarp in the box.

Common questions

Can a hammock replace a tent in Britain?
Only if you add a tarp, insulation under your back, and a legal place to hang. The hammock is the bed. Rain and a cold underside are the reasons a tent remains the simpler night when you do not own the rest of the kit. None of these ten listings ships a tarp or an underquilt.
Why is your back cold?
Because the sleeping bag under you is crushed, and the air under the cloth keeps taking heat. COVACURE reviews describe that cold back, and Cycayit’s bullet says cool overnight use needs extra insulation. A tighter hang does not replace a mat or an underquilt. A thicker garden cotton does not replace it either.
Do you need a tarp?
Yes, if you mean to sleep rather than sit out a shower. Nylon in this set can dry quickly and still not be a roof. Pitch the tarp so water does not run down the straps into the bed. A tested package around £70 in a 2026 outdoor review still came without one.
What about Scottish midges?
A net is worth having in midge season, which UK camping guidance already says. Travel Bird is the only built-in net here, and one UK review used it for that. Another reviewer cut it off because it was too tight to tension the hammock. Check the sag with the net closed before you rely on it.
Which of these listings is light enough to carry?
AnorTrek at 590 g and COVACURE at 560 g are the lightest with straps. Glymnis, Ovyuzhen, Travel Bird and the Cycayit rows are still around the 1 kg side of a nylon bed. ANYOO at 1.68 kg is a garden hammock. Light does not mean ready for a night. You still add the tarp and the under-layer.
Where are you allowed to hang overnight?
Where you have permission. The Countryside Code and the Forest Code tell you to protect trees. They are not a permit to camp. Use a site that allows hammocks, or ask the landowner. If there are no trees, a tent is the honest choice, which is what one reviewer of the net hammock already does.
What load margin should you leave?
Stay under the lower figure when the listing prints two. AnorTrek’s bullet says 230 kg and the field says 500 lb. A strap can be rated lower than the cloth, as on DD’s own 125 kg daisy chains, which are not in these boxes. This comparison did not test a seam, so the printed number is not a certificate.
